Tough day, had to put down and ol friend

Had to put down my ol girl German Shepard Dakota, I had her with me for 13 years. We got her from the pound when she was somewhere between 18 months and 2 years old. She had been having a tough time catching her breath the last few days so off to the vet. The vet said she had become anemic and could not determine the cause, so off to the Big City (Port Angeles, WA) to a vet who could take x-rays and do blood work. The poor ol girl had come done with lung cancer and had eaten up half of her lung capacity so I had on choice but to help her go. She will be missed.

Dakota is Ali's pillow and playing tug of war with Kiowa our golden retriever.

Poor Kiowa has been laying by the door the dogs go in and out of all day waiting for Dakota. She aint coming home though. By ol girl

      Brian,
That is so sad. My condolences.
Those of us that have lost a dog have some idea of how you feel. They truly become part of your family.

Sorry to hear it. That's one of the tough parts of having pets. Not only to keep them healthy but to be able to admit when it's time to help them move on.

It's one of the few times I've been turned into a bawling mess. Had to do the same thing with a 4.5 year old bengal cat a couple years ago, stomach cancer. Absolutely tore me up.

Yep not fun but Ive always had dogs and have had to help a few move on over the years. Dakota was to be put down the day after we adopted her from the pound. I guess we gave her 13 more years.

Sorry for your loss. We have 2 dogs here, an American Mastiff, and a Black Lab mix. They are like members of the family, and I dread the day....

My condolences, and kudos to you for making the right, and unselfish decision!

It is a rough time for you all. We as humans get over it a lot quicker than the friends or housemates (other pets)

I was not there when the last two cats that were important to me were sent off. I am not keen on seeing that at all.

You have a beautiful retriever there and I hope that you all will remember the happy times together.

                    Go well.

Sorry about your loss. Like said above, those who have dogs or have gone through this ordeal know how hard it is. Just remember all the good times and the great life she had while part of your family.

I had to do it to a G. shepherd as well and she looked just like yours!. She was with us for 13 years. Then had to do it again to my shepherd/dobie mix. She was also with me for around 13 years.

Hardest thing I have ever done. I cried for days on both.

Now my kids want another dog and I just do not want to get one virtually because of the pain...selfish? Maybe..... but I also travel alot so my cat is about all I can do....the little bitch she is :)

Hang in there...keep those pictures and pull them out when you want and ...well...cry a little and smile a little. I think our pets come back to us when we go to heaven.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I was there with my now wife for 2 of her dogs. Hardest thing ever, and I don't want to go through it for a third time.

I think the reward out weights the loss.

I also think its actually good for kids to go through the cycle of life. It is a hard lesson.
