I just scored this little Dumas Scarab from Trade Me (our version of Ebay) here in NZ. I was tossing up what drive setup to do in this but now I have it in my hand it will just have to have a P1 drive. The plan is to see if I can get some one to make me some new vinyls and to strip, repair, tidy up and repaint the boat. This one will be just a fun runner, and I,m thinking that the P1 drive running 2s2p should give a good scale speed with long runtimes. A build thread will follow.

That's sweet! I have a 30" Dumas v-bottom hull as well, it's not the Scarab version but similar, with a P1 drive on the back. Looks like the transom of the Scarab is angled like my hull, you will have to make a wedge shim to mount the drive perpendicular to the bottom of the hull. I just ran mine for the first time last weekend, I was surprised how fast it runs on a 3s 5000ma pack, it scoots! I run a Swordfish 120a ESC, seems to work good. I love the scale cockpit on your Scarab, that boat will look great with the P1 drive, looking forward to seeing your build!! I have finished thread of mine just below this thread that I posted just the other day, and somewhere I have a build thread on the boat too if you need any ideas!

I was looking at your boat. I'll hunt out the build thread, I remember that too.
This is what it should like when finished.

I have a niece that does design/print and she will make me new vinyls for it.

Nice find. Funny, the model's condition is about what I would expect the full size version to look like tucked away in the back of a marina somewhere, faded dirty seats and all.

Yep I got when I realised what it was. It is in not too bad condition for a 30 year old boat. The nitro residue inside is a bit of a pain to clean out, but I have managed to remove most of it so far, just the stuff in the f/g weave.
From what I can make out, most were made as static display models without a removable top. I figure it could be a pretty rare model, but it's not going to just be a shelf queen. This will be my 'play' boat as I don't like running my race boats outside of normal racing/practice.
The bonus is I paid NZ $96.20 for this, plus some postage.

There is a product called Simple Green, not sure if you can get in NZ but it works great for cleaning the inside of an old gas boat. Excellent find btw

Yep we get simple green here. However I had a bit of a locally produced degreaser called 'Grunt'.
Here's the result.

Even have a manufacture date, 8-12-87. Makes this all but 30 years old. The top has a matching date.

The static models look great, I'd love to have one just for the mantle! But the runable version will be much more fun! Dumas is still in business aren't they?? I wish they would re-issue some of there old hulls like the S-Type Scarab. If you can find one they seem to go for good money, you definitely got a great score! Again, I'm really looking forward to seeing this build come to life!

I'd be tempted to make some moulds of this boat if I had the time, but I will just enjoy this one. I am looking forward to seeing it on the water.

I made a hatch mold for this boat already off a new, unused hull kit. I will eventually make the boat molds. Mike

Ok, so after ages... I am onto this project. I got a P1 drive from OSE the other day so it is time to get this boat done and in the water.

So First job was to strip off the decals and clean off the glue residue.

More to come as I work through this project.

So it's been ages since I updated this thread. In the end I sold the P1 drive and opted for a standard stinger setup. I also just decided to paint the boat and it has come up looking okay.

Power is a TP 3630 1500kv with OSE radier 150 esc. On a Prather 220 it has a good turn of speed (maybe 50-55kph) which is fine. It handles great and I hope to give it a bit of wave bashing this weekend. I like this boat a lot but it is for sale now to help fund some new boats.
