old habits die hard. need a stick radio . throttle and steering. fail-safe. minimum 1,000 feet. saw runs. friends with binoculars assisting. long wind-up and gradual deceleration. been searching internet. this is the best i could find so far. I'm on a budget, so if anyone knows of a better unit to fit my needs please chime in. thanks. http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXSNN8&P=7

I have been using that exact unit for several years now. I've had ZERO issues. For best possible range, make sure to get the antenna out of the boat and up. You could even get a longer replacement antenna.

I use the 6EX (http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXPZT8&P=7), it is a little cheaper despite having more channels, possibly because it has less model memories, but new RX are cheaper too despite being fully featured and having 4 more channels which is the reason I went for it, but I think the full forward travel stick is better for fast boats too, as we don't need brakes or reverse we may as well have better precision forwards rather than never using half of the stick travel.

That's interesting Paul. Are you saying that you don't need a "spring return" throttle to fine neutral when arming or calibrating speed controls?

Thanks

I normally use Air ESCs which also saves money as you can normally marinize an air ESC for far less money than the manufacturers charge and the result is often lighter, if indeed they even offer a marine version, but I have used several Marine ESCs with it some it works fine full stick and some it doesn't, then you just need to move the stick to near the middle when calibrating it, my Castle Hydras will accept neutral at about 2/5ths stick so you still get some extra movement but not a lot.

If brand doesn't matter Spektrum stick radios bind to marine rxs no problem, I use a dx6i and mr300 rxs for sailboats.
I have no idea about the actual range but far enough away that I can't see the boat well enough to sail it, and I can orient my sailboats farther away than my electrics, mast sticks up about 4 feet.
