Hello Folks,
Time to build another Hi-End boat, its been awhile but I'm getting stuck into it again. Sadly this boat is not for myself but a custom build for one of our fellow forum members :thumbup1:

Hull: MHZ 114 Carbon/Kevlar
Motor's: LMT 2240/7 LK
ESC's: MGM X2 25035
Drives: MHZ Hi-Speed Drives
Rudder: MHZ Scale
Collets: MBP
Servo: Savox 1252
Props: Andy Brown x447

This should be a very capable setup, and I'm sure a fun project to put together.

...let the build begin

That's what I thought. Have you run these before? They are reasonable in my books as long as they hold up.

Thanks,
The 138 Hi-Speed's were listed some time ago, When I placed the order I asked Shirley at MHZ if I could get them for the 114 and she sent them :)

Never ran those, but I have good experiences with MGM in general and have seen some heavy abuse on the 25065 without failing. I'm positive they will hold up fine for this project and have good control over the LMT's

TheShaddix

So you're using drives made for a 138? OR they have 114 drives but just don't list them? I would be really interested in these drives too! The mbp ones are a bit too costly.

nata2run
03-03-2015, 12:10 AM
The drives are made for the 114, but cost wise they are close to the MBP mini drives. But keep in mind these were made specific for the 114 and you don't have to modify or shorten them in any way. They seem like a cool design with small "fins" on the tip of the drives. If proper installed in line, I think they will perform very well.

Hello again,
Thanks Pheyd :)

I got some more work done last night (I'm always a day ahead of the post by the way LOL) as most of you have seen, I'm a fan of templates, jigs and tools in general that will make the job easier for me. That said, it don't mean that it cant be done in other ways, I just don't like taking risks that result in "fill in epoxy jobs" Since I was dealing with a new power drive I had to make a completely new jig. This new drive uses 2 M4 screws appose to 3 M3 in the standard drives. It also requires a smaller hole for the stuffing tube as it don't have the bushing/bracket on the inside of the hull. In my book, this calls for an even more precise drilling and alignment. (because of the 2 point hold down compared to 3). This is how I did it. I first apply a few pieces of masking tape on the hull. 2-3 layers are usually good! once that was in place I used a scalpel to cut off the excess tape from the edge. After I pealed off the tape gently and applied it onto a standard sheet of paper and scanned it with my scanner. From then on I traced it and did a print out to see if it all fit. At this point I realised that I needed to lover the drives by a mil or so (1/20') roughly.

...continued

nata2run
03-03-2015, 11:07 PM
...After all that was completed, and I redrew the jig, I cut it out in 12mm acrylic (1/2") Before any further actions I had to make sure the drive train would fit as planned. Here is the complete unit. I should mention I'm using an aluminium 8mm tube to fit the thick walled teflon stuffing tube.

128670128671

Here is the final jig ready to install on the hull

128672

Now to the very important part! Since I was asked about drilling holes, I will elaborate on the subject a little closer than planned.
I always make a habit of using tape for cutting/drilling/milling, sometimes multiple layers. The reason for that is, most tools (drill bits, router bits) are up-spiral, meaning they exhaust their cuttings away from the material. That also mean that they "eat" what they come in first contact with. If its gelcoat, it usually result in chipping. By using tape and a jig it will eliminate that with up to 90%. By using a high speed drill it will eliminate that even further. Vibration from the drill is also a major issue, again the jig will help to reduce the vibrations. I even have jigs made up with pre-drilled holes to keep the drill vibration free (egg shaped holes) when just drilling a random hole.

Awesome, man! Very professional work there. Even the masking tape trick alone is a great one to take from this thread. Never thought of doing that, makes a lot of sense to layer it up to keep the gelcoat from cracking.

Thank you, to give you an idea of how I mask and cut cf plate chek one of my videos http://youtu.be/9EZyOlME6xg (my attempt of fancy editing lol) it just shows that it's a habit for me to mask everything I cut to avoid burr and get a cleaner cut.

Wow Kent, this is like deja-vu. It's like watching my own MHZ Mystic 114 coming together. I have been taking photo's of every stage just like you. I'll have to get round to starting a build thread. Then folks can watch how are builds are progressing and see how we diverge when it comes to the internal fit out.
People maybe interested to know that my component list is a little different:

Motors: LMT 2240/8
ESC's: MGM 28026-3 X2 Series Pro

The rest is pretty much the same with the motor mounts heading towards me from Custom Carbon Fiber Parts in OZ. Kent made them for me with a little visual design feature …….. all will be revealed later !!!
I'll keep you'll posted as things progress.

Hey Steve,
You should do a thread! would be interesting to see what you have come up with, I'm sure it would look great!

Ok, back to the build. I am forever trying to find the best way to get the drives aligned. This may not be the easiest or best way, but its so far the most accurate way I can think of. The ole "drill bit trick from Manuel W. still tops it off as a final alignment" But the "drive hold down's" are still made in a way on the MHZ's that make it complicated to place on the hull and use as a template. For that reason I made my own block that can sit flush on the hull and allow me to drill the 4 holes to hold it down further.

Here are all the blocks used...

128863

After everything was aligned and the 4 holes were drilled, I used the 2nd block as a drill guide. This block was stuck down with double sided tape and also the 4 screws through the block. ( I didn't bolt down the block, just used to screws to hold the block in place)

I'm finding less and less time to post and upload pictures of this build. But I thought I'd keep you in the loop of whats going on. I had to completely redesign the motor mounts for this particular build, as I want to use CF veneer for decor also. I have so far made 3 different versions and not 100% happy :( but good news is, I think I got it!! once installed, I will post some photos. After that stage she will go straight to the painters....

Kent, do you take the hardware off when you send it to the painters?

I'm also building an mhz 114. Does your rudder bracket fit onto the hull? Mine doesn't want to slide into the cut-out area which seems to have too much gel coat. What do you recommend to shave off some of the material precisely?

I only install the whole drive train and rudder, then I strip it all and send off for paint. Water Pickups, exit tubes I drill and install after the painting is done. I don't like the look of paint over predrilled holes, they tend to look egg shaped or become smaller then what they were suppose to be. If you then have to open up the hole, its more likely to chip. Regarding the rudder, it fits really bad, not bad but tight! fit and drill it while its tight, then file a bit on the hull to make it slide in better. You will most likely chip a little paint once you install it. Its one of those things, hard to tell how thick the paint is going to be, so very hard to judge

Got a bit more work done the other night. Instead of using just plain washers where the drives mount to the hull, I decided to install a support plate. It's commonly used in builds like this, but I haven't done my builds this way prior. The reason why I'm using it this time around is because I really want some support on the stuffing tube in that end. I think it came out nice and serves the purpose. I also got the motor mounts cut and will be posting the update a little later when I complete the inlay.

Got some more work done over the weekend, as I explained in an earlier post I had to redo the motor mounts a couple of times. (just cut them in acrylic to begin with) I try to match the mounts to the specific build and the placement in the hull also. The aligning is a bit tricky! I usually spend a bit of time on that part. I have gone away from trying to measure inside the hull and and judge the distance. I now always complete both flex cables/shaft to the exact same length and use them as a guide to where the mounts need to be. That way I know they are in the same position. I then use what ever I can find to elevate the motors from the sponsons. I also don't complete the stuffing tube until I'm happy with the bend of the cable. In other words, I feed through the cable and make sure that it has the perfect bend, and can spin freely without too much slack, then I build the stuffing tube around it.

The gluing part as usual....masking up the area, then sand and clean both motor mounts and hull with brake disc cleaner.
The process for gluing in the mounts was:
CA spot gluing to make sure mounts were in the right position, then a mix of epoxy with CF cuttings. Once it started to set, I then laid 2 layers of tight glass weave around the edges (roughly 1/2") and on top of that some tinted epoxy with a small amount of micro baloons.

Got some more work done over the weekend. I always try to get nice looking stuffing tubes :) I made a set wrapped in Carbon and a set with mesh wrap as well just to see what looked the best. Although I really liked the mesh wrapped I went for the carbon in the end. I also cut the lipo trey's but will post about them a little later. at the moment I'm working on a stuffing tube support (wanna try something new) but I'll have to see if it works first. I really like using aluminium on the stuffing tubes and it bends really smooth, and could be polished to a chrome finish for some fancy effects. As its a little soft, I would recommend that it gets some sort of epoxy coating to keep it firm.

Here are some images to keep the build rolling....

Looking great! Do you put a clear coat over the tubes or just leave as is? Also, i see you doubled up the motor mounts. I have the same mounts but worried they might be too weak. Do you double them up only to be able to fit that colored layer in between or do you do this to add strength as well?

nata2run
03-30-2015, 04:40 AM
Hi,
I don't usuall clear coat the tubes, as they come out quite clean. You could brush some epoxy on them if they needed I suppose. The double motor mounts are purely for strength, the fact that they have features cut into them is just a bonus. I would say the way I glue in the mounts hold better than a single mounts with a back support. Of cause everything is relative, but a friend hit a fence in a large 185 going 90mph and no mounts came out. If you have double mounts you should use them and support the sides of the mounts with glass or cf cloth.

I wouldn't recommend trying the same to see if mounts hold up thou. Anyway, I've been on the drawing board all night as my drawings didn't entirety fit the layout of the ESC's. They fitted but I wanted to move the ESC's in a way that I didn't have to lengthen the wires. The way it's setup now seems perfect to me. 5" or there about of wire directly from ESC to motor. Got some more work done over the past few days. As promised here are some pics of the lipo mounts. We decided to go with the Mystic theme for those since its a mystic hull, but I'm yet to do some color inlay and just smooth off the edges a bit (not that they are bad) just some tiny tiny fibers. I have also cut some stuffing tube supports (with the Mystic M logo) but they are a little too big for the very low alignment of the motors, so I have to rework them a bit. Sadly all of this takes a bit of time, specially when you have to redo a few parts. But its definitely coming together nicely.

Hi all, here are some updates. It has been a busy Easter with family and WORK! but this project is really starting to come together. I got all the carbon for the project cut, but also spend some time on the drawing board making little mods here and there. Although we knew exactly what the interior was going to look like, I wanted to create some more details like little "M" logos in all the mounting posts and so on.

Here is what they look like
130537

The supports for the stuffing tube and servo horn were also modified, and some more details was put into the servo plate also.

Getting the posts in was a real PITA, as they had to be slightly elevated (tunnel is V-shaped) but I got there in the end. The servo mount was designed to be a stand alone unit so the boat can run with minimum components, but at the same time be at the right height for the pull-pull system. The top plate is also elevated to cover the ESC's and made in 1.5mm carbon instead of 3mm. With x6 30mm oval shaped mounting plates and M4 stainless stand off's the servo mount should hold up to almost anything.

That's a good question. Since the smaller MGM's has no mounting holes, I figured I can attach a "U" channel from one bracket to the other, so there will be a carbon strip going across the 2 ESC's and mount onto the sides. That part is still on the drawing board but will hopefully work. Its going to be one of those PITA jobs LOL I feel it!

The veneer looks really sharp, these little details are really making the boat fantastic.

The pickups are certainly uber tight. I honestly didn't think you would be able to fit the pickups that far back on the hull. Looks like it was a pain.

Is the maple leaf and Mystic "M" logo on the ESC plate going to get the same red detail like the original design? or leave as is?

Hello,
Everything is now complete and ready for the painters (she's off today) Was getting the inlays ready to glue in and also cut the tear drops for the pickups, and installed the rudder. I ordered a different pull pull system for the rudder, but didn't like the look of it and the way it grinded. Basically going back to the MHZ system with the wires coming out where the rudder attaches. Its actually a much smoother running system. By the time shes comes back from the painters, I should have all the electronics sorted.

Hey Kent, this looks amazing! So inspiring. That water inlet is the cleanest I've ever seen, that's some skill! My question is regarding your hydraulic rudder system... How do you make sure that no water gets into the holes/tubes for the rudder cables? As far as I know, those "feet" have holes in them, then you drill similar holes in the hull, but how do you attach the tubing?

There shouldn't be any problems with water entering the hull, as there will be 2 tubes feeding the wires and they are both above water level. The Hydraulic arms are attached by 2 screws also, and they will be sealed from the inside of the hull. I will have a look for a pic on the first build to show you how I did it.

This was sorta what I could find from the old build. Actually worked amazing with that steering. It don't look 100% scale but it don't look bad either. With a setup like this I would pick performance over looks. Regarding water tight, it was the rudder that was the trouble maker on the other build :)

Oh wait, so those hydraulics are just dummies then and you have a secondary cable system like in that pic? If that's the case, it makes more sense now. I was wondering when the cables actually run through the hydraulic arms.

nata2run
04-20-2015, 02:13 AM
Correct! It's a very stable system that way. They have been modified by some, but I wasn't going to attempt. I just wish MHZ would make a system like HPR

oh LOL too far back, was not sure what you were referring to. What you see is sanding marks, there was a little knot/lump in the gelcoat, so I sanded it down to see if it effected the laminate. It was a gelcoat flaw only. Many of these hulls have either air pockets or other flaws in the gelcoat. Once sanded and painted its all good.

Id love to pimp out my spartan, however i dont feel like a plastic hull will be justifiable for pimping... it does need some serious strength added tho, ultra flemsy. Not sure what to do

Lol, thanks for the compliment. Hard call if it's the best one, I think every boat I've done had something unique to them. I guess because of the size of this hull, it has been the hardest one yet, there is a possibility my fingers are getting bigger too and finding it hard to reach. Some elements of this boat was definitely a challenge and all mouts and templates have been completely redesigned to suit this build

My buddy doesn't know much about r/c boats. Don't hold it against him.

This was a maiden run of a very expensive boat in choppy weather. Wasn't meant to show it off. Just a functional test. I'm not gonna push it yet and risk losing my investment. I have some things that I have to tweak. One of which is to figure out why I lost radio signal at the end of the video.

Expensive yea but the hull was made to withstand high speed crashes... Kevlar inlay there after all ;)

Is the water always this choppy a lot of the time or is it just lately? Is this saltwater or fresh?

I'll get it up to higher speeds, don't you worry!!

Fresh water lake. And no, it's not always this choppy. Just one of those days. Even on most days, at dawn and dusk its always calm. I just took it out in the middle of the day when I had some spare time.
