Trying out some wings on my SS45

This season I decided to go with some different Lipo's. I am now running 6s4200mah Hyperion G3 35c cells for 6s8400mah. The boat is much faster than it was last season with the new cells. The problem I ran into this season is the boat becomes pretty light in the mid 60's so instead of adding weight I decided to get a hold of Jevmax and see what he did on his SS45 to keep it down at the SAW events. After Looking at his SAW boat I decided that I would experiment with some extra wings attached to the canards. I made them so they can be removed and replaced with some short ones and some with more or less angle. Once I get a set that works perfect I plan to make them permanent by attaching them with nuts and bolts. Let me know what you guys think....good or bad, I am going to try them either way

Another club member with an SS45 did the same thing, and he runs mid-high 60s on smooth water. The tabs are absolutely necerssary, afterall the SS45 was designed for just 50 mph.

Yeah I was hoping that the tunnel mod that Phil does on all the SS45's now would help the hull hold the water better. I guess the mod did work but only up to about 60 or so before the boat starts to get nasty.

Well the wings seemed to do their job today but my ESC decided it was time to stop working on me

Just part of the hobby I guess. Maybe I will pay the upgrade price for the HV240 this time around.

Boat sure looked good until the failure. My tunnel will lift the nose with a fresh pack almost any way I trim it. I'm experimenting with some stick-on UL-1 wings I had laying around [ please don't laugh !] If they work I'll likely do something a little more subtle.

Yeah the hull was running better with the wings for sure. This will give me a chance to change the setup for next season anyway. Bigger ESC, milder motor, bigger prop...who knows mabe even faster?

Wow that hull runs wicked, like the tabs, very nice But then it seems all your builds I've seen are awesome and your boats run likewise.

Thanks for the words, up until this point I thought my hull setups were pretty much bullet proof. They are run pretty fast, stable and cool. I honestly don't think this setup was pulling over 180 amps but there was something the ESC didn't like I guess. I ran this setup all last season and this season as well. Might be time for a HV240?

I think the tabs are a step in the right direction.. I just raced agaist Jim's (jvmax) ss45 last weekend,, his boat is running fast and has no issues staying on the water... We had good water for the races and our boats were in the 60's every heat..

I dont think the amp rating is the issue,, just the processor board...
Nothing like keeping you lipos warm and your prop wet!!

                            Hey Raydee...

If you decide on running the HV240 and that 1527 1y, Id really like to know how it works out for ya.

Sorry about that 400.00 esc.. crap happens huh.

I realize you guys (or most of you at least) don't have much aeronautical experience... But the thing is with these 'wings" of yours, you have to make sure that you aren't giving them too much angle. Otherwise, they'll stall. Then your not getting as much downforce, simply a lot of drag.

Make sure your trailing edges are sharp and start with small angles (~10*) and slowly increase until you find a sweet spot.

A large wing with a proper airfoil and a very slight angle is going to have much less drag than those smal stubby things with large angles.
