View Full Version : Miss Vegas goes electric!

Here is my Miss Vegas conversion, I removed every thing except the original motor mounts. were the hole for the muffler exited the transom I made a wood backing and then mounted the new speed master rudder. I found that the stock rudder would hit the prop if it was any larger then the Y535. I had done this conversion before but due to the manufactures sunday build the hydro was problematic, the power of the brushless motor would flex the old stuffing tube so bad, that it would sound like blender chopping ice! So tonight I decided to start over, this conversion is all new and i am trying to use stuff I have just lying around. wish me luck!

Here I installed the steering servo using mahogany blocks. on the hatch I wanted to keep the turbine intakes open, so I used water proof epoxy and glass cloth to make a "shelf" to close up the hatch.

Jeepers

I closed up the hole were the old steering rod went. I also installed the motor mount and put two layers of 6 ounce glass cloth on it.

Jeepers
06-17-2007, 03:27 AM
here i am instaling the new stuffing tube. I used a piece of brass tubing that would slip over the the motor shaft and glued it into place, i then shortened it and used smaller pieces of brass to reduce the ID and used lock tight to secure the smaller pieces in place. here is the motor with wire drive installed and a mahogany cradle to support the end of the brass tube.

Burning the midnight oil eh.. looking good, are you planning that for p hydro?yeah I will be having a couple of late nights for the next couple of weeks! Iam thinking more along the lines of a Q class hydro 18 cells or 6s packs but i will try it out on 12 cells first. she may be more impressive than i think. I should have her at the next RMTB race to mess around with!

Jeepers

cool....what motor you using?
I am using a Neu 1521 1.5d that happened to be lying around! Its specs are 1860kv 1800 watts cont, 3000 watts peak for 30secs, on 12 cells it turns approx 26000 rpm, on 18cells approx 40,000rpm, sound like fun?!

just about finished!!!! I am waiting on a 3/16 strut(couldnt find the other one), and I still have to glue the wire in the stub shaft. I will try to post some pics later on tonight! I think I will bypass 12cells and go directly to 18! It will have gps on board and if any one has a video cam next sat. a vid will be posted on OSE!

Dirty how hard was the Vegas to convert compared to the Bud?

Diegoboy
06-24-2007, 09:51 PM
My bud took me weeks, but I wasn't on that project the whole time. total hours was probably 8. I'm going to guess that his vegas took about 4 hours. It was running nitro one afternoon, by the next day, it was Brushless. He can tell you the details...

Raydee
06-24-2007, 10:03 PM
I was told there is more room in the Vegas. I just wonder if it was easier to convert?

Jeepers
06-24-2007, 11:29 PM
PLENTY of room in this hull! here is 42 cells stuffed in to give you an idea and still has room for the electronics.

Raydee
06-25-2007, 07:22 AM
Nice Jeepers, keep me posted on how it runs. Myself and a few friends are thinking about converting these hulls and having a race class with them. I know they are on the heavy side but with the power of Lipo I could use some weight.

still have not received my strut, oh well i will be out of town the next 2 days, racin my boats on a nice cool mountain lake. :D

Jeepers
07-07-2007, 12:38 PM
well I made some changes to this boat, and I just recieved my strut yesterday (2 weeks:confused:) I changed the motor mount out to a OSE unit (nice!) and modified the original strut bracket to hold the thinner unit. Steve V had an idea on cutting the front of the hatch and gluing it into place to make it easier to tape, I am still deceiding if I want to do this mod, what do you guys think?

all that is left now is to install the electronics and throw it in the water!

Raydee
07-07-2007, 12:49 PM
Def cut the hatch and glue the front on. It will making taping the hatch 10 times easier.

speed master mini rudder 4" x 3/4, at offshore electrics

OSE dr motor mount (low version) at offshore electrics

Octura 5mm to .062 motor coupler at offshore electrics

.062 K&S music wire local hobby shop

Octura .062 to 3/16 propeller shaft offshore electrics

3/16 drive dog offshore electrics

Grim Racer turn fin, Tower Hobbies

3/16 strut, octura offshore electrics

hydra 120 speed control

NEU 1521 1.5d Fullers Fast Electrics also try Diversity model aircraft (I think this is were I got mine).

Okay I cut the hatch and glued the front of the nose in place then I took a piece of 1/64 light ply and cut reliefs so that it would bend, and made a ledge for the hatch to rest on.:D

Diegoboy
07-08-2007, 04:00 PM
I don't think I would have done that. (cut the nose off the hatch). So the hatch is now easier to tape, & easier to come off if it ever flips.
Nice cutting job though!!

Nice cutting job though!!

ever since i have been using good hatch tape my hatches have not come off even through some good flips ( see my mono vid under "I hope this works") so i am not to worried to much, but its gonna take some speed to to flip it :D as its almost 4.5lbs and all it has in it is motor, steering servo. The cut made me nervous but thanks for the complement, Deigo!

Nice job, thats what I would have done. That is the way they do it on the Sport 21 Whiplash hulls.

So when is the vegas going to get wet??

True. But that mono hatch doesn't have that Ginormous scoop on the top. When that hits the water, it'll create a drag, ripping that hatch right off the tape that holds it down.
Just my thoughts.

:( well I took her out for a test today, I even took the camera guy with me. and what happend, boat goes 15 feet and stops, the problem turned out to be the motor coupler tried tightening the set screw and it just spins in the threads. so I have to pick up a replacement tomorrow, It seemed all right when I checked it before I launched it.

Im going to start my conversion this weekend.

I read that you built a shelf for the scoop. Did you fill it with anything?

when I did that I stretched a piece of glass cloth and secured it with CA on the edges then I just brushed finishing resin into the cloth, so the turbine openings are open from front to rear, but sealed the hull from the big openings, if you know what i mean.

there is another hatch mod I am thinking of performing, it is to shorten the "exhaust" so its not so difficult to tape there.

have fun with your conversion post it so we can see it. :D

My concern is that in the event of a blow over or flip the scoop my fill with water rapidly and tear it of at speed!! not good. Ill come up with somthing to fill this area and let you know....

well guys I made the first test run, I started with a 442 and just made a 1 minute pass to check the temps, everything came back cool. as the light was getting low I made no changes or adjustments, so I just ran 2 packs and called it a night. 1st run 35mph and 2nd 35.7mph both on 12 ib 4200s. not bad for a new boat that weighs in at 7 lbs, definatly needs lipos. and a diet!

sorry no video tonight, for some odd reason i asked my wife to take video of it and she took pics instead.

I was thinking 6s on my 1521 1.5d should get me into the mid high 50s easy on a small prop so those speed should not be a problem. as for speedo well just for added insurance use the biggest one you have, in case your prop selection is way off. i use a mgm 160 amp now when I test a new boat

I ran the above motor on 18cells in my 30 inch mono (for grins) on a x438 and it was INSANE! wish i had the gps at that time!
