Racism makes me sick. I love RC Boats but have experienced way to much ignorance in our little universe. Politics aside. A boy is Dead. Shot by an untrained Neighborhood watch guard. It's a shame that in 2012 we still deal with street violence and racism of the worst kind. Next time you are at a boat race and see participant of African descent pay attention to how they are treated. In my experience they are treated poorly. Sad...I love this hobby but it is getting more difficult to just have fun without encountering hate and ignorance.

Howard, I knew you were great with boats, but I didn't know you were great enough of a person to stand up and post something like this.
Right on man. Life is too short for racism, and very beautiful without it. I was appalled reading some of the not so intelligent posts on this thread, but reading what you and Darin came back with actually enlightened me and set my day off on a great foot.
By the amount of racially negative posts on this thread I was beginning to think this was the opinion of most of the boating community, but now I see that some of the more Advanced racers are also socially empowered.

Interesting conversations / debate here gentlemen....obviously stirring a bit of emotion in many of us. At the end of the day we ALL have the power to choose how WE want to view, treat and respect others.
I've found it is not always good to judge a book by it's cover. Not trying to simplfy this. But, treating others as you would have others treat you could go a long way in this melting pot of life. I'll even make a bold comment....what if we were just kind and considerate to each other regardless of all the other baggage?
Regarding the shooting -This 17 year old loosing his life was a Tragedy for all involved. Don't know that we'll EVER know the truth on this. In my humble opinion- this will happen again unless the laws are changed so that a person is not able to shoot another person simply because they felt "threatened" by the way someone looked at them.

My condolences truly go out to anyone who has dillusions of a racial "revolution" in our society's future.
The only "revolution" going on in this country has been slowly in the works for years now and this Treyvon incident is part of it which is the movement to End racism.

That movement has been quite successful.
First I was offended by the reference to "picking cotton" but now I've let those words fuel my day.

Reading the words "pick cotton" has empowered me. Its a reminder of just how far society has progressed, and the HUGE obstacles my ancestors overcame to build the empire my family has built despite.
Now the only cotton my family picks is a GUCCI sweater, or the soft top on a luxury car

I understand exactly what Darin was talking about here. Either someone is exploiting a tragedy or it was bad timing. However, in posting this, it has shown that there are still some major social issues still present and occurring in modern day society.

1.) Hatred and Racism are still alive and well in this country. We seem to be obsessed with it. The OP had noting to do with race but we took it there.
2.) The media has become too great a driving force in this country. It tells us how to think. Who to like and who to dislike or in some cases, who to hate.
3.) Blacks generally don't trust the police. Often for good reason.
4.) The government identifies us by our racial heritage. So we tend to think that is ok. It would be better if we focused on the character of each individual.
5.) We've become obsessed with hate. How about turning that around?
6.) We've become too sensitive and confused by political correctness. Christmas is still Christmas. Dumb is still Dumb.
7.) We should shun the corrupt and moraless. Not glorify and embrace them.

Dom, one of the biggest problems with our society is generalizations.
I was never raised to distrust police. Hey, I wasn't taught to embrace them, but one true saying I was taught is: Police may give folks a hardship sometimes, but this place would be horrible without them.

Society is gonna work through these issues regardless.

Sure racism is still alive in this country, but in my lifetime I've seen an incredible amount of progress, and I focus on that instead of dwelling on nonsense.
We have a black president for cryin' out loud! Society has become so much more diverse.

I'm out. I don't need to put my face up to the screen of this. My success stems from avoiding negative things altogether.
Now I'm gonna' hop in my convertible and cruise up the coast with the golden california sun shining on me to enjoy breakfast overlooking the ocean in the cotton I picked out of my closet.

It happens to be a hoodie ; )

I'm wearing my hoodie today, in memory of Treyvon. I remember being his age going to visit my little girlfriend in a nice neighborhood, and the stuff i went through. Very sad incident and anyone who exploits the situation for a few laughs or to impress folks on a toy boat forum is simple minded.

This is one of the things I was referring to. The media doesn't just report the news, it makes the news. It may sound boring, but probably fully welcomed, a news outlet that just reports the news. Then at the end of a news broadcast, two pinheads go at it in a point/counterpoint session?

I don't think people realize that we are of one race. Our skin color is merely a result of adaptation to our environment.
To me that just says that we are a resilient and adaptable species.

I literally can't believe you posted this. There is no way I could ever have conveyed this myself.
You are right, folks have treated me like a dog out there at times, and unfortunately its a couple of race officials doing it as well.

Man, you may or may not think highly of me, but you stand as probably the tallest model boater, and possibly one of the tallest upstanding people I know.
That was a heck of a thing to post man..

Our club here at home is great, the Model Mariners. Our club is racially diversified. we have officials of every color.

My local pond here in San Francisco is very diverse as well. Race plays NO role over there, I mean the fastest guy there is black -Me : )

I've gained the respect of the sailboat guys (nearly impossible) They like me so much, they allow me to run during their races! I'm the only power boater allowed to run on their side of the lake because of the special circumstances I need being a pro.
My joke with 'em is "Hey, it just makes it look like a real race, there's powerboats zooming by during real sailboat races lol!"

On a positive note, I appreciate the many boaters and officials who have never made me feel that way, or descriminated in any way and Especially my sponsors who have put my pretty face on grocery store shelves nation wide : )
