Bob Barker urges SeaWorld to release sea animals

Longtime animal rights activitst Bob Barker has fired off a letter to the owners of SeaWorld, urging them to release their sea animals to sanctuaries that can provide a more natural environment.

I agree, but I'd take it a step further and place the CEO, the President and Trainers in a cage so we can go and watch them do tricks, (one caveat though, the cage would have to be 4 by 6ft or a close ratio to the equivalent of what the whales are living in, in comparison to the ocean)...What I want to say I really can't. But why is it people love to subject other people and animals to servitude for their own person enjoyment and financial gain. i have never been to a Zoo and would never go to one...One day humanity will understand the meaning of being complicit.

You need to find out what zoos really do. Check out the research they do. Check out the genetics they have learned there (initially, by accident).

Actually, supporting a zoo is a very "green" thing. Zoos are one of the leading places for animal-friendly employment as well as cultivating an appreciation for God's creation in young people.

Being you're from Florida, I can understand your opinion somewhat. Busch Gardens, Disney, and Sea World are not zoos. Try Philadelphia Zoo, Bronx Zoo, San Diego Zoo, etc. instead. They might make some money from the people who come in, but a good chunk is spent on research. Not only on how to better treat their own animals, but also how to understand their wild cousins.

If it weren't for zoos, I suspect a lot more animals would be extinct. Zoos tried to breed passenger pigeons to keep them around. Too late, unfortunately, but they tried.

Look what the Chinese have done with zoos. I'm no friend of China, but they're worked hard to learn about giant pandas in their zoos.

Actually, I told a boo boo, I remember while living in Yonkers, NY. I did payed a visit to the Bronx Zoo (White Castle made me remember that) I was very young though over 30 years ago...But i've never been back. Nevertheless, I'm in agreement with most of your point, But still, most of these animals (unless their on the endangered species list for conservation and REINTRODUCTION) are under enormous stress, being confined in such small acreage.

I assure you the animals in Seattles Zoo are not all all confined to small cages.

Still not as vast as their natural habitat, Especially large mammals( Bears, Elephants, Dolphins, Killer Whales,Big Cats, etc) While all are still confined The Killer Whales and Dolphins are extremely restricted due the the vastness of the ocean.

I agree that it is a shame for these animals to be kept in the small confines, but animals like the killer whale in orlando, has been captivity for so long that if it were released it would not know how to survive.

But the Killer Whales are purposely bred for captivity, it's a perpetual cycle.

                Sort of on topic here.
I did not go to the Zoo here for a long time as I remembered the bears pacing in a small enclosure and the polar bears banging thier heads on the wall and a few other not too cool memories.

Well all that changed (for me ) about 10 years ago and I wnt back to the Zoo and saw how the animals live now. No it is not the wild openness of nature but it is dang close.
I agree that the Zoo's make a great contribution to conservation and especially with the endangered species by keeping the gene pool clean by moving animals and sperm etc around the world.

One side of me says; Yes all animals should be free to roam as they see fit.
Then we have farms for beef, poultry, pigs etc
We have domesiticated cats and dogs with fenced properties.

This could be a long discussion, with no real winner.

Well, it sounds like you're about due for a visit to a real zoo.

How about one with no fences? May I suggest Bear Country in South Dakota? When you drive in, they tell you to keep your windows closed and stay in your vehicle. http://www.bearcountryusa.com/ My wife took the kids there a few years ago and they loved it. There was a woman in front of them who got out of her car to do some sort of new age dancing and meditating thing. They stuck around to see what the bears would have for lunch. Apparently they didn't want anything too stupid.

Everybody seems to be missing the big point: Why should we listen to what Bob Barker says, and give his opinion any more credit than what some "Joe" off the street thinks? He's a Game Show Host. What makes him an expert at anything relating to animals and how they are housed/treated/trained?

I could care less what Bob Barker thinks. I care more about what the experts in the field think.

Experts!...lol, some experts have them in cages and the rest condone it.
