Well I got mine in the water this weekend and the conditions were perfect for hydros....just a little ripple on the otherwise smooth water.

I did 3 runs with 3 sets of packs....all runs were with the same set up.

Stock motor & ESC (basically bone stock setup except upgraded flex shaft and thrust bearing added)

Grim Racer 40X57/3 prop @ 1" strut depth

MaxAmp 5250 30c 2s packs

Stock turn fin.

Ambient temp was low-mid 80's. Boat temps were a little up but not bad until the last run when I almost doubled the run to a 1.8 mile total before coming in.

Motor 125 degrees
Motor connectors 110 degrees
ESC 112 degrees (forgot to check cap)
Batteries 140 degrees
Deans Connectors 178 degrees

This is the warmest I've gotten the components, and I'm not comfortable with these temps. I will be replacing the Deans connectors with 5.5mm bullet connectors, but after seeing how cool the motor connectors are...I'm leaving those alone. I'm not too happy about battery temps. Maybe the 40X57/3 prop is too much for a longer run in the summer setting. I may remove it until things cool down this fall and play with some less aggressive props. I did hit 50mph again, with all the runs in the 49-50mph range.

Repairs held up nicely but I had about an ounce of water in the hull. I think it's leaking around the stuffing tube again.

I had very noticeable turning problems on my first run so I brought her in to check the rudder. I almost lost my turn fin, it was flopping around because the nylon breakaway bolt fell off and the 440 bolt was half way off....this is about the 3rd one of these nylon bolts I've lost on the fin or rudder. Although I locktite them with the Blue stuff...they seem to find a way to come loose. I will go back to the nylon zip ties.

I thinking about cutting the front open and repairing the leading edge next.

For the Nylon fasteners and loctite... I don't think loctite will work on plastic, only on metallics...

Try using a very small dab of silicone or Shoe Goo on the nylon stuff to keep it from backing off.

Also it's never a bad idea to upgrade to a larger diameter silicone tubing for cooling. I did it on my UL-1 and I don't have any issues with heat and I run 10 minutes at a time.

My allen screws in rudder came loose and I lost one. Be sure to tighten those well and use Blue Loctite.

BTW your temps look OK to me. Those temps you are seeing now will rise higher in the Hot summer months.

Im a new ul-1 user running stock ESP and Grimracer 40-57/3 prop with 7.4 3600 20C batt's

Can I use other larger capacity battries - say 4900mah 25C or higher - will this increase speed?

will the ESC take the extra current?

Yes!
I use 5200mah 30c packs and they work great..
these boats like lots of amps from the packs

Most definitely YES! Go with the bigger amps and C rating. Your boat will be faster and the batteries will run cooler because they don't have to work as hard.

Steve at OSE sells them.

Product ID: ose-cable-ul1
OSE Upgraded AquaCraft UL-1 Cable
In Stock: 0 Details

OSE Flex Cable Assembly for the AquaCraft UL-1. Upgraded .150" Cable with 3/16" prop shaft. This is cut and ready to install in your boat. This upgraded cable is a higher quality with thicker wire strands and better aligned to the prop shaft then the stock unit. The prop shaft is only 2 1/4" long which reduces resistance and allows more strut adjustment. Which will help vibrations which will help reduce strut bearing wear. Just install it and go!

No soldering or cutting required!

This can also be used in any other boat requiring a .150 cable that measures 13 11/16" from tip to tip.

Price: $24.99

Unfortunately they are currently out of stock.

hey all

Took my Ul-1 out today it ripped - except I have cracked the area around the turn fin can wedge apart - can I repair this with some Arildite or simular? Or does this need re-glassing - the bolt holes are still ok not striped......

Looks like this model was a late one re-inforced in this area - I ran up a imbankment

thanks in advance

Sooo, you ran the boat ashore and cracked it around the turn fin?

bedrock
08-10-2009, 12:22 AM
Yep

Got some glass today and will cover the fin area then put another Alluminum bracket covering the whole area then screw original one to this.

This boat was purchased only 2 weeks ago think it would be the later batch that has been made stronger......

Capt - 50mph is commendable with that set-up!! The most I've ever gotten was 44mph (100% stock with an X440/3), but the water was a little rough. I might pick-up a grim 40x57 prop this week. Last time I checked one out, the shape seemed different than my 440/3. They are darn close in diam and pitch though...

Capt - Was your 40x57 sharpened? I ran one the other day out of the box (was very well balanced, believe it or not) and all it did was cavitate. I tried full up to full down strut position, hand launching, etc... and she just wasn't hooking up.

LuckyDuc
09-11-2009, 12:47 PM
You need to thin and sharpen it. This will help with cavitation.

Capt. Crash
09-11-2009, 02:19 PM
Mine isn't thinned....but it is balanced and sharpened. It does take awhile 50 ft or so to hook up.

I just got a pair of Maxamps 2s 60C 6500s and they blow the doors off my 2s 5250 packs, I am a believer in Maxamps and their quality and warranty. I'll have to GPS to see what she'll do w/ the 40x52/3 amd 40x57/3 props.

Capt. Crash
09-17-2009, 03:23 PM
So they've doubled the "C" rating on the 5250s too? How they do that?

Ahhhh...I just looked at the spec sheet I downloaded when I bought my 5250s and the only change in it and the new spec sheet is the old one says:

30C Constant (157 amps) (no mention of surge watts/amps)

The new one says:

60C - 2330 surge watts (315 amps) (no mention of constant amps)

All other data is identical. That appears to be the same battery with the specs twisted to look better.

Of course the bigger 6500 pack would perform better...as would even bigger packs till the weight became an issue.

Brushless55
09-17-2009, 08:50 PM
Not sure how they get a 60c rating, what is the bust?
I think even a 6500 30c would rip..

Drag Boat Bob
09-18-2009, 12:38 PM
My 6500 2s (30c) are under 3 months old and when I purchased them they listed both constant and burst current (195/390). It is the same battery that now advertises 60c.

I recently purchased some 3s and I noticed that they only list the burst current rating now.

Must be a marketing thing...

I run an ammo 36-56-2600kv with a hydra 120, M645 and Turnigy 5000 40c.. flirting with 60mph. A full inch on the strut @ -o- . instant speed increase - runtimes are about 5 to 7 min. On the edge of control - better know when shes gonna come out of the water,(throttle) or you'll spend alot of time fishing your boat out of the lake...LOL

I ran it on mine a few times without issue, but you may be right. I looked at the package for the motor and it does say it max current 55amps but surge to 90 amps... so I probably was just lucky. The new ESC has a huge cap on it, It may also be rated for higher power. My buddy is going to run this with the new ESC we'll see what happens...

Rumdog

It'll pull more amps than that, depending on how it's propped.

I have a ul1 that is bone stock, with stock strut and rudder settings with a x442 prop.I know the esc is rated for 18v max but I had to try it on 6s.I took the turn fin off and taped up the holes.Ran it for about 1.5 minutes on glass smooth water. The gps read 61.9mph.It flew straight up and came down hard with no damage.Im not bragging-I know it wasnt smart to run it on 6s but I couldnt resist. And no I dont have a video of it.Ill try to next time.Last time the wife was recording runs you couldnt read the gps through the camera after I brought it to shore. The glare was awefull.Any tips as far as the gps and camera go?But if you wanna go fast for just a min.try 6s.It gets it.

Brushless55
05-27-2010, 06:10 PM
Try 5s, the speedo can take it.. I can get 60mph + on 5s :rockon2:
