Iv ordered a PTSS21 from Fine Design.com, It sent out just two days ago and I so cant wait to start the build, Iv noticed Jimmys got his going already, so Iv got to catch up.

Iv got a couple of questions before I buy a few extra props...

I have decided to go ahead and use a Neu 1515 1.5y 1500, and a Hydra 120,

So what would be a good Prop for 4s2p? Ill use (2) 4950mah 33c Eon's.

Maybe an x450 on 4s2p?

Also with 5s2p will an x442 be ok to run???

Thanks guys.:bounce:

Just my advice, but I would think a X450 size prop may be too big for that hull. But you wouldn't know unless you try. Personally I would stick around X445,M445,M545,X640,X645. Somewhere around there I think would be adequate. But thats just me.

Nice choice in hulls! Why not go for the proven 1515/1Y? I raced against a SS21 last weekend that had this motor and ran a x640-x642 prop,, mid 50's in heat race trim.. One fast little boat! Stuck to the water really nice also,, handled the chop in race conditions very well for the length...

nate
05-07-2009, 10:18 PM
Thanks guys, well I did as you said tth, I went and bought an x445, an m445 and x438, that should give me a few to bounce around and see what works best,

I was hoping that this would be a good fast hull, I like any hull with great handling at 50. lol

Is there any good links to building one of these hulls? I see Jimmys started his setup, are there any more out there you guys know of...

One last thing, so your saying this boat on 4s will see 50mph?... I was thinking maybe 49-51mph on 5s...

tth
05-07-2009, 11:27 PM
Nate, assuming that you set up the boat properly with a smooth driveline and proper c.o.g, this hull on 5s should see low to mid 50's. On my hydro's I prefer smaller diameter props with more pitch.......thats only my personal preferance.

Ok Cool, well thats why I wanted to see the setup on one of the ptss21 running 50's..

Ok a few question's, Iv decided to run 5s2p on my hydra 120 and 1515 1.5y...

Should I go ahead and order the individual 5.5mm OSE Bullet connectors to connect the

Parr. Wires into the two deans...

Or Will it be ok to wire it up as I displayed in the following pictures??

No, your leads are way too long and yes to bullet connectors
Also a close up of the boat, as I am sure it will need pin hole filling

I would get a picture of the boat but it hasn't came in yet, should be here like wed. or Thursday this week..

The 1515/1.5Y is the wrong motor for 4S. Even with an x645 or x450 you will be lucky to see much over 45 mph. To get the same speeds as the 1515/1Y you'll need a prop like a P235 - a lot of prop for the 1515 and for that hull. You will do better on 5S, there an x642 or x645 should get you into the 50s with a prop that won't upset the hull.

Now that you have the boat in your hands, you know what Douggie was talking about....

Iv had alittle time tonight to get the drive shaft (brass tubing) installed,
It actually aligned well..and Has a good tight fit into the hull..

The tubing was cut at 17" and leaves me over 3" inside to work with...

Iv still got to fiberglass it in but im waiting on the Speedmaster strut, Plus I need
to get the bottom sanded out and get ready to fill in the "Pin holes"

Heres the progress...

Indeed you did. But there are plenty of newbies lurking on this site, and reading your posts they may get the idea that 4S was a good idea with that motor. I was trying to help others to avoid a costly mistake. IMO the SS21 would run better on 4S and the right motor but hey, it's your money.

And I have no Idea what pin holes are

Really? Then why did you post this...

Explain then... Tell me how to fill in them Pin holes???

And... Well Id hope that someone that would just read on down could kinnda figure out
what cells to run on this setup...

Im mean Its clearly stated..

I guess it is my money , and if 5s works just as good as 4s on 1515 1y then
I guess no one makes any mistakes...

Im sure you have built this hull before... You should know tho... :popcorn2:

I think Jay is just refering to a RACE setup,,, You would NOT be able to RACE this "5s" in any P-class that you would normally see this hull running in..

For PLAY or SPORT running,, I guess the cell count really does not matter,, just personal preference at that piont..:popcorn2:

Fluid,

If you are saying that I don't know what I'am talking about when

I said Im getting started on the sanding...well...

Go about it your own way because you need to do a light sand over the hull

and get a layer of primer on...Here's why... If you will look in one of my pictures

you can clearly tell a diffrence in the hull with a layer of primer and the boat as-is...

Without a layer of primer it is very hard to get all the pin holes, over hangs, and rough marks out...

The primer can guide you in every direction IMO.

If not, I would be blindly trying to get an even fill in...and thats hard not knowing were there all at.

That being said, I was planing on using Epoxy/Resin with a thick amount of Micro ballon's, Phil recommends Spackling Paste used for wall board...

Im worried about the polyurethane mix sealing to this...

You can get a tube of autobody spot putty just about anywhere that works great on this stuff. Cheap and easy to sand. Those are the pin holes! Using a sealer sander will not fill them but will make them more obviuos for filling. If you want a nice paint job on it then filling these will be key.

If you really want great finish then fog it with a black or good color then block sand it off to find any other lows or highs on the hull. Just a light sanding will show this after the color fog.

Looks good.

nate
05-16-2009, 12:00 PM
Thanks Jeff. Can you buy that Autobody spot putty at
Autozone or O'Reilly Auto Parts?

Rumdog
05-16-2009, 12:13 PM
yes you can get it at autozone. just bought some the other day to fill some Larger than "pin holes". Dries fast, sands easily.

nate

Thanks man, can you tell me a price.. whats the exact name for this stuff..

Rumdog
05-16-2009, 12:54 PM
it is 3m bondo glazing and spot putty. in a red 4.5 oz. tube. $3.89 at autozone.

nate

Ok thanks for the info, Ill be picking up some in a few.

nate
05-16-2009, 04:42 PM
I went and picked up a few things today,
I bought some DryDex Spackling from lowes,
an then went a got that Bondo filler putty from Autozone
Z was talking about.

Both work well, The spackling is usless in the fact when it dries
it washes off when your doing a wet sand..

but other than that it works well...

The Glass putty works better...

Goes on smoother than the drydex, and becomes a better hard filler over all.

I'am waiting for it to dry now, I had to go ahead and do just about the whole boat...lol..:icon_bs:

Its slowing working out though.

Im about to start laying down the CF Twill, but first I wanted to get a shot of
the inside one last time before It goes in.

This stuff is very annoying, twill will fall all to pieces if its not taped, or
glued were it needs to be cut..I used Medium CA glue and run a bead down
each sides, then were it need to be cut...

after that hang it up so it will dry...

Im also trying to figure out how this motor is gunna fit..the mounts are alittle to tall
an won't allow the cowl to sit flush on the hull..

I order the William's Racing mount and its not going to work because of the water jacket.. and Im deffinatly using water cooling for 5s...

Ill figure somthing out im sure..

Im already getting tired from all the sanding and primer ect. lol

Every boat I do it seem's that Im tired of working on it after the paints done..

Maybe cause of all the tedious little things to do in paint work..

Im still waiting on my new 28c Flightpower 5s packs, front mount for my motor, 2 props, SM Rudder and the base coats to finish the paint, after that it should be ready for testing...then a video!!

I have never used this paint before, I figured Id try it out, I could only afford 2 cans, and yeah it took both cans just to do the top layer of the sponsons.

Ill be using two other base pearls from House of Color if it will hurry its A$$ up and get here!

I taped up another area on the bottom of the hull to paint because I hate
to fiberglass the brass tubing in before there is paint under it, then it would just be
a pain to sand and paint under the flex and keep it taped as well.

Drive shaft is going in along with the Carbon fiber and strut as well today.

Ok so here's the slow process of getting the brass tubing or
your drive shaft aligned and ready to fiberglass in.

In my pic's you can tell I had to put a drastic bend in the Shaft around 1/4" down
the brass tubing, This Hull is actually hard to work with because of the limited
space that you have, not so much a tight fit in width..but more so in height.

You kinnda have to keep everything low to the Floor of the hull, if not your cowl will
not fit correctly. It also looks tacky without a nice flat seal.

The motor mounts that the William's racing brackets are setting in are Birch wood cut, too just barly set low enough for the cowl to set on the hull flush...

After I had everything up I wanted to clean the surface with a harder grit sand paper before laying the Epoxy ect.

Then make sure the edges of the brass tubing are cut even, I just use the Dremel tool.

Also take time to clean the inside of the tubing, I used a small rounded wire brush from
my dremel kit, works just fine. If you have a major bend as mine and want to make sure
its still going to be a smooth fit without drag on your setup, run the same size bit down the tubing and it should bore out just enough for your flex cable to have a smooth spin.

Then right before everything is glued in align your motor to make sure everything is in spec.

If it were me I would run some bullet type connectors, have melted a lot of solder joins off deans connectors on a couple of mild BL setups.

at the moment im using 6mm ones

my pet hate is Y harness of deans plugs though so might be a bit biased!

Deans are only good to about 60 amps I believe. you'll prob melt em pretty easily w that setup. I'd go with at least 5.5mm bullets.

what do you normaly use to seal this connection together (forward part of the strut to the stuffing tube)

I have this situation right now on my vegas....but my strut has a brass bullet on the end that "just" fits inside the tube but how would you secure that connection?

Jeff Wohlt

I use shrink wrap. And they have colors :)

If not then if it is not going to move you can simply put a little silicone or even CA around the joint just to keep the water out.

Are you running the brass in the nose or teflon? Looks like you came up a bit short. Most run the brass into the nose a good 1/4" or so or for that one maybe all the way thru and use the bushing in the brass stuffing tube. Looks like your teflon will have to go into the nose now.

Nate, I have been watching this thread with interest and you are learning some of the pitfalls that can happen on a first time build. This is not meant as a rebuke, it is the process of understanding where I made a mistake and on the next build I will not do that again.
If, you have not applied the clear yet make sure you test for compability with the paint you applied.
Did you test for CG prior to mounting the hardware and proposed battery locations?
PS, I would take Fluid's and Jeff's advice to the bank and
it is a very nice looking boat.

Nate, at this point all I can see you being able to do is run the teflon into the strut...unless you want to add more brass and it is not worth that.

The issue you may have is the strut bushing. Does your prop shaft fit the strut now without anything else in it? If so then run the teflon on into the nose but make sure the shaft in the strut does not rub or push on the teflon. Most of us ran this way some time again. I actually cut the brass off a good inch or so before the strut nose and it would make adjustment of the strut very easy with open teflon to the nose.

If you need a bushing for the strut...if it does not fit the stub now it can be made easily from 1/4" on down to 7/32 brass to fit the 3/16" prop shaft. Put a 5/16" ring on the outter edge so the bushing does not slide in to the strut.

If you need one I can make one for you as well.

Yell if you need help but you are close! Great build!

Thank you Douggie, What do you mean by bank? Help me out. Like more weight to
front and back of the hull...
Thanks for the advice, Im also going to use 10AWG wire and swap over
to CC bullet connector's. My local HS guy told me he figured the two deans
would be good for running no more than 5s, but Im swapping over
anyways. Im sure you guys know more than he does considering he's
not even into building anything, just sales.

Iv also asked Burgess at Burgess Body shop thats spraying the clear on for me, and
I mentioned HOK, its should be ok, but the over paint I usins im not sure,
Ill probably just have to try it.

As far as the CG and were the batterys are located, well theres not much more room to
center them up or move around, Iv done a few configuration's and placed everything in, an
threw it in the pool a couple of times, Iv got a set of Lipo mounts and straps coming in Douggie, so that should allow me to pull the batterys up a few inch's when everything is mounted, Iv not got the extra motor mount in yet to finish, So im waiting for it to come in as well.

As for the strut, Jeff. Yes, Iv bought thick 5/8 shrink wrap for the strut to drive.

(COLORED LOL)

Here's a few more pic's. I have the Rudder half way installed.

Oh and Douggie, did you see Jimmy's SS21, Look at were his battery and motor are placed,
there both similar.

Douggie,

Yeah I was planing on using the sheet of carbon fiber in the rear,

I put it in the water when all the bolts were mounted and it did leak through,

so Ill fiberglass in the rear after painting tonight, My paint finally came as well as my k-tape Iv

been needing.

But anyways, Douggie explain the Bank your were talking about.

Here's the color...
