Our band has a facebook page, it's kinda useful for announcing shows, posting pictures of shows etc. I really have no other use for it. I know a ton of musicians who use the marketing benefits of facebook but nothing else.
One concert post reaches over 500 people who have joined our page. What everybody else uses it for is beyond me!If my boats upside down then who owns the one I thought I was driving the last two laps?Comment

I find it handy for sharing holiday pictures with friends - without subjecting them to a slide night! And as Egneg wrote, it's great for friends and relatives that live far away.
As far as privacy goes, just choose the right settings, and you can even limit what your Facebook friends see. It's certainly not all public.
I'm thinking about setting a Facebook page for our FE club. Easy way to share club photos and announce the next race meeting etc. Simpler to update than a regular web page (it must be, I can do it!).Comment

In mid 1990's there was a great prgram called ICQ.
A precursor to LiveMessenger, or whatever clone you use.
It had obver 20 millions clients who used instant chat, files transfer, voice and then video.
And then AOL bought the rights, and charged like wounded bulls for it's use.
It died quickly with other free messenger applets gaining their clients.
I see FaceBook is soon to become a listed company.. share holders expect profits. paid access is another way 'free speech' falters .

I think I know the connotation to your reference but FaceBook did seek and was granted an IPO by the SEC earlier this year. They had been scheduled to go public, either this month or next, but the BOD decided to put aside that plan as their market reseach proved that their initial offering price would not be recieved well due to the current economy. I dont know if anyone truely knows what the share value would have started out at but I have no doubt they were expecting a higher then normal ($15 to $50 per share) opening price. But I still think they would have made shareholders money as those who typically get in on the ground floor at the bigining tand to have the greatest return. I would have invested myself, and probably will once they go IPO unless the share price is like $100 or more. I'm not going to invest 10k. 1k maybe.

SEC in AU is State Electoral Commission .. !
My ex claimed I wasted $$$ on AppleComputer shares.. .. 1000 of first public listing.... a geek show for technerds like me
Maybe thats why she's gone ? .. I dont tolerate fools who dont evolve.
Facebook will eclipse whatever it faces .... it's constituent organics are symbiotic with the service. .. each needs the other to survive.
