Steven,,

I am going to build a 10s2p mono powered by a Neu 2230/1Y... I was wondering if you could make the same type of cooling jacket like you offer for the 2215, but to fit the 2230 series... I also have another club member who is going with the same set up and will need a cooling jacket as well.. So you can put me down for 2 off the start!:tiphat:

Hey Tx, today I met up with a machinist that will be cutting me a cooling jacket for my 2230! I am ordering 6061-T6 alum. pipe tonight for the project. I think i will order enough for 5 jackets for now. I hope by this Friday I will have something done.

Can you measure the diameter of your motor at the tips of cooling fins? Also, what is the distance between first and last fin?

I am curious to see what you boys come up with , the ones I have made for myself are a huge pain in the a$$ and take from 8.0 + hours per motor from start to finish . hardly worth while even doing at a resale level

Peter,
The CNC I have is a TL501 X-17” Y-8” Z-10” if memory recalls. Have been in this line of work for 25+ yrs. Relocated to Pa. a couple years ago getting ready for retirement. Hopefully August next year. Have a small machine shop with 3 lathes, 2 manual mills and a CNC with supporting tooling etc. Thanks for asking.

I used a piece of joiner tube from the local hardware store. Rubber material with 2 tie downs on the end. Add 2 plug ins for the water tubes and put the nut on the back....center section of motor puffs like a balloon, and quite a bit of water flows though. Here's a pic of what I mean. This is on the prototype motor we're working on...same principal though. This is on a finned can motor too. Cost me about $10 in parts. Hope this helps!

Joe,
Very interesting, please keep us informed how the testing goes.
Like Peter said, making one like the current 2215 and keeping the cost reasonable is a challange. There are some things on the drawing board Steven and I are working on.
Thanks

well I think I recognize the motor to be either a 2200 or 2650 kv castle neu motor to start with

the green one's with the heat fins

I am trying to borrow a Mamba Monster (Neu 1515 - 2200kv) for a test and would like to fit a water jacket. I'd like to know if you come up with anything guys. Thanks.

PS. The case diameter is 39.98 and the air cooling fin Diameter is 41.78

It is a prototype motor for 1/5th scale trucks/buggies like the HPI Baja/Baja 5T. It's a 2025/1Y 900kv. I will definitely let you all know how the cooling works. Tested it with a bucket of water, an aquarium pump, and put a load on it...works great. Can't wait to try it in the boat (Outlaw 7.5 from TT)...nearly everything is together. Waiting for batteries, Steve donated an adapter (8mm to .187...thanks again Steve!!!), and then I'm ready to go. Using Hydra 240HV. Made the motor mount myself. Will be putting vids up of the first run for sure. :)

I'll have to get a pic of it in my hand. Most definitely a beast of a motor. You've never seen a 25lb+ Baja 5T til you've seen one popping a wheelie. :w00t: And no...I am most definitely NOT kidding.

Can make your own like I did, but I think that's about it. Cost me about $10...Ace Hardware is where I got the stuff for it. Bring the motor with you...they had a bunch of sizes so I went with the one that slid well over the motor, but not too loose. Hopefully Steve is working on nice metal one...going to be a popular motor for the big boats that are being converted now.

Joe,

Yes, I could build one.. But I just dont trust $2000+ worth of equipment on a rubber hose with band clamps... Might work fine,, but if I dont feel 110% secure while running 65mph in a heat race,, I dont even put my boat in the pond! LOL:tiphat:

Not trying to argue with you Rich but if nothing else this would infact work safely. The only draw back would be clearance around your motor as the no-hub band is thick. We use these every day for plumbing. I trust them inside walls in houses so I imagine under what pressure your cooling lines have this would handle. You can get them anywhere Ace, lowes, HD. If it gets you on the water at least for now its worth it. However your ponds dont freeze so time is on your side.

I belive everything you say about the toughness and durability of these rubber jacket... Not discrediting it,, just personally want something else...

The water jacket is not keeping me off the water,, i just want to see the temps go down,, they are at 130-135 right now,, which is fine.. But I like things to be as cool as I can get them!

Your right on the ponds not freezing,, but its been raining for a week now!! I dont like running in the rain,, LOL:lol:

You just gave me a good idea...going to run the motor without the jacket on for 3 min or so and check temps. Then put it on for the second run (next day so motor is at room temp). I wonder how much good this homemade jacket will do. Thanks for the inspiration tx! Going to try and finish the boat up this weekend...batteries should be here early next week. Will let you guys know what I find!

not to derail this post but 10s2p is 2 packs of 5 cells in parallel????

It is four packs of 5cell packs two sets of 5S in series, then the two sets of ten cells in paralle.
I do not have that many 5 cell packs. I use 4 sets of 4S1P and two sets of 2S1P to make the packs I run in the 10S2P boats or T class boats.

I am thinking about designing a cooler that will work for the finned motors but they are gona be large.

HRC
10-29-2009, 06:08 AM
Thanks Peter, so the old style has the wire ties and the newer ones have the fins all the way back to where the wire ties were it seems. Does that sound correct? The motor I have is dated 5/09. Thanks

HRC,

Mine is same as Peters... No cooling in front.. Our motors have fan in the rear...

I am sure the diameter is the same,, what is the total length of fins on your 2230?

Yes the diameter is the same on both

txboatpilot, the fins on my motor measure 3.328 long. From the looks of the photo yours and Peters is shorter, hard to tell. Can you guys do a measurement and let me know please?
Looking like two size jackets are required, old and new style.

HRC
11-06-2009, 06:47 PM
Ok, here is a jacket for the new style motor. Flow rate and leak test are great.
Problem: Support for rear of motor. No room for strap style support at rear.
The jacket may work, not sure untill more testing is done.

txboatpilot
11-06-2009, 10:12 PM
Very nuce job! I have been making plates to support the rear of my motors and glassing them into the hulls,, then drill holes in each side and run a zip tie over the top to hold the rear of the motor, nice and solid...

Will this jacket clear the finned motors? If so, I would love to try one out!

HRC
11-07-2009, 07:10 AM
Thanks Steven, when time permits I will try some of the things we talked about on the phone a couple days ago about supporting the rear.

Txboatpilot: Thanks and yes this is for the finned 2230 motor, the one in post # 37 ( new style). We ( Steven at OSE and I ) have spent a lot of time and testing to date. The jacket is at the end of motor due to the fins on the new style. It may fit the old style like you have with no problems, not sure.

HRC

Thanks Peter, I just checked the fins on the motor I have and there are 31. If the old style only has 28 there is a good chance this jacket will have room for rear mount support.

txboatpilot, can you check your motor fin count and give picture? If so will send it to try out.

Txboatpilot, just curious why your making the sleeve so long. The stator inside the can is only 3" long. The cooling jacket doesn't need to be any longer than that to work efficiently. Look at the ones Peter makes. There 3" long and the motor is 4 5/8 long. Pleanty of room on either side of the jacket for clamps or what not. Your jackets do look nice.

Gentlemen,

Version #3....I bought this Neu 2230 (30 Fins) in October and needed a cooling can ASAP for the final race of the season. I followed this thread and my motor did not match the previous two versions.
I reached out to Dave on Sunday and had a the latest version at my house by Friday.
The following measurements fit perfectly;
Total Fin Width of 2230 = 3 1/4"
Available room with these mounts = 4 1/8"
Main Body of Cooling Can = 3 5/8"
Total Cooling Can Width with Rings = 3 7/8"

This latest version has plenty of room to secure a rear mount without removing fins.

Thanks Dave for your Great Craftsmanship and willingness to stop what you were doing and make this New Cooling Can as quickly as you did.

Thank you,
Mike

Glad I could help and Thank You Mike.
These motors are a challenge to make jackets for. A jacket may fit one motor but not the next. We can not assume a (one jacket fits all) way of thinking. For this reason Steven and I are very reluctant to have a standard size 2230 jacket available. They need to be on job specific bases.
Thanks again.

The 22 series is not very consistent in sizes. I have 2215 motors that are in 2225 casings........ Winds and coil length is correct for 2215, they just used a longer case.

MarkF
12-07-2010, 10:26 AM
Steven, just because the casing is longer doesn't mean the jacket has to be. The stator is still the same length and is the only part that has to be cooled. A 2215 jacket will work fine on a 2225 case.

Mark
