PROP WORK

I can sharpen, balance, detongue, and cup props in a variety of finishes to suit your needs. I will work with you on a one on one basis to deliver exactly what you need. My prices are fair and I ship priority mail all over the world unless other arrangements are made ahead of time. I have more pictures in my profile album under props and in the gallery.

http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a104/egneg/Props-ose.jpg

You can ask questions here or send me a PM if you like. Prices vary depending on the prop, size, number of blades, material, and all that you may want done to it. I am a premier PayPal verified member.

Chuck Genge

Edit: Photobucket did not allow my use of the Paypal verified logo.

I am working on it but I am still in the testing stages so hopefully in the near future I will be able to offer this as well.

Powerful SAW boats will break and bend a non hardened prop. Here's a good post on prop hardening:

I've done it a couple ways.

#1. If you really want them HARD: Anneal them at 1225F for an hour and quench in water. Do all you prop work: sharpen, balance, thin, cup etc. Then 600F for 2 hours and turn off the kiln and just leave them to cool overnight. This yields very hard props, but you can no longer work them at all.

#2. Just do the 600F step after yo work the prop. Still very hard, but you canbend them a little if you really need to.

At the place I work they have heat treat ovens. They are heated to 820 C then quenched in oil. I think my mistake was to have them tempered after that which softened them up again. I will have another one run without the tempering and see how things go. I do thank you for the information as I will keep that in mind but I am limited to the processes that they have in place as they are run with steel gears.

Just a recommendation here...

Egneg (Chuck) does great work and is great to deal with! If you're thinking of trying some of his services, I highly recommend. Don't delay! While he's offering his valuable time, take advantage and I guarantee you won't be disappointed! :thumbup1:

Not meant as critics , but : why do I never see the trailing-edge worked ?
(the only person I know of doing so is Andy Brown)
Don't they have to be very sharp aswell ?
Lots of tuned props have rounded trailing edges, due to the polishing............

Ps : I like the Octura 642 a lot ! , the edges on this one look great

egneg
04-21-2009, 07:37 PM
I always sharpen the trailing edge as this is standard procedure. I guess that I should have mentioned it but it was an oversight on my part. Thanks for bringing that up Gerwin!

Chuck (Evil Slade), what is your opinion on a highly polished finish??? As there seems to be no documented proof, pro or con?

Douggie

egneg
04-28-2009, 06:54 PM
My opinion is that it is personal preference since the of use of BL motors are now the mainstream. At 30,000 rpm and up I don't see how the finish can make that much of a difference unless you are racing where milliseconds count. As to any proven documentation I have not seen any. I asked the very same question some time back with no valid response. Although I have noticed that all the gas/nitro guys I have watched all have have polished props.

Edit: After thinking about this a bit more I am sure that the rougher the finish the harder the motor/esc have to work to maintain the same rpm.

Put a piece of glass next to a sheet of 600 grit paper. Sprits both with equal amounts of water. Now drag your finger across both and tell me in which case your finger moves easier. It depends on the application. Do you need the hole shot or do you need endurance.

How much is the cost for
a) X648 - sharpen-balance-detongue
b) X447/3 - sharpen-balance-detongue

egneg

I have 2, the Dubro Tru-Spin and the Kintec magnetic balancers. I use the tru-spin to start and finish with the kintec. As for the prices on the props that depends on whether you send them or if I buy them for you. So I need a bit more info first.

regarding polishing. There is a school of thought that NOT polished works better because there is less capillary action of the water to the prop (sticking). This is the same theory as roughing up the bottom of the hull so it doesn't "stick" to the water.

I have no idea if it's valid to apply the same theory to props but worth some more discussion.

Jesse J

Hey Chuck, does it cost the customer (us) more if you buy them or if we buy/ship them to you? or is the only difference the cost of double shipping if we send to you?
Thanks,

Jim, this question has come up many times and I recently asked for anyone who has documented proof for pro or con. No answer, it is still an interesting question, but as always there will be variables...water temperature, degree of polish or roughness..salt water or lake etc.

No doubt Douggie! One of my best friends doesn't polish his props and he holds some records and has been a consistent winner over the years. BUT he maybe could have done better with polished. who knows. He always said he balances and sharpens and leaves it at that and that he could never tell any difference if polished or not. He's been known on the scene since the 60's/70's. He just set the Scale Hydro record in Valdosta last week.

Jesse I only charge for the work I do. I have had a couple of folks ask if they can order from OSE and have them delivered to me, I have ordered props from OSE for folks, and some like you have sent me props they already have. I only add the actual cost of the prop and shipping. If I order the props sometimes I will add a couple of popular ones to have on hand then prorate the shipping.

I know almost all propellers on ships/work boats are polished, we polish our props just to smooth them out, it may reduce the cavitation burn a prop will receive over time. I will find out at work Monday.

Two cents on the prop finish thing from an airplane freak: Stability of the boundary layer is basically what your talking about here.

At low pressure (front of the prop at during boat acceleration) a bit of roughness will help to stabilize flow. In the air it is so much that for high altitude turbines there is current research into micro-jets in that area of the blade to "recharge" the boundary layer and keep it stuck to the blade.

As the speed of the boat goes up, the pressure on the front of the blade will increase, negating the need for surface turbulence to keep the boundary stable. Good old parasite drag is the villain, and the shiny prop is favored.

NOTE: The back side of the prop is always subjected to higher pressure and will benefit from shininess in all but the slowest moving applications out there (like caving tugs).

Just noticed your thread.. your props look good. Reading threw the thread is see a few things... one is sharpning the trailing edge. I am no expert by any means but... most the props i have gotten have so much (swag)(flashing) or excess metal what ever you want to call it, there is no choice but to sharpen it. Some of these props are just really bad with swag/flashing and out of balance pretty bad out of the pack, Some sizes are much better then others. Now the discussion between polished and rough.. well i really do think.... and this comes from tryin it both ways... there pretty darn close.. for eye candy you cant beat the polished prop.. if there was some tool to measure which one had less drag or performed better i would give a slight edge to the polished prop..

You are totally correct - some props are a breeze while others will give you fits. Now as far as prop finish goes that has always been a controversial subject and more than likely will be for some time to come.

tiqueman

M props are similar to X series but slightly detongued... Not sure about ABC props. I think Cleaver props generally have more of a rake and a straighter trailing edge, similar to the x or m series.. but I could be completely wrong. Also in the real world of boating, I know that chopper will lift the bow more and cleavers will lift the transom more. Choppers also have more of a rounded tip rather than a point

The M are detunged X props. The choppers are like 16xx props and the cleavers are like 17xx props. A Prather 215 would be a good choice for the ammo and a M445 for the UL-1 motor.

OK, my $1.50 on the polish or not to polish a prop. Anyone here know more than the Mercury Racing Team (or any other racing team)? You could shave looking into the mirror finish on their racing props. A smooth surface causes water adherson, just like a glass or, as an example, slicks on a drag car. A rough surface causes areation of the water and that is why we rough up the bottom of the boats. a rounded edge causes water to roll and cause a suction, a sharp corner edge (on the back of a boat, boat step, releases the water cleanly without suction.

If you can still find it, read up on the 3Ms work with Dennis Conor's Americas Cup boat that he won with in Australia.

Opps. I left out a couple of works on this statement "a rounded edge causes water to roll and cause a suction, a sharp corner edge (on the back of a boat, boat step, or the trailing edge of a prop)releases the water cleanly without suction.

The smallest X series 3 blade prop in 1/4 drive is a X470/3. Either you will need to switch to a 3/16 drive or have them cut down quite a bit which will about double the cost - it's your call.

I am sorry for the delay but I have very little free time as of late. You are next in line but I will give you the option of getting the raw props which I have already purchased ( what you paid for). I can send you the raw props or I can do the work - the choice is yours.

Again I am sorry for the delay.

Chuck

I understand your very busy. I will wait for you to get to them. Thanks for letting me know that I'm next in line.

Yes I am still doing props but I am backed up and it will be at least 4 weeks before I get to it. I do them in the order that I get the props or payment to buy them.

If you decide to go with Chuck, I have an aluminum X646/3 cut down, measuring 42mm. However, I would need it back once you receive yours from Chuck. Please note that mine is aluminum and would likely bend under extreme load if it is a large hull or a lot of weight.

Once Chuck has confirmed your order, I can get this prop out to you as a "loaner"

Yes, I have customers that have been patiently waiting for quite some time now. I am not taking any new business until I get these folks taken care of.

I know what it means to remove the flashing, to sharpen and polish a prop but what does it mean to detongue and back cut? I've been running rc boats for a while and I sharpen and balance my own props but this question always eludes me.

Just my 2cents worth, check this out.
http://www.rcprops.com/TechNotes/rcprop_tech_info.htm.

As far as rounding the trailing edge I've haven't seen this in any reserch I've done so far, all I read is to leave the trailing edge square, this helps to throw the water off the prop.
if you want to change the the rake of the prop then this is done on the trailing edge but still left square.

Detongue means to remove the forward section of the prop. Back cut means to remove a bit of the trailing edge near the hub and taper it to the leading edge. This diagram should help ...

Thanks egneg,

If that's so wouldn't detounging the prop reduce the pitch? How would this make the boat go faster? Is this only the case if the motor you are using is having trouble swinging that size of a prop or a prop with that much pitch? If your motor can swing the prop at close to its kv rating for the amount of cells you are using minus the efficiancy loss of the motor is detounging needed? Is back cutting done for the same reason? I'm not trying to say you are wrong but rather want to know before I go detounging or back cutting my props.

Thanks again.

Detongueing adds pitch as this area has the lowest pitch on average. This will help with maximum speed. Pitch is progressive from the tongue to the trailing edge. The tongue being the lowest and the trailing edge being the highest. Back cutting will lower the overall pitch by removing some of the area with the highest pitch. This will help to unload the motor. Hope this helps.

The info was helpful but what gets me is why they put tongues on props in the first place of this makes a prop slower.

If my education on the subject was correct, tongue is for the lower part of your rpm band, holeshot etc. May even help get you out of a corner faster and from my most recent discovery, detonged props aren't always faster. I lost speed on a twin I did... maybe the size or design of the boat needed that blade area?

Thanks tiqueman, I guess until I get two of the same prop I won't detongue any of my props. I did manage to get around 65mph. with a 4042 prop using a Tacon 4074 2150kv motor on 6s. All I did was balance, sharpen and polish my prop. I think I had the boat well dialed in and did a 600' measured distance from a standing start in 6.5 seconds. Taking the standing start into account I'm sure my max. speed must have been 65mph.

Guys,
I just left Chucks house (Egneg) At his request, I am closing his thread. His new employment has taken so much of his free time, that the only way to keep up with the demand is to cut into his sleep time. Those of you that still have orders with him will still have your orders completed, but he can no longer accept any new orders.

Please do not send him PM's asking for prop work.

Thank you Chuck for the years of quality service you've provided us.
