As the topic says, why all the disdain for self righting boats the last few months?
Self Righting Hull, why all the hate talk about them lately?

Self Righting Hull, why all the hate talk about them lately?

Racing I can understand as they have an unfare advantage, but for the average sport boater they are fantastic.

How are they an unfair advantage? its not like a Neu/Lehner/Plett, 300A ESC or full ceramic bearing which many cant afford but buy an advantage, anyone can make their mono self-right for a few hours of time and under $10 of materials. or so you mean unfair against the cats in offshore because they cant be made to self-right? If so cats already have the advantage of better handling and it just evens things up in my opinion.Paul Upton-Taylor, Greased Weasel Racing.Comment

(Capsizing is an act of tipping over a boat or ship to disable it. The act of reversing a capsized vessel is called righting.
If a capsized vessel has sufficient flotation to prevent sinking, it may recover on its own if the stability is such that it is not stable inverted. Vessels of this design are called self-righting.)
So even Nay-Sayers are doing self –righting boats for years by placing battery and motor as lower is possible.Comment

Sorry I missed it the first time around. So there are now rules against self righting boats?Steven Vaccaro

The unfair advantage is that in order to win or to be in the next heat you must finish the race and an upside down regular boat has no chance to recover and complete the race.....just my opinion.

I am not aware of any rule in NAMBA that specifically prohibits self-righting hulls, but I am concerned with their impact on the other racers. I don't really care about any perceived "unfair advantage", but these hulls can and do cause problems in a racing heat. When a boat flips the CD calls it "dead" and the remaining drivers have to keep track of the dead boat's position. They may take a certain turn wide on every lap to prevent hitting a dead boat (which is an automatic DQ) and this increases their lap times. But if the "dead" boat comes back to life the other racers may not be aware of it, and this confuses the other drivers with sometimes unfortunate results. They have enough to worry about without this extra distraction - what if a driver hits a "dead" boat and is DQ'd, but then the "dead" boat resumes racing? Lots of gray areas here to be addressed. Solution - see the last sentence below.
What many CDs are doing is calling any boat which flips "dead". If it is not running again in five or ten seconds it cannot resume racing. This is not supported by the "rules" but is within the CD's domain to control. Personally I believe that flood chambers should be disabled (simple to do with tape) during any sanctioned racing.

Steven apparently racers not only don't vote on the rules, they don't even know what they are. Unfortunately this included the CD of the race that brought this to light, which happened to be the Nat. FE Director from what I understand.
This past election is a GREAT example. Out of the entire IMPBA membership, only 104 votes were cast for the National Fast Electric Director position. HELLO PEOPLE!!!
It will be a great day when racers let their voices be heard some place other than bitching on some forum. The IMPBA has their own forum that sees very little activity. PATHETIC!!
On this Thanksgiving, among much more important things, I am thankful for those who choose to give of themselves and their time (on their own dime) to make this hobby and organized racing better for everyone including those that just complain.
Many thanks to the IMPBA BOD!!! You guys rock!!

I sad to see same people will see innovation as an unfair advantage.
These are not sale models and are impossible to compare to full size boat.
No crew will survive speed acceleration and g-force in real boat with power ratio to weigh,
we have in today fast electric boats.
And I hope any hobby organization will be encouraging members innovation .Comment

It has to do with racing. You stuff the boat and it ends up upside down your done.
If you just wanna sport boat then have at it.Current IMPBA P-O/B Tunnel SAW record holder with avg time of 3.358 seconds @ 67.004 MPH.
Owner Worlds fastest record setting Lynx with average time of 3.287 seconds @ 68.451 MPH.

Listen Smock...get your head out of your Turkey.
If the selfrighting boats are allowed or dis-allowed, I could care less.
My beef (sorry, today it should be "fowl" for you folks increasing your body mass index today in the US) is that if the friggin rules have been changed, then place them for all to see on the IMPBA's home page where there is a clear link to the "rules". Seems awfully logical doesn't it?
That is where members and potential members would expect to find out the information on what they can and can't do.
They shouldn't be expected to hunt for them...a great way to discourage people.
I understand that people who run the organizations are doing it on their own time, but come on, its been 2 years since they have apparently been "approved" and "changed".
By the way, I did vote.
Now, go back to you bird.Don't want it to get cold. Go Lions!
