View Full Version : Hydro & Marine 50" mono Build

Gerwin Brommer

Here we go (slow)

Hydro&Marine Xray, the large version.

Motor : Plettenberg 370/50 BM
Esc : Schulze 40/160
Hardware : MHZ Z-drive type1 , with gear build-in.
Juice : Kokam 4000 30C H5 10S2P

First of all : the hull is thin, I can almost read the newspaper with the hull on top of it :sarcasm1:

So : reinforcements are needed.

Step 1 : transom , it's not a flat one, so plywood is glued in the center,
left and right from the ply : Styrodur C (Roofmate)

Step 2 : the "hips" :tongue_smilie:, next to the hatch , also very thin, I wouldn't take the risk of cracking the hull when a flip-over happens.
So the hips are filled with roofmate aswell.
Covered with glasscloth ofcourse.

Step 3 : Front-upperdeck : same story. On the pic is the strip of Roofmate that is placed under the nose. Covered with glasscloth.

Gerwin,
MHZ make some beatiful equipment, I have used an S6 drive on a Gas boat, but I don't know who has worked out their imperial to metric conversions:

1729/N Z-Antrieb - Alu-poliert
Länge (length): 175 mm (4.5 inch) 175mm = 6.8 inches
Höhe (height): 150 mm (4.1 inch) 150mm = 5.9 inches
Gewicht (weight): 695 g (7.9 oz) ?? I am unsure if this is correct?
Welle (Prop Shaft): 6,35 mm (1/4``) Correct
max Prop (max prop): 72 mm

Cheers....Tim. PS, your build look good I will be eagerly awaiting updates.:tiphat:

little update.

Mountingholes for Zdrive.
I drilled the holes for the bolts a few mm larger.
On the picture you see : bolt, aluminium tube, stainless steel tube.
Alu tube goes around the bolt.
SS tube goes over the alu tube.
The alu keep the ss tube centered.
Then the tube is glued in the hull.
It keeps oil and water away from the ply that is glued in the back of the boat.
And : if I want to change the position of the drive a bit, I can remove the alu inserts. That gives me about 1mm up and 1mm down, room for play.
The smaller holes have brass tubes inside.

Douggie,

"Keep the faith alive" , hahahaha

Okay, time for some real Dutch-madness.
Hardcore-Overkill-reinforcement-time !!!
Uni-Directional carbon 45 degree multi layer, to protect the crappy joint.
I think I'll call the boat "Fort Knox", :roflol:

Gerwin Brommer

Zdrive on the back, with the motor directly attached to it, that means an
awfull lot of weight in the back. :glare:
I absolutely wanted a bulkhead in the nose. For strenght, and to serve as
a airchamber in case of damage to the hull.
In order to be able to move the CG from 28 up to 33 % (or more) , I have
to be able to put weight in the front of the hull.
Hm, how can we do that if there is a closed bulkhead in the nose ?

Gerwin Brommer
07-12-2009, 02:46 PM
okay, okay. your wish is my command , hihi

I'm making a "watercontainer".
Formed a piece of Styrodur, it follows th shape of the bottom of the hull.
Cover it with glasscloth.
After curing i'll wash the foam out with "thinner" , attach a few pipes/hoses to the
tank, glue the tank in front of the bulkhead, hoses/pipes will go thru the bulkhead.

10S2P hardpack.

A real pain in the a** to make, so little space "inside"
Wiring : 2x 6mm
Balancing : Sub-D connectors
2,5 mm black epoxiesheet.
Cells : Kokam 4000 30C H5

I'm making a "watercontainer".
Gerwin a great idea, will you be adding baffles to stop the weight of water shifting fore and aft ?

Gerwin Brommer
12-15-2009, 04:13 AM
Andy.

Yes. 1 large one from front to back, 2 small ones from side to middle.
Witk small holes in it to be able fill the whole container.

andym
12-15-2009, 05:08 AM
It will still be a rather fluid ballast load, how about several sealed chambers?

Gerwin Brommer
12-15-2009, 05:20 AM
IF i'm using the chamber ,it will be completely filled.
The holes in the walls are very small, so the water will stay where it is.
IMO the container with baffles works better than the common used IV-bags.

Then what are you waiting for!! About time for the vid

Gerwin Brommer
12-15-2009, 05:57 AM
First I have to complete the build.
Have to make a mount for the lipo.
Give the inside the final finish layer of cloth ( very rare carbon/kevlar hybrid cloth )
Figure out how to mount the servo, I wanna let it look nice :-)
Send out the esc for an upgrade ( extra caps )

Big thanks to the guy who invented the scissors to cut kevlar !
Bought one and it works 100%.
I'm using kevlar to reinforce the hatch. Wanna make pins in the hatch, which
slides into tubes under the deck of the boat.
Pics will follow soon.

Finally a small update, after beeing forced to do nothing ( 6 weeks at home on docters order: "tennis-arms" !

Tray for the lipo glued in place, finished with two strips of kevlar, slots for velcro straps .

Could some sort of standoff not be used on the motor? I.e. extend the motor forward from the drive a few inches, and reinforce it by connecting it with the bottom of the hull somehow?

Gerwin Brommer
01-10-2010, 04:04 PM
The motor IS a few inches from the drive, if not: the flexaxle is too short to have a nice radius
if you wanna steer .

Evening Gerwin, Hey what speed you think this puppy is gonna run? This is gonna be a sharp boat!

Hey what's up with you guys across the pond ..... 1st Hans Peter has to step away for health reasons and now you too !!!!!! What's in the water over there?????

bonewar
01-10-2010, 11:29 PM
Gerwin,

Is that your water ballast tank up the front of the bulk head . I think it is a great idea to have ballast tanks in the boat . Nice one mate. BONEWAR :rockon2:

Gerwin Brommer
01-11-2010, 10:34 AM
Eodman :

I have no clue about the speed, all i know that this boat is no lightweight :-)
I'm willing to let go some speed, in exchange for durability.

Bonewar : yup, that's the water-ballasttank.

Arctic Fire
01-11-2010, 10:49 AM
Throw a sponge in your ballast tank, it will almost eliminate the fluid movement during running.. (sponge fastened down of course, not floating)

Gerwin Brommer
01-11-2010, 10:51 AM
Too late for that, the tank is completely sealed. But is has bulkheads in it, with small
holes to fill.

Gerwin Brommer

Not much, covered the inside with carbon/kevlar cloth.
Didn't turn out as neat as I wanted, cause I layed it up in one piece.
So the lines didn't stay straight.
But with all the stuff installed and the poolnoodles inside the hull, nobody will notice.

bonewar
03-12-2010, 06:53 AM
Gerwin,

That lay up looks pretty good to me mate.

Want to make me some of those lipo setups for the M12 cat.

They look awesome!!!!!

Alright lets get cracking with this build I would like to see the finished product.

Thanks for the update mate

Found some little time to work on the mono.
Servomount and tray for the rx-lipo in one .
2.5 mm carbon sheet. Nuts for servo are glued underneath the mount.
Glue : thick epoxy, coloured with the sanding-dust I collected while making the mount.

scullyeng
10-31-2010, 03:55 PM
How do you get you epoxy fillets so perfect? Are you using tape to mask off the cut lines? What are you using to apply the epoxy?

Gerwin Brommer
10-31-2010, 04:07 PM
Tape the area you don't want the glue on.
Put down too much epoxy.
Let it almost cure.
Wipe it smooth with a wet finger.
That's all folks !
