Super! Your girls are sure to be the life of the party like they were last time you made it up.

Thanks for the "consult" on the FE classes BTW, for someone like me that regularly "lets the magic smoke out", it's much appreciated!

Looks like were going to make it this year. I know you all are already running a bunch of classes but I was surprised not to see P-Limited Hydro. Any chance we can run this class if one of the others fall short?

Fantastic! You're gonna have a great time, not only at the races but "out and about" should you decide to check out the area.

I had one of our club members ask the same thing (I think), is "P-Limited Hydro" different than "P-Limited Sport Hydro"? :confused2:

BTW, we can add any other class you think might be popular, if we get the entries we'll run 'em!

Chilli
05-23-2014, 01:02 PM
P-Limited Sport Hydro's must use sport hydro hulls. P-Limited Hydro can be any hydro hull (rigger, cat, sport hydro) but most of us run riggers. P-Limited Sport Hydros can run in P-Limited Hydro but not vise versa. If you could add a P-Limited Hydro class that would be cool.... or you could just make it P-Limited Rigger since you already have Limited cat, sport hydro and tunnel classes.

Looking forward to coming up. I'm going to try to drag up some other D12 members with me.

The big Five-O eh, what better gift to than to come up to a beautiful park in Canada and race toy boats with your best buds?

We don't separate the LSG classes so up to the IMPBA limit of 36cc is OK.

Howard, For the IMPBA, unless posted in the race flyer it should be any gas motor 36cc max and I didn't see anything in the race details so............but you've got to use canister muffles...

I was teasing about the canister exhaust. Just trying to get an early advantage. Especially since I'm going to be running my D12/13 Spec controllers in the Limited classes.

Speaking of exhaust Terry, was reading the flyer about noise. On gas boats does everyone who run tuned pipes require a muffler? Or are you referring to the nitro boats.

Hey Terry, I'm all signed up. I tried to sign up my son but RC Racing Events wont show him entered for the P-Limited Tunnel class. My guess is the web site won't let you sign up any classes that have parentheses () in them. I believe a dash - is the only symbol you can use in the class list. Ask me how I know. LOL

A few questions. How big is the P-Lim Offshore course? I've never run the FE version and was wondering what kind of run time am I going to need out of my packs.

Also, Do you guys have room for or have you ever run a Open Offshore course?

photohoward1
05-26-2014, 02:33 PM
I would bet the course is set for about 4 minutes. M445 and about 8400 will get you there. You can only pull about 80 amps out of those motors for an endurance race.

Ha, there ya go, learn something every day. It doesn't like asterisks either. Should be good to go now.

For the offshore classes we put a buoy wide (100' or so) between buoy 3 and the clock, you go around 1, 2, 3, then out to the offshore buoy, back to the entrance buoy before 4, make a left then back around 4,5, & 6. I know you usually count laps but it's better for the scoring s/w to assign places for each heat. We ran 6 laps in the past but Pags suggested 12 laps would be closer to 4 mins. so 12 laps it is.

Not sure what an Open Offshore course is?

ps: You're gonna have a blast!

After talking to a few more experienced FE racers we've decided to drop the ESC and "hull and prop mods only" restrictions to our Limited FE classes.

Apparently the 60 amp ESC that comes with many RTR boats fails easily and is usually replaced by a much cheaper 100 amp unit. Also the "hull and prop mods only" can be misconstrued and confusing.

So the only restrictions are:

Stock motors only, 1500/1800/2030 KV.

The stock esc fails if you over prop........... Sooooooo prop down , Now a newbee has no chance of placing in the top three unless every body flips .
sort of cut'n the new guy / gal off at the knees. ...sweet

Jay

It really does not matter.
The motor is the fuse in a stock system.
When you over AMP it (0ver 80 Amp's), the stock motor burns, in turn it then burns the stock ESC.
If you use a little better ESC, - It will not burn up if you hurt the motor.

In turn it cost you less if you blow the fuse (motor)
Therefore there is NO advantage to the person running a little better ESC.

The Motor Is The Fuse -80 AMP. MAX.

Let's not foul the thread with an argument that rears it's ugly head every six month. Nothing positive becomes of it and in the end no one changes their opinion. I travel to the races to meet the good folks on the board and just play by the host club's rules.

I would love to see how my Aquacraft controller does against the competition but I'm starting to have doubts on whether I'm going to be able to attend. I've been waiting three weeks to get a copy of my birth Certificate from the State of New York so I can apply for my passport. I'm now in the zone where I'm going to have to pay the expedited fee and time is running out. I've also rented a non refundable house in Niagara Falls for four days.

Larry,

The idea is to allow the newbee to be competitive . Not to have all the biggest, fastest , latest, new esc and call it fair with some monetary mumbo jumbo (20 bucks) this is not LMT & SCH equipment.... all the experts will just have to prop down .... (I'm sure they now how to do that ). give the new guy a chance maybe they will come back and join the club get more boats then you can run them into the shore with all the ubecs, cap banks, & hobbykings latest gizmo that doesn't work and let them feel the pain of waiting for parts for eight weeks only to find its the wrong part..... LMAO, and then get no response from HK team. Maybe some one can guide them to OSE and help them make the right choices, like you & Pete did for me when I first started. Sorry about the hijack Terry, I'll cut out now.
Cheers, Jay.

I’ve had a few people ask me how this CAN-AM Cup team event works. The goal is to promote fun & friendship between racers of Canada and the USA. Each team will be randomly drawn at the driver’s meeting on Saturday. Each team will consist of 10 racers. The highest scoring boat of each racer will count towards the team’s grand total at the end of the event.

I've been running p-lim classes since their inception and have run everything from the stock controller to a Hydra Ice 240 and the controller has no advantage, thats why I'm back to running the stock controllers in almost all my P-lim setups If I happen to have a blown stock controller I upgrade to a seaking 120 only because they are cheaper than the stock controlles.

A couple questions:

1. Registration says the only cost is class entry $10 per boat and entry into the park... Is there a base entry fee too? I though there was.??

2. What is the format for p-Limited Cat? I understand what P-Limited offshore is but, just checking to see if P-Limited cat is 6 laps only??

3. If there are at least 3 dedicated FE Q-Sport Hydro's I'd like to get into that. As long as these guys don't dump out at the last minute I think I can do this race.

4. How do I get up to the drivers stand and will I have a clear line of sight or is there a ledge right in front of my face at approx. 3 to 4 feet height?

5. Is open mono open to Electric boats? Say my Q-mono that is 40" long???

6. Will Pags bring that nice Andy Brown Prather 240??? It kept the amps down nicely in Q-mono

I still have to discuss it with the GF because she may have made other plans.

After taking a 3rd in Q-Sport in Michigan last week, I'm up for more Q-sport hydro. Haven't got my P-Sport hydro running but, possibly I could toss a P-sport motor into my LSH for Giggles.

So if it's only $10 a boat and park entry fee's, that's pretty cool.

Wow, lotsa questions Ray, I'll do my best:

1. We've kept the entry fees low at $20 1st boat, $10 ea. additional with due regard to the park entry fees of $9/day + $5 ea additional occupant. We will try to negotiate a special "weekend pass" rate for next year to make it easier for families coming to our event. R/C Racing Events is set up to charge the 1st boat entry fee when you register.

2. P Limited Catamaran will be run as a standard 6 lap heat race format.

3. OK.

4. I'm sure there will be plenty of help to get you up the driver's stand. I think the rails are aprox. 2' & 4' high so should be out of your sight line. What did you do at the FE Nats?

5. Yes. FE took it in '12 (Chris Krawczyk) and Nitro last year (Olly Douglas), maybe it's your turn!

6. I'm sure from what I've seen and know of Mr. Pags if you ask him nicely he would. :hug1:

Tell your G/F she will be going to a beautiful park on the south shore of Lake Ontario and can go to the beach, wander around the yacht club or go and have a nice lunch and sip some Chardonnay on the deck at The Landing restaurant while you are having fun playing toy boats with your buddies!

Thank you for your prompt answers to my questions Terry.

Pags will bring most all his props most likely.

4. Well, for the last 2 years I've been spoiled in Michigan. They created a 'perch' in the middle of the drivers stand, I'll try to get pictures. I do not expect this as It's too short of notice and your stand is all extruded aluminum I think. When I raced in London I had to kinda peek under the 4" rail to drive, it's good enough for this year, maybe if I'm in more regular attendance we could make an alteration in future, it's good enough for now.

My GF is my pit girl, she actually thinks this stuff is cool. I'm very lucky to have a woman that can help me hold this, turn that, launch boats and pit for me on the stand. She has her IMPBA (my Family membership) and can toss in all my boats except the 40" mono, it's just too heavy... and the Q-Sport too... It's too fast for her to pit for me on the stand.

Lastly, if Wendy pits for me on the stand and tosses most boats in, does she have to pay her own $20 entry fee??

Thanks for all the answers Terry! Sorry to ask so many questions.

There lies one problem.... I have no Generator.... some coming do have them but, may not be able to share.

Sorry Terry, Looks like I'm not going to be able to attend this year. Sent an application for a birth Certificate to the state of NY over a month ago. Check got cashed three weeks ago but still no paper. Even if I got the certificate Saturday, by the time I could get an appointment for a passport I wouldn't have the three weeks time to process an expedited application. No fees for her to pit, you're a lucky man!

We use 2 x 10' sections of scaffold for our driver's stand, I'm sure one day we'll have our own and will definitely make it more "accessible".

I'm sure someone will have a generator for you to plug into, lots around...

Got to check the finances and decide how many classes I can actually run and still have charge time in between. Thank Larry!

Might just cut it down to 3 boats depending on the flow of heats. It's the opposite of MI, same boats both days, just 7 heats total over 2 days.

I'm just trying to figure out how many classes I can run and still be able to charge in between. I have no idea how much time would be between rounds of heats???

I had it easy in Michigan running only 2 boats a day. The one day I ran 3 in a day I started having to really be constantly ready. One thing Wendy does not want to do is play with battery charging and I can't blame her really, she only has so much pit girl in her and then thats it. She has seen lipos burn up and fire freaks her out... Of course that was only once in London 3 years ago...:hide:

Mike, some of our guys wont show up for the nats in their back yards. Travel to another country? not gonna happen

Ray, if they have the schedule up look at where the FE classes land in the mix. Figure 7 to 10 minutes per heat. If there are more than 8 boats you get multiple flights etc.

If they put all the FE classes together it gets a little tougher IMO.

What a great weekend!

Thanks again to our NLMBC guys and gals for working their tails off to provide a first class event for our guests.

The site improvements made by the park made it easy to get in & out. Even though the wind picked up both days the racing surface stayed flat. A big group had fun at "The Landing" restaurant Saturday night putting their discount coupons to good use.

Tim Kish's brainchild, the "Twin Engine Hydro Challenge", was very popular. As they say on TV "the crowd went wild"! We're looking forward to this class growing in the future.

Randy's "Can-Am Challenge" was another fun twist to the event pitting 10 randomly chosen contestants from the US and Canada against each other. Team Canada nudged out Team USA this year by only 969 points of a possible 20,000 total.

IMPBA D2 racer Jason Green cleaned up not only winning the Oneida Cup with perfect scores in LSG Mono & LSG Rigger but he also won the 50-50 on Sunday and a RTR Aquacraft Motley Crew! Hope you come back to defend the cup next year Jason, we'll be looking to get it back in D1! :P

First off, thank you NLMBC members that worked their butts off to get this organized, setup and done with little or no hiccups.

Next, Pags, you made the right choice via the wife. Although it was a great fun event, your body needs serious TLC after seeing how much pain you were in after Michigan. The hill that was at this venue would have done you (your Knees, etc) in unless you pitted right in front of the drivers stand.

The pond is an excellent place to run, lots of lanes, few if any weeds, great conditions sheltered from any heavy winds but, most times just the right amount of ripple to go real fast.

Next, Thank you, Thank you, Thank you! Bob Steiner. Without your trusty little 800watt genny I would have been unable to charge the whole weekend. You don't even run electric boats but, you had just enough for me to run 3 boats for 2 days. Like I said Bob, I OWE you one BIG time!

I purposely only brought 3 boats because I knew even with power that I would only have "X" amount of time between rounds to charge. Charging at a low level because of the smaller genny (not complaining!) still left me lots of time to socialize but, that's partly because I can not do boat retrieval duty as a NLMBC member because of my disability, sorry.:hide:

I know Jay was somewhat overwhelmed by having to do retrieval duty and trying to run 5 or so boats, not easy but, between rounds there was a good hour or more I'm sure to charge batts, not sure why you had time issues but, I'll try to figure that out another time. I know you had back to back heats and maybe that was a bit over the top, not sure. I do know you are always going to be great competition for me, you are no slouch nor are your boats.

Wendy and I had a great time. I really wish other FE guys that were able to come from the general area could have maybe put down some of their differences in personality or ego or whatever the case was and just come out and run some boats. The more that would have come out the easier retrieval duty gets.

With 3 boats and only 1 set of packs per boat and limited to approx. 500watts to charge from I had much free time in between rounds, like I said about a good hour to socialize and if I were able bodied I could have done a good 1/2 hour of retrieval duty in between rounds. Maybe the retrieval duties could have been scheduled better/differently for electric guys to be able to still get all charging done for those that run more than 3 classes like myself, I'm not sure but, we can look back and see what we can tweak to maybe make it easier yet for the FE guys to run lots of classes and still have time to charge and if you are a member of NLMBC still help with boat retrieval so it works out nice and smoothly, I dunno but, we have to data to go over and try to make improvements where possible.

We need every possible racer to come out to these events otherwise our numbers will fall.

O.k. sorry for the soap box crap...

Many thanks to all the able bodied people that helped me up and down the drivers stand and back up the hill. You guys deserve a medal or something but, all I can say is MUCHOS GRACIAS!!! and I'll try to drop some weight again too...

One of my favorite parts of the weekend was getting to know the guys that came from Quebec. These guys really know their stuff and build some of the most beautiful sport hydros I've seen. You guys may think I'm superman fast but, heck, you were giving me a great run for the money with 1P setups that frankly are very efficiently done, my hats off to all of you guys, Mike Parent and Co. Thank you for coming out, sorry I can't make Ottawa this year because of other obligations but, next year I plan to put it on the list of places to go. That P-Sport PTSS with a Leopard 3674-2200kv motor is a great fit in that hull and it makes me think why the heck do I need 2P for??? More speed, yeah but, hell, that's one extremely efficient boat setup. I do need to think about the future of FE racing open classes and is 2P really needed??? much to think about.

Luc White, you're a blast to have around, always pumping everyone up and putting smiles on everyone's faces, you make a great District Director, thank you for coming out!

The last race of the day was awesome. I forget the class but, they were big fuel Hydros and what a run off between these two guys, the crowd watching was totally blown away with that race that ended in a big round of applause, so it should have.

Thanks again to guys like Terry Keeley, Randy Rapedius, Tim Kish, Al .... (sorry forget yer last name) and all the rest in NLMBC etc that worked very hard to create a great fun weekend of racing at a great place.

I know there were people that could not make it for one reason or another but, you missed a really great get together and I hope you decide to come out next time.

I had the luxury of being able to sleep most of the day yesterday, I was pooped.

My Apologies for things I forget, I'm bad that way.

Cheers, Peace out!

You were busy, that's for sure. After P-Sport hydro having 3 heats in between you would be able to untape, unplug, put on charger 1st set of packs. After p-limited cat same thing if you have a second charger, I think you did. Then you had three back to back classes, that is difficult I can only imagine but, by the time those heats are done so should have the cells for your 1st two classes then there was a break until the next round but, I'm not sure how much time you had.
If it were me after the first round on Saturday and I knew I could not keep up the pace of 5 classes I would have scaled it back and backed out of at least one class like open Mono that is killer for charge time but, that's just me. Again, I'll try to look at the Data from the race with Terry and see what could have been changed or improved to possibly make it easier. Thank you Jay for all your hard work and your always gritty but fun banter.

I'm truly sorry you feel that way, really don't know what to tell you.
I would have loved to run more classes myself( could easily have run six) but I knew I was expected to help out.
Plain and simple if we don't all help out where we can then there will be no race for anyone to come to.
It's just way to much to expect some of the club members to do everything so others can race, don't you think?
If I'm way off here give me a call and lets talk about it or maybe next year drop a couple classes so your not running around so much.

It's a bugger running a race and trying to race too. I limited myself to 3 classes max per day at the nats and my son to just one. Did a bunch or retrieval too. I doubt Ty will be willing to settle for one class a day again. Probably no more kids classes either.

Don't want to speak for Jay but I'm guessing that like me........ there's more to a race than just the laps. Rubbing elbows with a bunch of model boaters is pretty darned satisfying. Maybe next year I'll get to this one. I could bring my race nut job son along too.

So do you guys think you'll host this gig again around the same time next summer?

It was with great pleasure to meet you and talk about the differences in boat setups. The time was all fun and I love your boats. It was nice you brought your son yes? I hope you get some sleep since the race. Much fun running with you and your son and all those that made the drive from Quebec as well as the USA.

My first visit to any RC boat race ever!!!!!!!!! I brought my gang with me and we really enjoyed. It was amazing to see the pace of racing, variety of boats, and good sportsman like conduct. I came to see if this is something I could handle, YUP! Totally.... We're coming back! Thankyou to Terry and Ray, it was a pleasure to chat in the pits and appreciate you taking the time..... Danny

Old thread but I have a question for next years gig.

If a 15 year old comes, does he have to run in the novice class and nothing else?
If he runs in other classes is he therefore not eligible for the novice class?

I have a 15 yo and if he's running just one class I'll have to duct tape him to a stump or something for the bulk of the day.

I don't recall there being an age limit for ANY IMPBA (or NAMBA) class. (I would need to check to be 100% sure)

I think most clubs create a "Novice" class to prevent intimidation, negative perception, and a positive environment for families...

I looked through the IMPBA book and nothing stands out with respect to what you are asking...as far as I can see.

Here's my logic....

If he's a "Novice" then he should run only in that class (not good enough to run with the more "experienced" racers and could end up as a speed bump on the course).

If he runs in other classes than he should not run in "Novice" (as he's good enough already to run with the "experienced" racers) and the real "Novice's " would be out-matched.

Just my opinion though...others may think differently.

If he drives like his father, he should run on a separate pond altogether:laugh:

Ha ha... I agree with John on ALL accounts.... Well said.

No age limit for the regular classes, kids under 17 free for Novice but if entered that's the only class they can run.

We had to move our date slightly to accommodate the Gas Nats in Rochester so see ya'll Aug 8 & 9!

I am going to see what the rest of the MMEU guys are going to do regarding this race. Looking forward to going.

That date might not work for me. They'll have to adjust around ME and MY schedule. hahaha

This was/is on our "to-do" list already. I mentioned it to the gang at our club meeting with hopes that we can get a flock headed to the border. It's fun to get out of your own back yard once in a while.

Thanks for letting us know on the new date. We've already started shuffling our club schedule so that some of us can get up there this summer.
