I'm going to work with my family and do my best to make this event this year. Been promising, and it's time to deliver!

My classes at this point, for which I actually already have boats for (shock, gasp, awe, huge surprise) are:

P-Mono
P-OPC Tunnel
P-LTD OPC Tunnel
P-LTD Hydro
P-CAT
Q-Mono
Q-CAT
P-OFFSHORE
Q-OFFSHORE

Probably have a couple others finished before February. I could also probably swing a few other P-LTD boats: CAT, SPORT, MONO.

madmikepags
08-29-2016, 07:55 PM
they wouldn't add P cat or Q offshore last year saying their pond was too small, yet they ran Q mono?????

madmikepags
08-29-2016, 08:03 PM
and please Ray if you have any control make sure its not the weekend before Valentines day!!!!

rayzerdesigns
08-30-2016, 09:34 AM
Mikey I don't think we would get enough for q offshore.. But q mono yes.. And I think we will have p cat

rayzerdesigns
08-30-2016, 09:35 AM
The tentative dates are feb 17-19th

madmikepags
08-31-2016, 12:02 AM
everyone w a q mono can run q offshore??? or run q sprint and let me run my cat w the monos?

rayzerdesigns
08-31-2016, 09:54 AM
I'm not running q offshore with my mono.. Did it at nats.. Too hard on stuff.. We will have q mono and sport Mikey..I will ask others if they are interested..I would actually like to see offshore a set amount of laps

T.S.Davis
08-31-2016, 09:59 AM
Mikey, you'll lap everyone twice if you run your cat against the monos. That thing is utter nonsense.

rayzerdesigns

Looking good for feb 17-19

madmikepags
09-08-2016, 05:07 PM
Thanks Terry!!! But I wouldn't prop it the way I ran against those big cats!!!! Why is offshore too hard on stuff ray??? me and my buddy both ran q offshore in Mi and both ran 13 laps (through a lot of traffic) on a surveyed modified M course and came back with 20% in our batts and nothing over heated? motor and speedos in both boats under 120'?? I'm running a sprintcat and he was running a DF36. If you are getting results different than that then you're doin something wrong???? Feb 17-19 looks good for me and my daughter and probably my buddy Tommy. Please run P cat then I can at least have a couple of classes to run!!!!

rayzerdesigns
09-09-2016, 02:08 AM
I think we can do p cat.. Just don't think we can field a class for q offshore.. Just saying.. I know Jim doesn't like offshore.. Im not going to run my q in offshore.. Haven't worked the bugs out of it since nats..

madmikepags
09-09-2016, 06:50 PM
Really?? I can build a DF36 in a night and have it running perfectly the next day, Q mono or offshore??? Easiest boat I've ever done, literally dropped it in the water after building it and had it running perfectly after about 3 laps.58mph in offshore, had it up to 75 in sprint trim but wouldn't go that fast in an actual race. U need to get ur *!***!***!***!** together in Q brother!!!! my *!***!***!***!** IS DIALED ur just scared to run the offshore king!!!! Oh and BTW I am the only guy ever to run more than 14 laps on a legal modified M course in Q!!!!!

madmikepags
09-09-2016, 06:51 PM
The question is........will you let me run my cat against you guys in mono.

I'll be quizzing the remainder of my guys this Saturday to see if I can get any more takers.

I assume we would leave on Thursday???

T.S.Davis
11-16-2016, 03:55 PM
That was my plan. We've done that before. We would fly the 16th.

You can fly Friday and make it to the race on time with the time change but you only get a half day of open water on Friday to begin with so to get there early enough to get our gear, get to the site, run our crap, screw stuff up.......just better to fly Thursday.

Be sure to thank the gang on our behalf. We're heading in a different direction and would like to test so to speak but we also didn't want to kick over your clubs bucket of fun either. I don't think we'll see much difference in the setups at this stage anyway. We're still learning what's what.

So many crumbs I keep finding undone. Frustrating as hell.

And what's up with the bushings in these TFL struts of late? So tight the shafts wont turn in them. That's frustrating too. ugh!

Just run a drill bit through them for a minute or two terry with some light oil like 3 in 1 it will loosen it up and the oil will make it smooth, the aeromarine ones used to be like that too, but there's nothing like a speedmaster w/ the replaceable sleeve. I would be in the same "boat" (hahahaha) Terry, but fortunately for me I have Chris and Danny Fine close to me, so I was able to drop my problems off to them and at least I know they know what they're doing.
Oh by the way Ray my *!***!***!***!** is dialed brother, so fast so crazy efficient, but unfortunately for you guys my daughter Nina will be running those boats!!!!!! My boats SUCK!!!!!

If you need to buy anything to accomodate us let me know I will be glad to pay for anything you might need. I also need to know what you will have there available at the site for drinking and eating? I will be with my daughter so i need to know if I have to grab my own cooler or not. Thanks and I'm really looking forward to seeing everyone!!!!!!

Ya know what would be entertaining?

Put Randy and I in the retrieve boat. One will be saying "slow down, I can't pick them up that fast" while the other is saying "I can't, we're taking on water"

Any of you that have raced with either of us regularly will know why that's funny.

Was that the '05 Nats where Randy was standing in the aluminum retrieve boat, moments before the F2 tornado hit? Dark clouds swirling, lighting strikes, winds picking up, folded/stacked pit tables starting to take flight. It was almost a religious experience.

When that storm came up in 05, Randy was so focused on finding a boat that I don't think he even noticed there was weather coming. We had to yell out to him. He got off the water just in time. The rain was so intense that the pond overflowed up onto the sidewalk. A tornado ripped the roof off the nearest Walmart.

It was good time. I think..............some of it I can't remember.

Ok folks final rule update on p limited motor rules.. we are going to let the size rule play out for this race.. but with a max kv of 2000.. we held our last club race today..I have been talking with Terry Davis.. and he agree to that.. so there ya go..

Hope everyone had a good time.

When you guys recover I'd like to know how the motor rules panned out. I'm pretty sure this is the first race that relaxed them a bit, and we're doing something similar for the Spring Nats.

What did you learn??

The weather wasn't too bad. Great day Friday, Saturday had some rain (delayed maybe 20 min throughout the day) and some wind, but just enough to still be able to race through it. Sunday was better with a bit of rain while setting up pits, but the pond got flooded and a huge debris field kept us from running the final round 6 of P Mono. All in all, I think we lucked out considering what the forecast was looking like before the event.

More info will spill in later, but I must say that WW XIII was the best attended ever. Thanks to all of you that made the trip. Guys came from 7 states. Mark Ferreira from Nevada, Randy and Steve from Nor Cal, Brad Lewis from Oregon, Pags, Nina Pags and Tom Baffer from New York, Terry, Tyler, Castellani and Kevin Kosciolek from Michigan, Robert Holland from Colorado and Haines/Feddy from Florida. What a tremendous effort these guys pulled off to get here to race!

My new friend, Baffer, will have 229 haunting his dreams for a few months. Or maybe my dreams will be haunted by him yelling, "229 will haunt my dreams". What a hoot. We gave him the mic during the award ceremony. Classic Tom. With all due respect to the other racers, he really is what WW is all about. Testing, tuning, learning, tweaking, and laughing all weekend long. Nina raced her heart out, even powering through not feeling well the last day. Pags was in rare form, taped up well before each heat and helping our event keep pace. The Michigan boys (Terry and Tom) brought Tyler along to play this time, as well as new racer Kevin Kosciolek. Brad Lewis ran some excellent laps with his 1/10th scales. Randy and Steve's trip was cut short due to Steve not feeling well. I hope he's doing better. It was also nice to finally meet Feddy and I'm glad to see that Ken is back in action after the theft loss last summer. It was also great to catch up with Mark Ferriera, who's still running his Insane LSH with 2030 motor from the '12 Nats! He still had my tech zip tie on the wire. And still fast, too.

Tyler Davis is my new inspiration. That young man soaks up FE racing knowledge like a sponge. I pitted for him for many heats and raced against him in a few. He doesn't get rattled. Ever. I was on his hip for 8 1/2 laps in P-Ltd Offshore, working harder than I care to admit, and finally succumbed to his prop wash while making an aggressive pass move. He is a huge force to be reckoned with, and will be at the top of this hobby shortly. Actually, he's already there in my book.

Big thanks to Richard Romero who filled in as CD at the last minute due to Lenny Blake needing to attend to some family matters. Richard is our NAMBA Dist 19 Director and is working hard on the '17 NAMBA Nat's in Vegas coming up in October. He's a class act and is a huge addition to any event he attends.

And also congratulations to Ray for pulling off his first WW event. He was pulled in many directions, like that rubber man doll you all had as a kid, but he kept it together. Thanks, Ray!

Back in the shop now after the trip to Az. It seams like no matter where I go it It is pouring rain. It was clear on the way down to Az and the first day racing. Saturday I felt like I was in a monsoon. It rained most of the way home and today a Storm is coming. I did not bring my rain coat and boots to the race, I felt it was no need to use them is a little storm in the desert. Boy was I wrong. Steve is feeling better. Good times. Always fun time when I get to hang with boat people. They are well and truly the salt of the earth. I tried to hang out in every pit area for a few minutes. If I missed anyone I apologize.

The MMEU gang fought numerous gremlins over the weekend. It is the middle of winter for us. We're racing boats stuff untested in some cases. Some gremlins we overcame. Tom's scale hung and won against some of the fasts scales I've ever seen. Kevin and I were less successful but we did manage to place in a couple classes still. Ty placed in 4 of his 6 classes. In LSH the wire drive broke twice! He had a shot at that class too were it not for that.

Tyler is becoming one of those buggers you want to race and you well.....don't want to have to race too. He was leading P mono going into the 5th round. All he really needed to do was keep finishing and nobody could catch him by points. When he saw that Haines was in his heat he wanted to race him for real. Not just bag off and take the points. They went after it hard. Ty spun and sucked a servo wire into the flex cable. Ken flipped in the same turn. Ken felt bad like he was pushing Ty too hard. Ty wanted it. Wanted to beat him heads up. As soon as I figure out how I'll upload the video. They didn't finish but it's still a good watch. For me it was "must watch" racing every time he went out. Proud dad....sniffle. haha

On the motors......

Tyler and I ran 1950's in LSH. Mine was a loaner boat and was hit twice while capsized. It was split the entire after-plain at the seem. We learned nothing with that boat. Tyler was really fast but still not nearly as fast as Presnell who was running the PB1500 motor. So no real gain in performance that we experienced. In fairness and honesty though, it was our first race with the setups. There is likely more in the tank. Enough to catch Ray? No idea. That Whip is no joke.

In offshore Tyler and Ray were running PB1500's. Ty was 10.5 laps consistent with the brand new Cyberstorm. Still needs work. Ray was turning 11.5 with ease on the 1500. That boat is a beast. I would describe it as perfect. I ran a TP in offshore with 1750kv. My best run was 10.5 laps with 19% left in the batteries. In fairness and honesty again, I was running a crap line off the hairpin on the back straight. Couldn't force myself to turn early enough. Rusty I guess. That's where Ray was killing everyone I think. There was a good line back there and I just couldn't hit it. I doubt seriously that even if I could have run the right line I would have exceeded Rays laps. He was on it. I maybe, mighta, coulda, matched but I don't think I had speed enough to win.

My gut is that the motors aren't going to make a enough difference for the average racer to exploit. The target audience for these classes isn't the go fast super freaks. It's guys that want competition without requiring an output of massive dollars on motors and speedo. I guy like Brian maybe could take one of these motors to a crazy place but he's not the average racer. There isn't a Buass at every venue. He could tape branches to 2x4 and be faster than me.

FYI, in case I haven't mentioned it before. Our guys are testing every end of the spectrum on the motors. From the original limited list to Lehner. Even some custom built motors. If it fits it runs. At the end of the season we'll see what we've learned. We'll revisit it and make changes if it looks like it's a bust.

Hey guys, what a great time, I love racing w all you guys, great competition, great friends and a really great atmosphere.

First off, thanks to Ray and all the Scottsdale model boaters for putting on a great show, especially for us guys that traveled, tents tables chairs and power enuf for everyone!!! The venue is great, even though its a little tight down on the right side it makes for great racing. Everyone there were gentlemen, showing people setup tips, building tricks and everyone willing to show people their little secrets and tricks to go fast, that's what the FE community is all about.

Next, the racing was off the hook. Some really tight racing, some insanely fast boats for the classes they were in. We really don't know how tight the actual classes were because we never saw the scores, but that's fine w me, but I think in the future you should have some sort of computer program doing the scoring and print out the results after every round.

I brought my good buddy Tom Baffer along for the ride and I "think" everyone enjoyed his antics. You must have because you asked him to take the mic and give out the trophies!!!! Tom and I have been racing cars and flying planes together for almost 30 years, his Father owns Bruckner Hobbies in the Bronx and he has been sponsoring us and running races for us all that time. I got Tom into the boats about 2-1/2 years ago and he loves it and has come a long way in a short time. Tommy and his dad Tom Sr. are good people to have involved in any type of racing. They have put together some of the biggest car races in the northeast and I think moving forward we might put something together here in the NY/NJ area.

I personally did OK in my races, my racing program was definitely not on point, I struggled with a couple of boats but my Cat, or as someone called it during the awards (my safety blanket) was my strong point, I raced it in 3 classes and took 2 firsts and a second! I didn't podium in any other class. Special thanks to Dave Newland who built me a bad ass P-Mono, I feel that this boat will be a contender to deal with at many races in the future.

Lastly but most importantly, my daughter Nina who was so sad 2 years ago when I took Ava here instead of her. She made me promise that the next time I came I took her. Well I did and we had a spectacular time together. I just love hanging out with her, she's funny, sweet, calm, cool and collected. She went prop to prop against some of the best competitors in the country. She took care of all of our charging, helped setup and break down, woke up early and stayed up late, all while not feeling well. My little girl was a trooper and I couldn't be more proud of her, not for racing, but for being my best friend all weekend long, being a perfect little lady, and doing more than what was expected of her. Oh and By the way, she wasn't going to run P-Mono because her P-mono boat wasn't very good. Just before her 1st P-mono heat she said "why don't I just run my P-ltd boat in p-mono?" I said great Idea. So she did, and in the 1st heat she placed 2nd, and then another 2nd, and so on and so on. It turned out she was the only person in P mono to complete all their heats, and guess what SHE WON P-MONO, with a P-ltd setup, Oh and YES IT WAS HER OFFSHORE SETUP!!!!!!!! I was so excited and happy for her we almost couldn't believe it.

Hats off to everyone who ran this race, who competed in this race, and who won at this race, and especially My NINA!!!!!!

Mikey, losing to Nina and Tyler was enough to make losing palatable. I was glad to hear she would make the trip to MI too.

I have video of the Baffer awards show too. Worth the price of admission.

Ty's enthusiasm is real and backed by a dad that promotes it. Thats nice to see from both of you.

Thanks for the info on the motors. Its all good stuff and the more someone races and not bench races(like me) we will have hard evidence to improve the hobby.

:thumbup1:

Ty & Nina will continue to wear us out as long as they are in the hobby. Fede won't be far behind. Good stuff guys!!

You guys that ran Q hydro. What motor would you recommend for a Phil Thomas sport 45 hull I'm building? Not sure if a 4070 is good enough or is a 5650 going to be what the boat needs.

I've run both the Leopard 5692 and the Neu 1527. Both have been solid motors for me in Q classes.

Mark,
The motors I listed are both for a 39" hull. What size hull are you looking at putting an electric motor in? Most gas hulls are larger and would require a different motor. I'm currently building a 44" "gas mono hull" and will be installing the Leopard 56110 835 kv motor.

Mark, if it's the boat we talked about just put the 1527/1y in there and be done with it. That's the goto motor for Q sport.

I am trying to get the racers to run the Offshore Class for 4 minutes in my district. We have been running heat racing oval 6 laps. Some of the guys proped down but still are killing batteries. What are some of the setup that were ran? I am trying to help some of the Nitro guys not burn up anything.

Yes I agree, thats what I have in my Q sport and mine is a Whip which is quite a bit heavier than a Phil Thomas hull. The 1527 is pretty much the go to motor for Q in my opinion. If you're looking for a bit more power the 1530/1.5D I believe is 1350 KV and can pull a couple hundred more watts. I tried it in my boat but I can only fit 6000mah in my hull and my cells got very hot. I went back to the 1527.

Hey Randy, for Limited offshore the 1500 motor (forgive me I don't even know the manufacturer) with a 450/2 prop is a good combo, thats what my daughter ran all weekend long in P-lim mono p-lim offshore and P-mono. She ran 2 4s 4000's, a lot of guys run 3700's too. If you're looking for full out P-Offshore I run a 1521/1.5D and I use a 445 /2 prop, and I use 2 4s 5000's, this is a pretty hot setup and will use a lot of the battery. You could also go w a 1515/1Y with the same prop and that would be a little easier on the batteries.

T.S.Davis

Yep, that's what Ty was running too for limited. Same everything pretty much.

Not every boat is equal obviously but that 1527/1y in a Thomas still holds the Q sport 2 lap record. That motor works in everything. Want more? Add prop. It can take it. Works in everything Q tht you can dream up too. Mono, cat, sport. Little light on kv for rigger maybe.

Ask Doby, he has decent cool Leopard setups. I think he uses 8000Mah brick packs from HK, Leo 4082 or 4092- 2000kv. Simple esc like a T180 and he will have to tell you props. His setups are quite reliable and fairly competitive. He finishes heats!!

Randy, if it were myself and I was lookin for a TP setup, the TP I would look at is the 3650/3Y (2060kv) that looks comperable to the Neu 1521, you could also use it in straight up P-mono too. I would try it and prop it with a M445 (a little less blade than the X445). It will prob be a little more efficient than the Neu 1521 B/C its a Y wind and not a D wind. Anyone think or know and different let him know.

Upon looking at the Leopards the 4082X2 motor with the 1600kv looks interesting, as we are going pretty fast with the limited 1500kv motor I would try this motor with a 450/2 or a 452/2 prop. This actually seems pretty enticing as I've been Thinking about a change for my P-Offshore setup. I have a Neu 1521/1Y that is 1577Kv I think I'm going to try that!!!!

Typically 36mm motors are more efficient than 40mm motors. Many use the same diameter rotor for the 36mm as what goes into a 40mm. Yes Y winds like 1Y's are easier on esc's.

Dunno but I'm sticking with the DYNM3835 http://www.ebay.com/itm/191717747608?_trksid=p2060778.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

If you had a perfectly fine Neu 1521 1.5D and the motor you mentioned, which would you choose over the other? I have two 1521's bought used on swap shop a couple years ago and they run awesome. P mono and offshore, just change prop.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I guess the TP 5650 motor looks good to me because it's 1/2 the price of the Neu and it's a 6 pole and a little over 100gr heavier so should have more power for more aggressive or bigger prop.
Can the Neu swing a 455 prop?

I've swung a 457/3 pitched up on my sprintcat with no problems. Also ran a prather 250 on my Q-Sport whip with that motor. The should have no problem swinging that wheel.

Are you going to the race in Needles? I signed up my T mono. For those of you that saw my T mono at WW the flier 12s 320 amp esc that I tried burned up after 4 laps. The second one I have, they sent me 2, is working fine. I know some of you were interested in the new flier esc and the first one that burned up I think was a fluke. We'll see how the second one holds up though.
