View Full Version : My new 34" mono build

sold my kbb34 and I only sold it to build another a little different. One reason is I wanted the honey comb inlay and the other is I wanted to paint it before it was complete. Yes I didn't feel like taking it all apart to paint it. Other than those two things and some other minor tweaks, it will be the same. It was a beast anyway, so why change it? I did order a custom y wind 1670kv 1527 neu for it...the other one had a 1500kv...so maybe it'll have a bump in speed. Here's the plan:

Neu 1527 1670kv 8mm shaft
Mbp collet
Speed master billet 1.5" x 2" trim tabs
Carbon fiber turn fins
Flooded tube with strut
Same rudder as before 4" I think
Sf300 lite (I have a 25035 mgm for now till the sf300's come back in stock
Radio post green servo
Carbon fiber steering rod
Billet rod end from seacraft via Keith Bradly
Abc prop (yes I've gone abc prop crazy...I bet I've got close $500 in abc props lmao)

Well I'm actually building two of these at once. One is mine and one is a partial build.

I've got the mount done. It's drying. This is the hardest and most time consuming part. I've got one shot to make sure it's perfect. Tomorrow I can start rolling. The battery tray tabs to raise them a touch are already done. Flood tube is pretty much made, I'll go over the assembly of it. It will have two sealed ball bearings to support the flex at the motor side. I found a sf300 lite Esc so its on the way too. Here's the mount. I'm using jb weld and I heat it up on low heat to flow it out. Feather with a paint brush. Let dry an hour then pull the tape to reveal some nice lines.....

Made the plate I'm mounting the servo on. I had to make a long through transom fitting because the transom r is very thick on this hull. I'm using a carbon fiber rod for steering and the end fittings are billet items from kbb.

There will be Velcro on the battery bottom and Velcro on the trays themselves to keep battery from sliding. This is a new way I started doing it because I found some good quality long straps.

I'll admit. I'm not pro painter but I decided to paint this thing the color I've always wanted the other one. I could not bring myself to take the other one apart to paint it because I was afraid id mess with the out of this world tuning that boat had. So yes, I sold it to build another one and paint it my favorite color, pearl lime green. You can't find this color in any affordable way except water base. It's a pita to work with because it will run easily if you mix just a tad too much water. The good part is if you mess up you can wipe it off with a wet rag when it's still wet. Which I did have to do because I forgot you have to do light layers and I got excited and put it on mega thick because I wanted to see what it looked like. Lesson learned lol. Here's after two light coats.

And btw, I'll shoot limco high solids clear coat on it after it dries for a few days. I painted a couple things with this and it turned out nice. Here's the paint

Put three coats of clear on it. Looks beautiful! I love this color. Wait till its on the water and in the sun. It really pops. I did end up with a small run on the bottom. I can block sand it out though. Straight out the gun it looks great. When I wet sand and buff it I imagine it's going to look killer.

That's always a debate. 1:1 boats aren't sanded are they? Their props aren't satin either, they are polished. I've tried polished and sanded on my cat and I didn't see any difference from what I can remember but I'll test it both ways again. Plus when I took the pic the paint was still wet, so it couldn't get sanded at this point.

dmitry100

Why would it be faster with the gloss sanded? Wouldn't that actually hurt speed since the gloss would be a smoother slippery surface... Thats like removing wax from a surf board

BTW... This bright green color would go really well with any sort of black-- maybe black racing stripes or anything like that...

I know it's a debate. Just looking for your opinion. Sounds like the data may be conflicting. I have heard that the issue is surface tension, but I don't understand the technical factors. I have two sanded boats, but I got them that way from other club members. I also have two new boats to prepare for club racing. I'd sure hate to sand them and have it hurt the speed. I wonder what the FE NATS guys do.

Anyway, Travis, I do love your boats and build threads.

I've been reading on it all morning. Seems like 600 grit is where it's at. Fwiw my previous kbb34 is sanded but only because I removed the hook from the bottom and didn't polish it back out. And yes I removed the hook from this one too. I'm following the crucial parts on this build to the "t" and improving some small things here and there. I hope this one sees 95ish. I have better props to play with this time too. My Cg is able to be adjust a little more too on this one.

Good looking paint right there!

I say the bottom sanding depends on what water conditions you run in... If you run on pure glass then I'd sand, if running in chop as I do then its smooth bottom. My opinion though.

Travis that's a awesome color! BTW lots of full size race boats are sanded on the running surfaces it basicly creates a air film on the surface much like the oil film on the running surfaces of an engine. At least that's the way I understand it.

Here's some better pics. I worried about the top not matching after I left home this morning (first time I saw it in the sun was this morning and the pics made the top look off) so when I got home I looked at it again. It's just the picture throwing it off because of the pearl. Whew. I was stressed lol.

Travis. When sanding the bottom make sure the scratches do not run parallel to length of the boat works much better on an angle. Parallel adds area while on an angle reduces surface tension because creates ultra small bubbles in the water. On full size boats 400 seems to be the ticket, not sure yet on rc.

Lots of updates....

So I ordered these little wire holders (thanks to Joel I show I found them) a while back and I just haven't found a use for them till now. I did use them in my buddy's cheetah but other than that I've got a bag of them. It's just the hole is too big for a small screw. Then I thought about using a rivnut and a thumb screw to hold the flap closed. Awesome idea! So now I'm using these to hold my cooling line and wires out the way. Pretty nifty.

http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc243/ltzguy/36AAC672-922C-4329-80C4-1259E02A785F.jpg (http://s218.photobucket.com/user/ltzguy/media/36AAC672-922C-4329-80C4-1259E02A785F.jpg.html)

So I countersunk the rivnut to be flush with the bottom.

Then I riveted it in the holder

Then the thumb screw holds the flap shut and holds everything in place.

Time to run the cooling line through the transom. Well o was going to use a bulkhead fitting but in an effort to keep things clean and neat, the holes needs to make a sharp turn. Not gonna happen with the fitting. So I decided to to a trim ring type where the hose slides through. Well I guess I ran out of the bigger ones. So do I order one and wait a week? Nah. I had some huge rivnuts I found I'll never use. I drilled the threads out and made it slightly smaller than the hose. Then I reshaped it to be rounded and then polished it. Voila. Trim ring in 5 minutes. Lol

Where did you get those vertical brackets that hold the motor ring to the rails in the hull? I cannot find them on any of the suppliers' web sites. I need two right now, but would buy four just to have extras.

As far as I know, you have to buy the whole mount from kintec to get them.

I haven't made much progress lately. The painting wore me out. I've got to paint the other kbb34 I'm building and I don't think the paint him I'm using is really up to the task. I'm gonna pick up a better one in the next few days so the next one will be easier. I used a harbor freight touch up gun. I thought it was the little hvlp gun they sell but it's not. That's the one I'm going to go pick up, I've read nothing but good about it. I started weight training again so I've been going inside a lot earlier and that's cutting into my build time, so things are going a little slower. I did get most of the Esc wired up, cap bank done and the battery straps and Velcro for the batteries and Esc done. I'm hoping to maiden it this weekend.

Here's the cap bank. Decided to try something different.

I almost posted how I did the Esc wiring (which took me almost three evenings!) to clean it up and make the Esc installation a lot cleaner. I've been doing all my escs the same way so I can swap them easily. Same connectors, pig tail with same connector for the bec, etc. I want to be able to swap escs quickly because I have a few different escs to try in it.

Nice build you have. The wiring/cap bank looks very nice. Those big gauge wires can be tough when joining things together, at least for me, lol. Do you run a spark arrester. Is the SF esc similar to the mgm you have. Im looking to get an esc and was leaning towards one of these to use and wondered if you had any preference between the 2.

Thx. I have both escs and have run both. Let me tell you my opinions and experience of both.....

The mgm is nice. Very nice. The driving manners are very smooth. It has no lag and will control the motor very close to what a sensored setup is like. You can turn the prop so slow that you can almost count the revolutions. It's that smooth. It seems to limit power on high power setups tho. So basically you'd need to get one with a decent amount of overhead. Very compact and the data logging is nice and easy to use.

The sf300. It's big. But not too big. I don't like the wiring layout. The data logging is not as nice but it works. It has a lag or sort of delay. The throttle isn't as smooth down low. But....this Esc puts the power down. It handles what you throw at it. I feel like it's a pretty stout Esc and I prefer them in fast setups

They do custom winds of you pay extra lol. Yea I think it's been a month. They finished my custom 1521 (whichbis way too high kv to go in this boat lol) and supposedly they are going to finish my 1527 next week. It's 1650ish kv.

Love the color Travis.... as you can see I truly like the color lol...

BTW, I also truly believe in sanding the bottom of the boats ride area only.... I always tape off the area I want sanded with painters tape, then sand and remove... I'm sure many do this also... but the tape makes it so the sanded area almost looks like "bottom paint" and looks more appropriate.

In fact I ran a new mean machine just a few days ago.... had factory finish... ran it.... then sanded hull, without adjusting ANYTHING... I didn't GPS but the boat ran faster.... and yeh no GPS it didn't happen... well it did happen... I would say 2-4 mph faster, and the boat handled better also....

Anyway Super Nice, and Clean build... not that I'm surprised with your past builds lol..... I'm in the process of finishing up a kbb too!....

Thanks Trav... The bikes a beast... Color is amazing.

Yeh the hardware is probably overkill... Its All MTC (except turn fins).. 400oz hitec HV digi trq servo to try and keep the big rudder blade in check. TP4070 1050kv... going 8, and 10s. Going to start with a x447 on 8s... and shake it out from there...

No build thread..... sorry.... its a purpose built build though... no frills just a simple interior... I mounted the servo at an angle so it would have a perfectly straight shot to the rudder, and I could use a beefy rudder push rod.... I used "hanger 9" ball bearing rod ends for steering also... years ago I had a big mono I couldn't figure why it had odd handling characteristics, all ended up being the pushrod flexing... NEVER again :)

Not to mud up your thread, but heres some more pics... its going to be a runner... not a admirer :)

Zero slack... The pushrods are bought in sets too and threaded on both ends at different lengths... Made for large scale planes... I will say making sure the alignment of our servo to rudder is on a level "plane"... Keeps the servo expos if you will the same across the rudder sweep... And a more controllable "precise" , predictable boat... Much like you'd want to have on your 3d planes lol!

I have looked a bit online and even on H9's site can't seem to find the hanger 9 ball bearing rod ends... I'll be at the hobby store soon lol, and I'll get the part number as I see he already replaced the packages I purchased... I believe they come in red too... I liked the gold...... They have no pivot ball so the linkage has to be pretty dang straight! I see the alloy ends w/ pivot balls and bearings online via ebay by other china manufacturers... Probably good too...

I think you used to care more for function over form, now you're adding some bling everywhere no more of that gray jb weld, looks way nicer now and it's fun to see every update as there's always something new.

A longer jacket would cool better I'm sure but they don't make a longer one like this I'm using and the mount I'm using won't fit a longer one anyway. It not going to hurt tho, this setup is over motored anyway.

Thanks. I try to do it better on every build. I'm still using the jb weld because I know it works but for cosmetics I brush black epoxy over it.
I try to do different things on each build, if I didn't it would get boring. There's going to be some things that I'll always do the same because they just work.

When I was deciding on color for this boat I kept thinking if I ever want to sell it, it may be a problem because not everyone likes green. Well I've figured out I haven't been about to find one person who didn't think this color looks killer. Then I had a guy try to buy it from me the other day, name your price kind of deal. I just couldn't do it. I gotta run it at least once or twice before I sell it. Lol, seriously I think I'll hang on to this thing for a while. I did finish it up last night and the wife cut me some decals for it today. Just a feeler. I think I like it. I was thinking the name was kind of cheesy, fitting, but cheesy. But now I think I'm kinda liking it. Check it out and tell me what you think. I won't get offended if you don't like it.

Your right. I added it up real quick and I've got close to $1500 in parts in it. Probably more if I really count everything. Then the paint. Supplies. The labor in painting is a good bit too. Whew. Found a couple little issues tonight as I was looking it over and prepping for tomorrow's 6s runs. The very end ball bearing came out of the strut. My fault. Was someone I was trying that didn't work. Some flex shafts, the stub end will slide right through the bearings with no resistance. Some have to be polished down to slide through or they are a tight fit. Well I polished it except the very end right before the drive dog.....in an effort to keep water completely out of the drive tube. Well it was a and idea because it caused the last bearing that it fight tight in, to come out from the shrinking of the shaft under power and then letting off it growing back to its normal size. No big deal. Just something that I wanted to try. Now I know it don't work. So I put the bearing back in, staked it in place and polish the shaft. All should be good now.

Next. The drive tube was straight at the end. Boat was running pretty wet so I needed a touch of positive. While I had the strut out I bent the drive tube just a bit so I can get my positive but it will also go back to level if I need to. As it was I had it negative during my runs. I think it's got a bit left in it with 4s. But do keep in mind this boat weighs over 10lbs I'm sure. Last one was 9.7 and this one has more weight to it. I think the way it is, is right in line with my original one. It did 51-52 on 5s but amazingly jumped to high 60's on 6s. I think I got 69 out of it with less kv so I know it do able. Stay tuned, I'll be running again tomorrow.

The 1527 is 1650kv. Still not here yet. I'm sorry I even ordered it now. This 1530 is ridiculous. I only have one video of it. I've been going by myself. I did have my son video it just now on one of the runs but it flipped on that one. It's like I let off and the radio glitched and the throttle event wide open for a sec and it flipped and broke the hatch.

Busy at work. Lol. The thumbscrews I got off eBay. They come from zoro tools. Do a search for stainless 8-32 thumbscrews. I use 3/4" or 1" depending on what I'm doing. They aren't cheap.

What I did on the hatch was mill a square a little deeper than thee layers of carbon fiber. So those three layer sit flush and take the place of fiberglass. Then once that cured I did a two layer inlay on the whole hatch. I cranked down on the screw to see if it would break again. Nope. I was prepared for it to break again. I have another on order anyway. The seam also has a hairline crack on each side. Must have been a hard hit. I sanded the seam with 30 grit and reinforced the crap out of it. I grabbed the side rails and tried to twist it and pull it apart but it didn't even creak. It's much stronger than it was. When I get a chance I may sand it down and fill the crack and repaint it but for now I'll leave it alone for now.

Some nice hatch bolts I got off of ebay ... Just received some of each type just the other day (I'd prefer the first one... lots more grip space, but that depends on your preference and size of boat):

1. http://www.ebay.com/itm/151506903934?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
2. http://www.ebay.com/itm/161513489812?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I plan on using these to use as thread inserts:
1. http://www.ebay.com/itm/261920696526?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&var=560749548468&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
2. These can work too I think: http://www.ebay.com/itm/261611904720?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&var=560486204988&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I got a bit of both of these types. Link #1 seem to be more suitable for the job I think because the wall is thinner and it would need a smaller hole compared to the Link #2 thread inserts... especially good if say you have limited area/space to place these thread inserts like I do.

kfxguy: have you ever compared performance between typical bushing bearings and ball bearings before? I'm tempted to do a side by side test comparison once I get my new china stingers in. I'm always getting mixed answers-- got an answer from MHZ saying "ball bearings for drives is technical nonsense. Ball bearings do have a ball of approx. 0.6-0,7mm diameter - 50.000 or 60.000 rpm and the ball wont last since the max. rpm is more than 10 times as high as it should be. " when I asked if their HS drives have ball bearings. lol. I dunno though... the boca bearings I got are rated at 70-80k rpm.

Do I think the help with speed? Possibly. If your shaft is out of lube and it's tearing the bushing up (seen it happen) then in that situation the bearings have a clear advantage. If the bushing is well lubed then probably not. But here's why I do it. Several reasons.

1) allows a more accurate fit between the shaft and bearing. It eliminates side to side movement. So the prop is more inline. Advantage I think. Note: you must make sure the shaft can freely slide through the bearings. If not it will loosen the bearings because of shaft shrinkage. I size the stud shaft down a little with it chucked in a drill and 400 grit sand paper.
2) lessens the amount of water that would travel up the flex because of the more accurate fit.
3) cuts down on bushing replacement and maintenance. If I forget to lube the shaft it won't eat it up.
4) quieter. Not a big deal but it sounds smoother.

I haven't had to change any bearings yet. The ones I buy are rated for 60k rpm so no problem there.

They get done on 95% of my builds.

Tip: you must use at least 5 of them stacked or the side to side forces will cause them to become short lived. It's also more support for the shaft which is good. In short, if I didn't think they were worth it, then I wouldn't bother. It's a bit more work to do as I have to setup my lathe to do it. Don't think your going to be able to drill by hand either.

Guess I'll give a little update to this thread. I ordered a custom made carbon fiber hatch for it because the crack bothered me. The thing cost me like $140 lol. Then upon further inspection I found that the Seam had cracked about 6"-8" down each side. I ran the carbon inlay higher than the seam but I guess it just wasn't enough to hold at 80+mph flip. The reason it glitched is unknown but the 1530 neu motor I put in it was sent to me by mistake and ended up being 2900kv. Neu took care of it and sent me the correct motor but I had lost interest in a cracked boat. I had thoughts on sporting it at lower speeds but that's not why I built it. I reinforced the heck out of it but never felt like fixing the crack. Painting isn't my thing although I did a very nice job on this one. I could not sell it without fixing it correctly so I ended up giving the hull and hardware to my buddy for his birthday. I ended up doing a deal and getting another brand new hull and hardware so I'll be building a new improved version soon. (Carbon hatch will be on the new one) Yes it will be that green. I love it! (Sorry for the repeat info as I mentioned this in another build thread if you saw it)

I did this to cover the cracks
