View Full Version : Veles Fast List!!!

I thought the Fast List that Keagan created for the Zelos 36 is a great reference tool for us, so I figured I would copy his lead and create one for the Veles 29. I am pretty sure some info has changed or may be incorrect but this is to start with and I can update as the info comes along. If any members want to post their MPH and props here I will add you to the list. I can add a metric for Mods such as motors, esc, etc. For those missing props on this list is because I can't confirm if it was stock or another prop. Let me know and I'll add them. The list will be sorted by the fastest. Also I'm sure this boat will see twin motors or upgraded Motors down the road, so I have added a Modified section as well.

The trophy ________ has is the modded trophy (no longer stock motors or ESCs) The trophy MADRCER holds is the stock configuration trophy (ESCs & Motors remain factory). It is pretty obvious why _______ holds that coveted shiny trophy. I would of loved to get these trophies to the right side of the info for each member but the forum ain't having it.

A few rules and comments are below.
1. Must show proof. Either GPS or Data Log
2. In the event of a tie (same speeds ran) the person who has the most documented run (video, Datalogs, etc.) would be the one that holds that spot.
3. Must be a OSE Member.
4. I'm sure the ones that view this would want this to be good useful information for reference and a lot of newcomers will indeed view this so I would think that most hobbyist would like to see speeds from a practical setup that one can run safely in a SAW type run with without risk of burning their stuff up.
5. I don't check the fast list daily but I'm pretty active on the forums still. If you want me to add you, post here. If I don't within 2 days, PM me please!
6. Disclaimer I have requested that people give practical setup information, so with that being said, myself or OSE can not be held accountable or responsible if you try any of the below setups and something happens to you or your boat. If you elect to try these setups on your boat you are doing it at your own risk!

Since I am a big fan of the Dynamite 3831 motor I have created an addition to this thread below I have added some other notable speeds that I have found on the forums from a Veles 29 and or a 3831 equipped boat such as its predecessor Miss Geico 29 or Black Jack 29. I didn't add any Zelos 36 speeds with 3831's since there is already is a Zelos fast list that covers them already. If anyone wants to be added please post and let me know your numbers. Thanks and I hope this reference list helps someone down the road with their setup.

Other speed reporting's from a "stock" Veles 29, UL-19 or any "other" 3831 equipped boat if anyone is interested. I'm not saying that I recommend all of these props but just wanted to pass some info.

I finally got a run in with the Veles today. Had real good conditions, no wind, calm water. Unfortunately, my run didn't last very long. The steering servo gears stripped out rather quickly. I know that I could have gotten more out of it today had the gears not failed. Anyway, this is what I got..Sorry but I don't have a video. GoPro is in the works. 154165

A couple of runs today with the Veles on a windy day. The first run I was running 4s 2x2s 5200mah SMC 90c 100% all stock (prop and all) and got 42mph. In these conditions the boat ran pretty wet running 4s and strut adjustments could be made to gain a few more mph if I was more into 4s running. The next run was a 6s run with a 1716 using 2x3s SMC 5200 90c lipos and got 72mph. However in all fairness the conditions weren't the greatest for the SMC's for matching apples to apples. I will give them another shot one day in better conditions and see if they can do any better, but I would say they perform pretty close to my Gens Ace packs in this boat. The 6s video will be posted below in the next post due to the one video limit on each post.

For anyone looking for touch up paint for the Veles I have found a combination that looks decent. It's not an exact match but close enough for me. I mixed some Testors Sublime green with Gloss Bright lime and It blends in and matches where I have to really look for the spot in order to find it, so I am ok with it until something better is found. I believe this could be made an exact match if one wanted to keep mixing until you mixed the exact shade. In the below picture with me holding the two bottles together you can see the spot that I touched up with it.

I had the opportunity to run the Veles today. Ran it on my SMC 5200's 3S lipos, ABC 1716 prepped by myself. I had an issue with the lipos. I just got a new charger and think I may not have had it set properly. Don't think I got a full charge. Damn thing was cutting out and sputtering on me during a full throttle pass. In any case, this is the run today. Had flat water, no wind, cool air temps. Ran 63.5 mph. Getting there, but not there yet. Video is a bit grainy, not sure why. I should have just kept it recording while I unscrewed the hatch. I uploaded 2 videos instead.

So, I was only able to get a 6s run in and I only got 73.2mph. I believe I can Hit 60mph or get very close with my Revo 4s pack. Oh well maybe next time.

I just ran my 4s comparison run today of my Revo 435 series vs my 2x2s SMC's. Water was glass and no wind, perfect conditions for 4s or 6s.....Well the 2x2s 5200mAh SMC packs win in the shootout 56.3mph/57mph vs 54.2/54mph for the Revo. Below is the video of the Revo test scroll up in this thread for the SMC run. When the boat was taking off and trying to get on plane it looked like it had Hydraulics and "three wheeling" on water...lol! But when it got on plane it handled very well with the single 4s Revo "house brick" on the left side and offsetting the torque twist nicely... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2MSV2-_3ZKE

For anyone who is interested, that member is me. While I have not been in the game of fast electrics for more than 8 months, I feel in that short time, my prop prep work has improved significantly. Not claiming to be the best by any means. Just want to see how fast my prop would run with someone who has more experience with setting up one of these boats than me. Bottom line..... I have the same boats as does Mark. In fact my Zelos is supposed to have more power than his. Still, I have not been able to come anywhere near the speed he runs. Is it my props or my set up? Maybe this little test will tell the tale.

Vinny, With all fairness it was windy and I soaked a poor handicapped boy in his wheelchair trying to run in a strong sidewind, he was a good sport though and I let him drive my tug boat around to make up for getting him wet... but test #1 of Vinnyp's ABC 1716 prop that he s&b himself. The wind was strong blowing into my face which was pushing the boat very close to the dock and I may have left a few mph on the table. I will have a follow up test in the coming days to verify if this is all his prop has in it.

Thanks for testing it out. Was hoping for better numbers, but it is what it is. As you said, maybe a few mph left with better conditions. You have to admit the prop looks good. Maybe better than it performed. You are a brave man to touch that prop with the lipos plugged in. If I did that, the radio would blow over, land on the throttle trigger and the prop would cut my fingers off.

No not intentionally. The pictures sure make my prop look like a 1715. Need a pitch gauge to be certain. I was going to invest in one, but don't have it yet. Wonder if it was mismarked at ABC??? Has this been noted before? That prop came from Bonzi. At the time OSE didn't have any stock.
That 1716 on the right certainly appears to have more blade than the one in the middle. Maybe if time allows, a test would be to run your 1715 and my 1716 back to back. Blackcloud strikes again.

12-05-2017, 06:22 AM
Mark,
I had a thought. When you first looked at my prop, you said it felt sharper than yours. Then you weighed it to compare to your 1716. Mine weighed 1 1/2 grams lighter than yours, a considerable amount. I have seen variations in the weight of these props when they arrive from ABC, but not to that extreme. In the case of my zelos, I make every effort to get the weight of the 2 props as even as possible. In this case, I had no other 1716 to compare to. I know how much I take off each blade as I work with a scale. It shouldn't be that much. When you have the time, I would like you to weigh my prop to compare to your 1715, that may give us some more information.

vinnyp
12-05-2017, 08:28 PM
That was a nice looking run, right up to the point where it took flight for what maybe 75 feet or so. It had to have hit a partially submerged branch or debris of some kind. Are there any turtles in that pond? There are 2 nice fresh water ponds right near my house that I don't run in because they are loaded with turtles. If it was a turtle, that turtle just had a real bad day. No worries about if the prop gets damaged. That's part of the game. Remember when I told you I wrecked a pair of 1817's on my zelos 2 weeks ago in very similar manor. Only I wasnt up to speed when I hit something. Your Veles seemed to be humming right along when it hit. If nothing else, it made for a real cool video. Thanks for testing it out.
Getting to the prep work I did. I know I took .5 grams from each blade. Then a small amount to get the balance right. I cant see how it got so much lighter and thinner than yours, but the scale doesn't lie. Is the jury still out on whether this prop is a 1715 or a 1716? I know I am confused about it. I don't have the knowledge of how to harden props yet. Its a skill I hope to learn soon. I don't think the hardening process that was done to your props would make the prop any heavier but not certain.

MADRCER
12-05-2017, 09:08 PM
Very seldom do I see a turtle in this water. As for the prop I think it is a 1716 but I think you have manipulated it just enough that's it is hard for me to tell. I for sure thought it was until I put it right beside mine. It is stamped as a 1716 and it's probably very rare for it to be stamped wrong so I would say it is and 5 mph or so has been my findings from a Pro prepped prop and a non Pro prepped. Obviously the gap is closer on a Pro prepped vs. Pro prepped, but I like to put my mind at ease, so I let one "Pro" handle mine and he always comes through for me.

vinnyp
12-06-2017, 06:47 AM
Excellent comparison, conditions look very similar. Except without the unexpected flight at the end. I saw your post on YouTube. Sounds possible that the breakaway bolt just failed. You would think if it hit something, there would be some damage on either the rudder or prop.
I learned a few things from this. I may not lean on " the grind stone" so much on my next prop. No hurry in sending it back to me. I think I am done for the winter.

vinnyp
12-06-2017, 08:45 PM
Ok you talked me into it. Just remember, I am on Long Island New York with the ocean on one side and the Long Island Sound on the other. Its gets cold here. On the other hand, I do believe there is a 70 in that prop with ideal conditions. If I can, I will try to run again. Soon that bay I run in may freeze up. Salt water or not, it does freeze. In the mornings, there has already been skim ice covering the canal at work. But there is a good amount of fresh water run off there from the streets. No run off at the bay I run.

In the mornings, there has already been skim ice covering the canal at work. But there is a good amount of fresh water run off there from the streets. No run off at the bay I run.

Vin I ran for years in the winter at the old Baldwin boat ramp when the fresh water was hard

Thanks Chris.. I have run at the Freeport ramp a few times, but its best to go at slack tide. The water can rip in that little canal.

Horrible weather for the past few days, nothing but wind (perfect weather for flying a kite). However all these goodies will make up for it welll! That prop in the top right 2nd row is the one that I'll be looking to break my record with. You know you got something special when your prop guy gives the prop a born on date! It looks like Santa is coming early this year!

The best I can get is 68.8mph with Vinny's prop in my boat with my setup. The water was glass and perfect no wind at all. I almost didn't make it to the lake in time before it got too dark. But just enough time for one two pass run. No video because the big rush out the door and I didn't get time to check the battery in the camera and of course it was dead when I got it out at the lake. It was getting dark quickly and I'm not sure it would have been a very good video anyways. Below are a couple of pictures.

Sorry to dig up an old thread and double post, I only did it for reference and verification since the doubters are always lurking...:spy: I'm still mad at myself because I ran this close to the dock AGAIN and had to let out early due to the bank and fisherman. I knew that I left some on the table in my last run due to running too close to the bank and having to let off early. Today's run the speed was 81mph by the logger and 80mph by the Dynamite gps. Thanks to Travis (kfxguy) for some of the best and FASTEST flex shafts that I have ran...Lol! Please see the end of the video for shout-outs and for the data-logger speeds explained for anyone doubting this run this will show you how long the boat held 81mph. It clearly shows that the boat hit 81mph for several steps in this run. Wow that thing is hooked up nice run I could only get 59- 61 mph with my Blackjack and then it was very close to a blow over with the stock electronics and a Dasboata custom 642 wanted to ask you when you set your prop strut height how many millimeters high is it from the top of the mount? I have always have mine set at 3 mm above the and seems to be the best I can get any higher it wants to cavitation any lower and it keeps the nose down and slows too speed . Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Ronald! I run an OSE strut and If I remember right it is slightly taller than the OEM Geico strut....but I haven't ever measured the distance above the top mount. I always measure the strut distance up from a level surface since I like to run a certain degree of + or - to my setups depending on the conditions and it would be a nightmare to measure 2 or 3 places on top of the mount (for me anyways) since on my setups the top of the strut is rarely ever perfectly level. My setup running an abc prop is totally different than yours with a x642 prop, but with that prop "ballpark" should be somewhere around 1/8" up from the bottom of the sponsons and level. Good luck with it!

I am no expert in rc boats but i have run offshore power boats in both salt and fresh waters and have seen no noticeable speed differences . Maybe there is a difference in these little hulls we play with, don't know for certain. I don't have any real testing to back up it up either way. In any case, I am not here to try to outrun anybody but myself.

Hull and motor mount are solid on the veles;as for the motor:up to 40x82 will fit easily-additional motor support-plate recommended on the heavy ones though.
Is your veles already fine tuned and maxed out with the stock motor/esc combo?Madrcer has demonstrated more than one time of what the boat is capable if it is well prepped. Also think of runtime as your are limited on that narrow hull to use 3s in series-i once tested 2x 3800 mah 6s in parallel and that was a mess.Good luck.

2400kv is too high for 6s in this boat or any other single equipped boat. Get you a Prather 220 or a x642 prop from dasboata and on 6s temps won't be an issue on with the stock 3831 motor. Speeds will be in low 60's running laps with a decent setup.

MADRCER
06-25-2019, 11:50 PM
Yes, Assuming they will fit in the battery tray. Be careful running this boat on 6s (2x3s lipos) with the stock prop will overheat your electronics. If you want to run 6s you will need an Octura x442 prop to safely do so.

5s is the best option for decent speed and low heat while running the stock prop. (1)-3s pack and (1)-2 s pack of the same mAh and c rating. 5s 5,000mAh will get you around 4min of playtime.

can i use a rhino 3s 50c 5000mah as 2s 50c 5000mah nano-tech?

MADRCER
06-27-2019, 07:09 PM
You could, but by them being made from different companies you could potentially have issues if one was weaker than the other. I would only recommend using the same c rated packs that have the same mAh and that are manufactured by the same company. Those 50c rated nano-tech's I believe are rated at 25-50c, meaning 50c is the max output of the pack. You need a pack that can tolerate at least a 50c discharge such as the nano tech 65-130c rated packs. This forum has a lot of threads on batteries and if you do a search I'm sure you can find answers to all your questions about batteries.
