Attention MMEU members. A few MMEU boaters are planning on racing RC cars at Larry's Tuesday night December 17th 2013. Racing starts at 7:00pm. Just because our pond is frozen doesn't mean we have to stop having fun. Come on out.

The culvert was something I want to forget. :crying: Although, I do have to admit, I smurked a little when it happened.

Tony - That's great news. I finally got Freddy out of the house and we went to AMS a couple weeks ago. We took 8be's and his 1/8 truggy (thing is a monster). The track at AMS is huge! Cleanliness was a bit lacking, but we could deal. Ever been in the bathroom there? Yipes!!!! Not sure what latched onto me after I walked out.

12-18-2013, 09:34 PM
So does this mean you are getting a buggy Terry? Spence, Tony, and I were having a blast with them (until I broke mine).

Mike - I'm staying old school for now. Found some parts on ebay. The car is probably older than half the kids that work there, but it was keeping up.

T.S.Davis
12-18-2013, 09:50 PM
I have an RC10 Team buggy I bought in 1991. Aluminum tub.

I also have Big Bear with a solid steel bumper and a beetle body. That's from 1983 maybe. Great big marshmallow tires.

OH! There's a 4 wheel drive buggy from the 80's too. Called the Gallop I think. I have the same car in front wheel drive. Weird to drive.

T.S.Davis
12-18-2013, 09:53 PM
I would like to have a newer buggy just to turn laps with. I can't be racing. I'm like a heroin addict.

What is the car of choice if you want to point and shoot? Do I need 4 wheel drive?

Shooter
12-18-2013, 10:03 PM
Most of the guys run 2wd. Associated B4, Losi 22, and the DEX buggy are pretty popular there.

Sounds like your stuff is as ancient as mine. 80's, 90's. 1991 was the year the Worlds were held over on Metro PKWY. Larry still has the shirt from one of the drivers from Japan!

T.S.Davis
12-19-2013, 07:30 AM

Terry,

You can find some good deals on rolling chassis on www.rctech.net Those guys are buying and selling stuff more often than I/we do...

Look for a used B4.1. They are discontinued since they have the B4.2 out, but I am pretty sure most of the parts are interchangeable...

Look at the losi 22.1 buggys there is alot of them for sale cause of the new 22.2 and the nice thing about the 22's is it can be set up mid motor or rear motor. Even the new in the box 22.1 can be found in $170 range your Slash I am sure would work pretty good with the low cg chassis and the right tires the chassis is aTraxxas part there $40 not a bad price

T.S.Davis
12-19-2013, 09:12 PM
Slash

Hate it. Evil POS. Cars as a bad as boats. They all work. You just have to deal with what ever quirk comes with each one.

Does the Losi allow mid motor right out of the box?

Digging around I noticed there is a kit to convert an Associated B2.2 to mid motor. I also saw a mid motor Schumacher. Sweet looking ride but probably parts would be a bugger to get after I crash it. You know me. I'll probably hit the culvert all the way from Larry's

Glad you chimed in Tony. I only own a couple motors 2s friendly. Can I use a 5000kv motor with the right pinion? One less thing to buy.

It's funny to me................$280 for a boat speedo? Bring it! But spring for a Tekin?......hey ho wait a second that's a lot of dough for a toy.

teetriple
12-19-2013, 09:57 PM
Terry the losi can be mid or rear motor right out of the kit all the parts come with it I think 5000kv motor is going to be to much I am running tekin 17.5 and it's only a 2400kv motor and it rips pretty good

T.S.Davis
12-19-2013, 10:07 PM
haha Maybe I should put a AQ2030 in there.

The Losi might be the cheapest route to spin some laps. I just want something I can point and shoot and maybe work the throttle to keep from exploding it into the wall.

At least with the Losi the parts would be cheapish.

Did you pick up the Traxxas one ? change the shock oil to 30 wt to start set the camber on all four wheels to 1.5 degrees neg set the ride hight to rear drive shafts level and front arms level try a clay tire something like barcodes this should be a good starting point

+1 Get a buggy! It's the F1 of off-road, although a lot of the other classes are catching up in lap times. SC is darn near buggy now with the low CG.

Hey - Does anyone know if Larry's sells wood? Note I said 'sells', not 'has'. Thx.

longballlumber
12-22-2013, 09:33 PM
How much and what size are you looking for???

Larry doesn't have any plywood that I can recall.

Great Lakes Hobby has a very nice ply/blasa selection... however they don't have much beyond that for boats. It's mostly models (plastics), trains, die-cast, and slot cars. https://www.greatlakeshobby.com/

Another great place for what I call "hobby building supplies" is Prop Shop Hobbies. They have a great selection of all building supplies. http://www.propshophobbies.com/Default.asp

If your only looking for Plywood try looking at Michael's Craft store. They have it, but I am not sure they sell the large 12X48 sheets (I simply can't remember).

If you want to order in bulk you can get it shipped to your house from http://www.nationalbalsa.com/Default.asp

I don't own any hard packs but I asked Bob to bring some in for me. I think he has some 5000 hard case's on the shelf.

Turns out the Slash sheared a pin off. First gear inside the case had sheared the pin that keys it's position on the shaft coming into the case. That's on a brushed motor. Not sure how that happens.

Are you all running the stock set ups?

I don't know what others are running. I just want stick time. Our Slash belongs to my son. Those are so awful that he loses interest quick. Hence the mods.

Got me to thinking. Everyone said "get a slash, it will improve your driving".......................really? That's like saying that to get better at driving F1 I should practice with a rusty 1972 Volkswagen POS. Apples and cinder blocks.

Larry's has actual races with classes and evra thang on most Tuesdays.

Anybody know if a set of custom works would fit stock slash rims?

Shooter

Phoenix. Spoata be. Rooms booked. Air fare's paid for. Having a good job and owning a zero overhead small business at the same time has it's perks.

I have a bunch of boats to build too but I don't have the danged things in hand yet. Starting to get a little nervous.

The bottom on the new cat is finally getting close. So many pieces to cut to fit. Takes for everrrrrrrrrrrr. Joining all those compound curves at the nose of the sponsons is a PITA! I finally resorted to using a snake from the 80's I used to use on the board to get the curves close.

Are you getting a buggy too Mike? I'll probably pick up a Castle combo or something. I think my Basic 5000XL will rattle everything to pieces. If I got their 1410/1y I could use it for N2 offshore at the NATS too.

longballlumber
12-30-2013, 09:12 AM
Are you getting a buggy too Mike?

I am having an internal fight with myself. I am trying to convince the inner beast, that I don't have the time or the extra money to start this venture! So far it's a draw....

T.S.Davis
12-30-2013, 09:20 AM
HAHA I totally get that. It's like that for me but the debate is more of a "what for?!?!" kind of thing. Like I need another THING to be doing. Stupid really.

I was just looking on Amain at Tekin 17.5 motor combos. Looks like there is a "club spec" option where the timing isn't adjustable and then for an additional $30 the timing is adjustable. Difference? Like I would know. That combo of course costs more than the buggy.

What a racket this RC hobby is. Larry should start giving away buggies like a drug pusher. First one's free! Oh broke and A-arm did ya? Those are $1300 per side.

T.S.Davis
12-30-2013, 09:26 AM
To add to your struggle.......it is cool to see all the guys in the winter too. They're all pretty good peeps. I don't think we have any DB's in our gang.

I also enjoy watching guys that really can drive do their thing. Having a toy myself gives me an excuse to do that.

Shooter

For stock buggy (the most popular class), they run 17.5's. You'll likely get the doors blown off you if you don't have endbell timing and 'boost' on your esc though. Both are allowed.

OK. Hopefully I can get out of work by 5. If so, I'll see you around 6:30. If I get out late, I'll prob just be a no-show. :(

Good times yesterday at Larry's. Tony and I were duking it out!! Old technology vs. New technology. A lot of turds on the track though (driving backwards, parking in the straightaway, running us over, spinning the tires on my wing, etc....).

I wont be racing anyway but there is a strong chance Ty and I will be able to make it. The 22 with mid engine only takes shorty packs. Bob tracked some GP's down for me. Need to pick those up.

Mike, check with Fred. He was threatening to get one too. In fact he left my house Saturday night with an Associated RC10 from about 1998.

Tom, just get the Tekin. The Viper will only save you about $40. Larry's had both on the shelf. The two were described to me as "very good" and "great". The Tekin being the better of the two.

Are you guys running on dirt or carpet? Mid motor is a carpet configuration but the tires on that 22 are for dirt.

Shooter
01-07-2014, 10:01 PM
lol! Hi Rick. Yeah, I can see how that sounds strange to you! it's a bit of an odd surface. It's almost like a cork?! High bite, smooth. The custom works work very well there. The lower profile side wall helps as well (lowers the CG). We used to run foam tires (and I still think there's hope for them), but they tend to slide when you run off course and into the dust.

rickwess
01-07-2014, 10:33 PM
Interesting. Are you guys running the HRC blocks and shims then on that high traction surface?

How about the springs and shock oil? I found the stiffer the corners, the better it ran on carpet. The stiffest springs TLR makes for the front and rear. 40wt oil in the front and 50wt in the rear.

I thought I saw a link to a 17.5T motor in a previous post. Most I was racing with started with 10.5T then went to 8.5T. We had a double double within 10ft of a 90* corner and you needed the lower turn motor to clear both sets of jumps.

Rick, you're assuming I have any clue what I'm doing. Not so much. LOL

There are two tracks. The little track is carpet.

The big track is a weird thing. It's a rubbery looking mat and then some spots are ABS plastic. Crazy stuff. Looks like guys are just running through the ABS bank off the throttle but I can't tell for sure.

HaHa. The big track sounds interesting. The ABS would be a very low track surface, meant to represent ice.

Nice buggy, Rick. I love the look of those Shumacher staggers on the front.

Back in the day, Larry's was mostly carpet, and foams were the ticket. Some were running as high as 60wt oil front and rear with real firm set-ups (quick response). The jumps were built so you could live with a firm set-up (i.e. angled landing pads, etc...). There were also some tracks with cross-over jumps at different heights. Buggies flying every direction! Needless to say, it was very cool. The guy that used to make those tracks is long gone, unfortunately.

With the current track, most people are running clay set-ups with 30wt oils and let the cars roll thru the corners.

I'm surprised as well. The money put into these buggies would make you cringe when it happens. I was hit head on at speed by a 1/8 scale 4x4 who lost control after a jump and was going the wrong way on the track.
