Hi fellow rc boat enthusiasts, this is my first post here, so I introduce myself shortly: my name is Dirk Jan, I'm from the Netherlands and I am building rc boats for many years now. I especially like to build wooden boats.

I read along for a while now and I think this forum is great. You can find a lot of knowledge and nice boats here.

Time for me to share my latest project with you. I designed my own F1 Tunnel hull, called Cozy F1 Tunnel. It's 23.6 inches long and it will get the following setup:

- Hobbyking/TFL outboard
- 3S 3Ah lipo Turnigy
- 60A Marine esc
- total weight: 3,3 lbs

The cowl I will make myself from glass fabric and epoxy, using a mold.

I designed the hull in Pro/Engineer CAD software:

I make all frames myself by using a hand saw, no laser kit here ;)

The mold is finished:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c281/djcozijnsen/Cozy%20F1%20Tunnel/DSC05769_zpsd01afb42.jpg (http://s29.photobucket.com/user/djcozijnsen/media/Cozy%20F1%20Tunnel/DSC05769_zpsd01afb42.jpg.html)

Applying 4 layers of 110 grams/m^2 glass fabric over the mold to make the cowl:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c281/djcozijnsen/Cozy%20F1%20Tunnel/DSC05775_zpsddd0200f.jpg (http://s29.photobucket.com/user/djcozijnsen/media/Cozy%20F1%20Tunnel/DSC05775_zpsddd0200f.jpg.html)

The cowl came out good:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c281/djcozijnsen/Cozy%20F1%20Tunnel/DSC05777_zps6991c9a1.jpg (http://s29.photobucket.com/user/djcozijnsen/media/Cozy%20F1%20Tunnel/DSC05777_zps6991c9a1.jpg.html)

Applied some base coat:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c281/djcozijnsen/Cozy%20F1%20Tunnel/DSC06010_zpsa9c2196a.jpg (http://s29.photobucket.com/user/djcozijnsen/media/Cozy%20F1%20Tunnel/DSC06010_zpsa9c2196a.jpg.html)

And finished except for the paint!

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c281/djcozijnsen/Cozy%20F1%20Tunnel/IMG_20150214_132523_zpsuvqrbsfy.jpg (http://s29.photobucket.com/user/djcozijnsen/media/Cozy%20F1%20Tunnel/IMG_20150214_132523_zpsuvqrbsfy.jpg.html)

It runs very well. The hull runs nicely above the water and turns very sharp. Top speed is 31.5mph. I'm still experimenting a bit with the setup to improve the performance. But so far I'm happy!

Thanks Thompson :)

I made some progress with the paint job. The paint is almost finished. The mid section of the hull (white part) has to be painted still. Also the cockpit window and some details.

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c281/djcozijnsen/Cozy%20F1%20Tunnel/IMG_20150414_191839_zpszxw03d4i.jpg (http://s29.photobucket.com/user/djcozijnsen/media/Cozy%20F1%20Tunnel/IMG_20150414_191839_zpszxw03d4i.jpg.html)

I made a template for the cockpit window from some thick paper. Just put it on the cowl and mark the outline. Then masking it with some fine line tape.

I painted the mid section of the hull. In these pictures, the real color shows better.

The paint job and decals are finished! I made the decals myself with decal paper. I used this decal paper on my son's bike before with good results.

I just need to apply some clear coats of varnish and then I can hit the water again

Sorry again for the photo quality; my phone shows the colours not as bright as they actually are (see post before). Better pics will follow when I'm going to drive my Cozy F1 again.

@ Thompson: The boat stand took me some hours, but it came out good. It locks the hull in place so it cannot fall off during transport. I still have to add some ropes so I can carry the boat easily.

@ tamelesstgr, it took me about 2 years to build this boat, including some breaks because my busy schedule. Patience is the key to success I guess :)

Ahhaa! That is what the extra pieces of doubled up plywood are for, clever you. I even see your pencil mark indicating the holes to be drilled for the line. I'll make a suggestion, use sailing line, this will look so cool.

Good idea Thompson, I will have a look if I can find these lines somewhere close.

Last couple of days I ran my Cozy F1 a couple of times. The first time with it's colours :)

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c281/djcozijnsen/Cozy%20F1%20Tunnel/150514_CozyF1_1_zpsojuzouvn.jpg (http://s29.photobucket.com/user/djcozijnsen/media/Cozy%20F1%20Tunnel/150514_CozyF1_1_zpsojuzouvn.jpg.html)

Yesterday it was pretty windy. The hull runs very loose in these conditions, which looks very cool This morning the water was almost flat and the hull then runs more 'tame'. I measured a top speed this morning of 33.5 mph

Kick to this topic :)

Last summer I bought 2 different motors and another prop to try some different setups. First I switched the 3000kV outrunner with a 3200kV outrunner for a little higher rpm and it has more output: 500W against 400W for the 3000 kV motor.

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c281/djcozijnsen/Cozy%20F1%20Tunnel/DSC06580_zpsgupqwygj.jpg (http://s29.photobucket.com/user/djcozijnsen/media/Cozy%20F1%20Tunnel/DSC06580_zpsgupqwygj.jpg.html)

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c281/djcozijnsen/Cozy%20F1%20Tunnel/DSC06585_zpsszvmil6s.jpg (http://s29.photobucket.com/user/djcozijnsen/media/Cozy%20F1%20Tunnel/DSC06585_zpsszvmil6s.jpg.html)

The other motor is a 2800kV water cooled outrunner that I want to try with the 35mm prop shown.

The 3200kV motor does improve the performance of the Cozy F1, but it is not a huge difference. Top speed is around 34mph.

...But after only 2 runs with this motor I crashed the Cozy F1 and damaged both sponson tips. I removed the shattered tips and reconstructed them:

Yesterday it was time to run the Cozy F1 again for the first time after the repair. It was very windy yesterday, not perfect for this little hull. I had to be gentle on the throttle, but still I flipped the hull twice. First time it rolled back on its sponsons, but the second time I had to rescue it.

The top speed was 54.4 km/h / 34mph. I will try the other motor/prop combo soon.

This evening I installed the 2800kV outrunner. This motor is twice as heavy as the little outrunner it replaces.

I will try this motor with a Aluminium 35mm prop, shown below together with the brass 33mm prop that comes stock with the HK outboard.

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c281/djcozijnsen/Cozy%20F1%20Tunnel/IMG_20160530_212332589_zpstohliwka.jpg (http://s29.photobucket.com/user/djcozijnsen/media/Cozy%20F1%20Tunnel/IMG_20160530_212332589_zpstohliwka.jpg.html)

I don't like the looks of this outrunner sticking out above the cover. But I'm curious how this setup performs. This week I will test it.

This morning I ran my Cozy F1. I already tried the new setup last week with good results, but I had to sharpen the prop still.

This morning I sharpened it and I took 2 lipo's with me; 1 old one and a brand new one. First I ran with the old lipo. The Cozy F1 ran nicely with the hull floating above the water. The top speed was 35.0mph.
The new lipo improved the performance condsiderably; more punch and a top speed of 37.0mph

Some pictures and a video of today:

This week I took my chemicals, mold and CF laminate to make a carbon fiber cowl. I waxed the mold one more time and applied a PVA releasing wax on top of that.

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c281/djcozijnsen/Cozy%20F1%20Tunnel/IMG_20160607_205140959_zpstfdmdfon.jpg (http://s29.photobucket.com/user/djcozijnsen/media/Cozy%20F1%20Tunnel/IMG_20160607_205140959_zpstfdmdfon.jpg.html)

I use a 200gr/m2 cf cloth. On top of that I apply a glass cloth of 110gr/m2 to make the surface more smooth. This cowl should become 20% lighter than my glassfiber cowl. I will also make another paint/decal design for this cowl.

Thanks for your fast response and also for the link to the plans. I don’t think I can do as good a job building but I’ll definitely give it a shot. The build I saw of yours was impressive. Again thanks

Hi Jan,

I found the blueprint of your cozy F1 at Rumrunner Racing.
Congratulations, a really cool project!
Maybe I'll built this one too. I'm actually redrawing the plan in my 3D-Software.
There are two things which I'm not shure how to built them.
Thing 1:
Your ribs for the sponsons differs with the one in your photos.
In the Blueprints there is a recess, I think for a Stringer 5x5mm. Is this correct?
I think it should look like as in my screenshots.

Thing 2:
I don't know how to place the cowl in the correct position.
Where sits the cutting template in relation to the helling (part45).
Would it be possible to get a 3sides-view-drawing with the cowl?

And one more question. Where sits the center of gravitiy?

Dirk Jan

Hi y.o.r.k.

Nice to see your progress. You are right about the 5x5. I added it to the design later on, to make building them easier.

The front face of the cowl cutting template sits flush with the front face of the cowl centre rib.
CoG sits approx 30% from the back of the sponsons, but depends on many parameters, such as outboard angle, prop, total weight and so on.

By the way, I'm building the successor of the Cozy F1 right now. Bigger size with more modern looks. No drawings available yet. I need to finish it and test it myself first:https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210609/c8dc983044a2b59471f9a748340e7559.jpg

Thanks for the quick response. I tried to position the cowl as you described. Is this correct?
My ribs for the sponsons are a littel bit rounded at the top. This is the only change I did, I think it looks a little bit more modern.
I think/hope your "Cosy F1 Successor" is worth a new thread. I'm looking forward to this.

The bold top of the sponsons might be difficult to realize, as the sponson has a wing-shape length wise. A double radius in 2 directions in the same surface is not possible with a wooden sheet. But you could maybe use many small strains as top skin.

I do have a build topic of the Cozy F1 T800 in Dutch. Language might be difficult, but photos might interest you:
https://www.modelbouwforum.nl/threads/cozy-f1-t800-houtbouw-f1-tunnel.276072/

Thinking about an English build topic. It seems the interest on the forums have been decreased unfortunately.

My Cozy F1 is still going strong. Currently running a 36mm 1.4 pitch prop. The outrunner has to work hard spinning this prop. Rpm and top speed decreased, but cornering is great with this prop.

Last weekend, we ran 2 Cozy F1's head to head.
One with outboard (orange/yellow) and one with inboard setup (Blue/RedBull). Both run a 4S setup, and are very closely matched! It was great fun [emoji16].
