For that price, it should have a Zenoah.
Another note.. You'd think by now these RTR companies would catch on to a few hardware setups used by experienced model boaters. How is it they are still using inline strudders on their boats? I thought they caught on when the came out with the mystic, and went to an offset rudder over the Geicos strudder.

Otoh, the hull looks nice

I thought they were out already. I think they do have the zenoah in them and electric start and stop.

As per usual, they announced way ahead of when it will actually be "In Stock". Don't ask me to explain that, I can't.

The motor is a CY, I believe. Definitely not a Zenoah. Please don't ask me to explain that either, because I can't. It's what they did. From what I understand, they aren't bad motors, and there they aren't a "one-off".

It does have electric start, tuned pipe, etc. A Zen should bolt in, should that be your inclination. However, the CY motors are being used by the gas guys to race, etc. Here is a starting point for "hop-up" parts: http://www.davesmotors.com/Products/CY-Sikk-Marine-Engine-Parts/

As for the inline rudder... You can't really compare a 29" hull to a 48" hull and think that setups translate. I'll come back to the standard saying relating to this: WATER DOES NOT SCALE. You can't simply "size-up" or "size-down" and think the same thing is going to work. From what I can see from the video... the rudder seems to work fine. Many here would tell you that the rudder in the original MG worked fine as well. I've recently tested a mono with a centered rudder and it also works fine. Not saying I'd race it that way, but the boat turned fine and didn't have any "weirdness" relating to the rudder. The rudder does need to be longer, however, for it to work correctly.

Anyhow, this isn't a race boat anyhow. It's a "basher", which seems to be what people are interested in, and what sells. It looks cool, especially when the background is right... :thumbup1:

Is the background extra or does one come in the box with the boat? That's one way to sell em.

mitchesx

If this were a race boat I'd say that the rudder should be on the right. Should turn in both directions with this setup, and for a sport boater, that's a good thing. The CY motor creates more out of the box HP than the Zen, and up until a couple of years ago, they only made it with two bolts holding the cylinder on. Recently, they upgraded them to four. I'm pretty sure Proboat would have included the four bolt piece. The two bolt motors ran fine, although some believe that they are not as good as the Zen, and when you modified them, the increased RPM caused the bolts to break...

They seem to offer the bare hulls for everything else, so I imagine they would.

The question then becomes, however, for the same money, what other options would there be for something this size?

I guess I'll have to see how nicely laid up this hull is before we go too far down that path.

I may have to get one too, as the hull gets larger, the expense with lipo grows exponentially. Plus, when I go the lake, I see a few gassers and I must admit, it looks fun.
Only thing is I know absolutely nothing with gas engines, not that I know much about FE either. :crying:

I remember when I had just 20 boats. hehe I am literally afraid to do a recount.

I hear ya Darin. It is a huge boat for FE. Lot's of other options for the dough. I already have a great big bare TFL cat that I need to build. At least with the PB you'll know how it runs on fuel and can make some calls that way.

Big boats like this are a massive $$ commitment to do up FE. What other use is there for 10s2p to have just laying around? Then your guessing on a best setup. Charging is a PIA. If you're a race junky you might get to race it two or three times per year. Sucks up about half your car every time you take it anywhere........but they're cool......so we do it. haha

I've seen lots of these big boats with FE power. Pretty impressive. However, it would be hard to beat 30-40 minutes of fairly hassle-free runtime. Expense is the sound. I'll be curious to see how well the electric start holds up and how reliable it is. If it works well, it solves a lot of problems with running something like this.

64suicd
05-13-2014, 10:59 AM
Couldn't agree more darin the electric start is what sold me. Well that and it's a pretty impressive looking boat for a RTR! I had the Losi 5ive 1/5 scale truck and that came with the same motor and never had any issues and was a pretty decent motor and held up really well! Not to mention you really don't need to have any motor mechanic skills to work on them they're fairly s easy to tune! And with all that being said you can't beat 30 to 40 minute run time. And if that wasn't enough just put more gas in it ,don't have to wait to charge! I could run that this truck all day long on a gallon gas!

I got a chance to see this beast in person last weekend at RCX here in Orange County ca. And I have to say it is impressive! Very solid and looks amazing in person! Definitely doesn't look like a RTR boat. Can't wait for them to start shipping (as I preordered one ) getting very impatient. I asked three different people at the Horizon booth when they were expecting them and none of them could give me a set answer ! So I guess my patience will be tested on this one!

No, but they can chew up a rudder blade. And makes it a PITA to remove the flex to grease it.

It is a bit of a pain to grease, but the prop nut/shaft won't allow the prop to get to the rudder in most cases.

Everyone seems to put down the centered rudder, but from my experience thus far, it's biggest negative is the greasing the cable issue. I haven't experienced much in the way of handling issue. Just have to make it a tad longer to get it below the thrust cone.

Definitely LOOKS more "scale"...

I just bought a rockstar 48 yesterday. First gas boat, so much fun. I did the break in yesterday on the first tank by going easy on the engine for half a tank. I couldnt believe how long it went. I went 45 minutes and used a little over half a tank. I was surprised to see how fast it is with the stock motor, and prop.

I will post a video next time I go out. Its a very fun boat, looks awesome, and gets lots of attention on the water. I finally finished the first tank of fuel, and I seriously think I got around 1.5 hours ( a lot of 1/4 throttle, and half throttle to break it in). I'm curious to others that have this boat how you have the strut setup...I feels pretty light in the front. My BJ 29 seems to take rough water better then my Rockstar 48...I actually bought the 48 as I figured it would be much better in rough water.
