F1 Tunnel Hull build (Kris Flynn Plans)

I've been wanting to build a tunnel hull for ages and after a relatively successful attempt at building a 32" wild thing mono (it floats, even when upside down!) I realsied that I may be addicted to cutting wood and glueing my fingers together.

I've now got a set of plans for a 28" F1 Tunnel Hull (many thanks Kris) and have made a start on building the hull, but now I need to start looking at motor and hardware selection etc. I have a few sets of 3S 5000mAh LiPos available and would like to use them in this hull, ideally in a 3S2P configuration for longer run times. I'm guessing that since they powered the (rather heavy) Wild Thing along at a reasonable rate of knots that they should be fine for this build too. I'm looking for some (ok, a lot) guidance on what lower outboard units are available/recommended and what motor size/kV rating and prop size I should be looking for. I've read about OS and K&B lower units but have no idea what else may be out there and what would be best suited.

I should add that this is buing built purely for fun with no intention on going racing, so no requirement to meet any racing rules etc. The idea is to have something to run alongside the Wild Thing I built for my son..... so, as long as it's just a wee bit quicker all will be good!

I'm sure I will have many more questions along the way.

Thanks in advance for your help.

    Gary

      Hey Gary,

Starting to look good! I and getting a lasercut version of this in a few weeks to put together, I LOVE this design, it runs great on a 'P' Spec setup. But I am sure it will also run well on your 3S2P setup also.

      Cheers

Are the plans for this available? Looking for a good upgrade to a Dumas Hot Shot sprint.
        Thanks

          Thanks Kris.

I have to confess that I'm not following the centre section 100% to your design but making some of it up as I go along. Part of the fun of scratch building I guess!

I have also to plead ignorance to not knowing what a 'P' Spec setup is, and hence the request for a suitable motor spec to use running on 3S. Should I be looking for a motor with a kV that will spin it to around 30,000rpm on 3S (around 2700) for this type of hull, or am I way off?

I've done a little more research into the outboard lower assemblies available and the consensus seems to be to use the O.S. unit - quite pricey and rarer than hens teeth from what I can see. The other unit I quite liked the look of was the Hyper Performance 3.5 Angle Drive but can't find much info on whether it's any good or not.

One last thing for now. I was planning on filling the sponsons and side sections of the centre tub with blue insulation foam cut to shape, after sealing with thinned epoxy. Is this what's normally done, or should I just leave the voids empty?

I told you there would be lots of questions!

          Cheers,
          Gary

            siberianhusky,

Kris very kindly emailed me a copy of his plans after I contacted him. I'm sure if you asked nicely he would oblige. Or to save his time, if he has no objections I could forward on the files he sent me.

That would be great, I have enough material to build a complete hull downstairs, I always have at least one scratch build going, better than TV in the evening!
              Thanks in advance!

                Hey Gary,

You never know it may go better when you mod something :) it is always better to adjust things as you go to suit your needs anyway.

You can pass on those drawings, The more boats the better!

I normally leave the voids in the sponsons empty, but if it will make you feel better then filling them with the blue foam will be OK.

For sport setups I would run around 30,000 RPM, o between 2500 to 3000 KV should be fine. I would also look at making it as light as possible with only 3S.

P Spec is the motor and controller out of say the Aquacraft UL1 or SV27

                Cheers
                Kris

I can't believe it's been almost a year since I was last here. And I certainly haven't made a whole lot of progress

But here are a few pictures of what I have achieved. The canopy is very much still work in progress but slowly taking shape. That foam goes everywhere when you sand it!

                    Hey Kris

Hope you well! Do you perhaps have these plans available?

                    Regards,
                    Ryan

                        Hey Guys,
I have been working on a F1 tunnel design referencing the ML boatworks PX335, Cozy F1 and the Dragon. The model is at 33.5" which I plan to scale to fit to any O/B unit size and will be for FE. I now have the tunnel section built in Solidworks and have started the sponsons which is where I have some questions. I don't have a O/B unit dimensions to reference from to set my sponson depth to the tunnel and outdrive. I would like to use an OS unit or the K&B or whatever else may be out there. I do have he O/B drawing that is with the Dragon DXF but it is to small for the 33.5 although I can scale it but need proper dims. If I understand correctly this Hull (33.5") will use a 7.5 OB unit.
Any help, tips and advice will be greatly appreciated.
                        Thanks,
                        Brian
