Some people think it's time to progress beyond dirty 100 year old technology of burning fossil fuels ...but others appear happy to stick their heads in the sand to avoid anything resembling change...

This guy keeps popping up. His only "credential" is he was a chaplain during the construction of the TAPS (Trans Alaska Pipeline System). Apparently he has convinced people that this gave him access to "inside" information about the total reserves on the north slope, etc.
This statement is so absurd on the face of it that it is essentially impossible to counter. I am a geologist and worked for BP, who owns Prudhoe Bay. I actually did some work on the reserves up there. Seems this guy knows more than we did working the fields.
His claim is like saying he worked in a car wash and therefore knows the ins and outs of the engineering decisions that went into a certain vehicle.
But he keeps popping up, because he is on the Internet, and that makes it all true.
Just think about this. Prudhoe Bay is the single largest US oil field. It has proven reserves of 13 billion barrels of oil (bbo). Saudi Arabia has proven reserves of 267 bbo. SO for this claim to be true there would have to be around 21 more Prudhoe Bay fields on the north slope. And folks, if there are, then they are hiding really well.Don't get me startedComment

So what should we move to? Don't even start with Ethanol. That is a complete waste. Hydrogen is not cost effective either.Comment

We are using petroleum resources faster than they are, or can, be replaced. These resources are absolutely critical as raw materials for almost everything that we use. This makes burning them to drive to the store or to turn on your TV completely idiotic.
We have coal to last thousands of lifetimes. And we have the technology to actually burn it without killing ourselves. But we lack the will as a people to force companies to install the equipment to allow for the use of clean safely. And that is really sad.Don't get me startedComment

Develop solar... for most people it at least sounds cleaner then anything else and it is abundant, it would justify the pouring of millions to develop and getting someone really rich.

I hate to think that I agree with Bill on a political issue......
The largest oil fields in the world are certainly not in Alaska - I worked there for 27 years as a geologist and engineer. Williams is just trying to sell books and lecture dates for himself.
A "minister" he is? Remember Jim and Tammy Fae Bakker? Hundreds of boy-friendly Catholic priests? Being a 'minister' hardly automatically qualifies anyone to be either an expert on a subject - or even to be an honest person.
Find a viable petroleum replacement for air transportation or the chemicals/plastics we use day to day. Heck, just find one for automobiles. Ain't one now, won't be one for decades. Get over it.
