I was there today and ended up running some boats, water was mighty fine the whole time. Also got to meet Chris and Aaron.

All the reeds in your (thomaslambo) avatar pic have been chopped so visibility seemed great also.

Sorry for the delay in posting results.

Tony or myself will make a post this evening with the official FE results so far, but here's a few teasers:

Ralf Moser blew away the T-Mono record at 108 MPH. The most beautiful passes you'll ever see a Mono hull make. I believe Tony got the most recent passes on video.

Chris Flynn broke the P Sport Hydro record, speed was 96 MPH.

Andreas Lehner broke the M2 Cat record, speed was 55 MPH.

Lot's of people knocking on the record doors so stay tuned!!

Disclaimer, please don't hold me to the exact speeds listed above, will verify today

The record was set with a wood/composite outrigger designed and built by Tyler himself. I do not know how many riggers Tyler has built, tested, destroyed etc. in his quest for the top record - but it has been a bunch. For those xxxx who think building a record-breaking SAW boat is just sticking a lot of power in a boat and pulling the trigger..........think again.

Mere words are inadequate to convey the jubilation that accompanies the act of finally besting the former "worlds Fastest FE Boat" record which was last set in 2006. For years, Tyler has hand-built contenders and tried over and over again in spite of thrown prop blades, fractured drivelines, blown motors, esc's, batteries, and horrendously destructive crashes, all the while exhibiting under these circumstances a rare display of positive attitude and sportsmanship.

This time, after Five Days, and at last light, it HAPPENED, and the celebration commenced :rockon2:

Curious as to what kind of a setup it takes to break the record that Tyler got?
I just mean in generial terms. i know there is loads of work, tweaking, failures and success. But what motor and how many cells?

Fluid
11-10-2014, 08:49 PM
Ten S packs, Lehner motor, special ESC, special non-copper prop, very high rpm, special rigger design....you won't get close with all off-the-shelf parts. But neither did the JAGs Team back in 2006. This kind of performance takes special dedication, few even attempt it. And all that ignores the requirement to drive the boat. Just a few degrees off perfect will chop off plenty of mph from the trap times. Not enough run-up means you are still accelerating through the traps. Bottom line - no matter how it looks, it ain't easy buckwheat.

Realize that the record was set ~ 20 minutes after sunset, it was too dark for any high-res video. Heck, it was almost too dark to even drive. Frankly we are lucky to have any video at all......

Edit: Looks like Brian beat me to it. For those who are looking for HD video - but who have never been to a SAW event - I can give you my reason. While I took a lot of video over the 3 days I was there, I would rather watch the record run with an unimpeded view, which BTW was awesome to see. I did look around and saw that there were half a dozen cell phones recording it - which in good light will give HD quality video. But so near to dark, it's low-res or no-res. I'll take low...

Honestly I have Brian Neal to thank the most followed closely by Ralf Moser for the last run to the record. I had made multiple passes at 137mph throughout the week and was hitting a wall for power. Brian Neal was generous enough to loan me an older Schulze 40.160 which is rare as hens teeth and Ralf Moser offered up his SLS Magnum batteries. I put on the smallest stainless prop from Brent Daily and waited till the last minute. The controller and the battery made all the difference! Keep in mind Brian was within 1 mph of the overall record as well and still loaned me a controller. Couldn't ask for a greater bunch of guys to race with!

I can relate and would definitely want to be focused on watching instead of recording, but honestly, resolution has nothing to do with low or bright light. The opening in the lens is what allows too much or not enough light for a good exposure. If I may make a suggestion, for future events, maybe someone can provide a camera on a tripod? No need for anyone to get their feathers ruffled.

Kris Flynn making an attempt with his 100+ MPH P-SPORT Boat!!

THINK about what I just said there... 100+MPH...

I couldn't hear the time, but I think this pass was "only" 98mph or so...

Don't recall what went wrong for the return pass, but Kris ultimately established a new record of 96.xxx MPH...

I can tell you with GREAT CERTAINTY that this setup WILL have a record over 100mph given proper water conditions and a little racing luck. An amazing setup, and a GREAT RACER!!

OH, No... Not even close... I came up with a bit of a motto for the event... Based on the idea of people needing to race/have BIG toys because they might be compensating for a lack of something... I race smaller boats because I don't have to! :cool2:

Honestly... I race what I can afford to be successful with. The $$$ involved in those larger boats is WAY out of my league!

Of course, there IS something to be said about the work and attention to detail required to make a SMALL system go 70+mph... :)

Thanks Chris and all,

It was three years and six hull iterations with lots of help from friends to make it happen. Although SAW racing seems very much like an individual result, it is quite the opposite. I had lots of input and assistance from teammates and friends around the world who contributed. I am still trying to find time to write up some thoughts on the event and recap the effort.

Here is a brief description of the T-hydro and some pics of the boat prior to the event.

The boat is my own design based loosely on the Raptor Rigger by Brian Buaas. The rudder assembly is from Chris Woods running a kitchen knife. The strut is from Lenny Blake at Rum Racing products with special bushings. 3/16" square drive system with flex cable, mostly Octura parts. I machined and broached my own motor couplers to adapt the 8mm shaft to square cable. Motor is a Lehner 22 series Hi-Amp. I will not say what exact wind or length used. Controller is a Schulze 40.160wk and I used a set of SLS V2 Magnum 10S 5Ah lipos. The prop is a stainless recasting from an existing two blade prop (I am not saying which one) that was cut down, profiled and thinned to a reasonable level but not too much so it had some strength. The sponsons are a very simple JAE like design with a flat ride pad (the width and angle I will not say).

This is the 6th iteration of this hull design. The tub and sponsons are legal in Q, S and T classes.

Darin,

Still waiting for Mark and Kim to return from Huntsville.

urbs00007,

I tried running wires but for several reasons they failed often. I went to standard flex cable for reliability. In a flexcable application there is tremendous axial force and torque applied to the cable particularly for a boat that accelerates from 0-140 in several hundred feet. Eliminating the thrust on the cable reduces stress and potential binding. It is also more consistent when the pushing on the strut compared to the motor with the cable wind-up.

RaceMechaniX
12-17-2014, 11:40 PM
Hard to say how much of the difference was the batteries versus the controller. I am sure it was a little of both. Keep in mind I ran the smallest prop I had when I set the record. Earlier in the week I tried four other props with varying pitches and almost all resulted in the same 137mph speeds. I think the old controller and SLS batteries could have pushed one of the higher pitched props to higher speeds. We'll find out at the next event.

The SLS batteries are available from http://www.stefansliposhop.de/ I am not sure if he ships them internationally.
