hey guys i ned some help with rudders on a boat i just bought...it is a 28 inch cat hull and it currently has dual rudders on it...i'm just woundering do i need to run two rudders or can i upgrade to a nice single rudder...??i'm asking because the ones on the boat are only cheap plastic rudders and i would like to upgrade to a metal one with a pick up in it...or is there a way to hook two of the metal rudders together??..because really i will need two pick ups..

If your just farting around with the boat and are not too worried about handling then you can run this in-line drive system.

But if your looking to race the boat and need the handling I would suggest this setup.

As for dual pickups. Just tee off of the main incoming line to the equipment that requires the cooling. It will keep the boat looking cleaner.

If you can , shoot a couple of pics of the boat and post them here.
There are a few who will help and I'll do what I can.
Water cooling will rarely need two pickups. I have done a lot of research (reading) and trialed many different ideas as far as water cooling goes.

It can be a contentious topic as far as flow rates and volumes are concerned and there are some here who are qualified in the subject.
My feeling is that if you need that much cooling that you need more than 1 pickup then your setup is out of order. Two of my hulls run with no pickup, not no water cooling just no pickup.
Now there is a thought ??

I'll help where I can.

Seeing the pictures that you have provided so far, it seems that your boats rudders do not have pickups in them to begin with. Therefore no cooling from the rudder is required. Are you thinking of swapping out the electronics and putting more power to the boat, is that why you want pickups?

ya i know that the rudders dont have pickups in them..i want water kooling because i'm going to run twin 540l motors and 120 amp esc's..(i think)lol....i bought it as an empty hull i'm putting all my own electronics it it...

would you guys maby suggest changing the set up so the props come out the back instead of the botom??

and i would get you more pics but them boat hasn't got to me yet so i'm just taking pics that the guy i bought it from had..the boat should be here early next week

What's the boat made of? Do you have inside pics of the hull as well?

its an abs hull i doo believe..here is a couple of pics i can find:

http://i273.photobucket.com/albums/jj209/mitchell_mcdonald/DSC01921.jpg

the motor mounts and radio box that are in there will be coming out.....

i also just had another thought..do i need to run a dual prop/motor set up in a cat or could i just relocate the props and run just one prop out the back?..that seems like the easiest thing for me to do..i would just have to epoxy the holes on the bottom

would fiberglassing the inside of the hull be recomended?

Not 100% sure if the epoxy for fiberglass will damage the hull or not, so I would recommend trying out some FG epoxy on a small piece first. Running one prop through the center of the hull will work just fine. If you still want to run dual props and motors, for whatever reason, I would place them in the sponson as low as possible.

IMO: I would run both motors in there as the counter rotating props will abolish and prop walk. And as you can see in the pics bellow I'll be running my new DF Vortex hydro with one pickup and two tees so that I can cool all three items at once.

ok so if i were to cut out the prop holes in the bottom and epoxy them shut i would be able just to run 1 prop out the back with something like this: http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/proddetail.php?prod=tfl-502b15..or would i need something like this:http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/proddetail.php?prod=ros-monosys to run it out the back??.....and being a cat i don't think it should torque twist to much should it?...i'm likeing the idea of running one prop out the back because it loks beter and will save me money when buying electronics because i don't have to buy double

ok guys so i think i've decided that i'll just cut the dual props outa the bottom and fill those holes in...i will then run a single prop out the back of the boat probobly with this setup:http://www.offshoreelectrics.com/proddetail.php?prod=ros-monosys...does this seem like a good idea???...please answer guys..i want to know so i can start on this boat as soon as i get it

lol hey man I just tried the epoxy we were talking about a few days ago on the holes in my hull....well besides the fact that it's the worst thing I've ever smelled....

It seemed to fill in the little holes just fine. For the big holes I glued in a piece of scrap plastic and I'll let you know how it goes.

ok thanks chunky....i'll just cut some peices off the radio box when i pull it outa there in order to put over the holes on the inside to support it.....i think this is going to save me some money to by only haveing to buy one motor and esc not 2
