SAILR's WHIP 20 FE BUILD & MY PROTOTYPE WHIP 20 COWLING PLUG

Well, I have been building a custom Whip 20 for Sailr (Jim) here on OSE, and I figured I should share some pics with everyone. The boat is now completely framed, and the bottom sheeting has been added. I am awaiting his hardware/ electronics before I continue. In the mean time, I have decided to start the prototype plug that I mentioned when building Hebner's Whip 20. I actually got the plug built this evening, and just put the first coat of epoxy on. Once its dry, it will be scraped, and another coat added till I get the final look I need to make a mold, and make epoxy Whip 20 FE cowlings from there on! It looks so awesome in person, and the pics really do not do it justice. This should finally be the alternative to the Vacupickle and Blazer cowl. Enjoy! Mike

                    Mike,
Put me on the list for one of the cowls your making. Ran the whip yesterday for the first time at our club meet, UL1 motor and esc should be very competitive when I get set up right. Best handling hydro I've run.

I just added the third coat of epoxy to the cowling plug and it is really smoothing out now! Its going to have the nice sharp edges at the top and a smooth fillet all around the base, and the rear will have a smooth transition off the deck. I am freakin excited! I will do probably one more epoxy coat and that will be sanded with 1000 grit to get out any trash, then I will prep the plug for the mold after that. The final cowl itself will be 2 layers of 6oz cloth and MAS epoxy resin as a final product. The good thing about it being epoxy is you can see threw it enough to trim it perfectly to your hull, and the fact it will weigh about nothing, and will not warp in the direct sunlight! I do not know a price just yet. I have purchased several similar tunnel hull cowlings and they were all about the same price shipped so it will probably be in that range. Let's get the mold made first tho, TTH u are on the list, second in line, Mike

Shoot, yeah, you kinda did claim first dibs on the privious build thread for Hugh..Let me start a list here and people can tag their name after the one above them:

                              1) Ray
                              2) Hugh
                              3) TTH

3rd coat of epoxy applied. Just need to smooth a few small areas, and it will be ready to become a plug!
