Dave, Tom and I are going to try to get out for your gig this spring. Sounds like just enough classes to me.

Will there be a cut off on class count?
Will you be using RC Racing Events for sign up?

D. Newland
10-07-2013, 04:43 PM
Pat is working on the RCRACINGEVENTS log in. No cut off on this gig. Just good times. Not that your event won't be a good time.

It would be fantastic to have you guys come out.

PatrickM

The event is registered and up on RCRacingEvents but won't accept entries for some reason. Waiting on an e-mail response from Britton.....

Pat, may be because it's a race in 2014 or it's to far away for registration.

Do you have a separate sign up for each day? There was something tricky about the dates when doing that. Give Fred a call. He's done about every version of an end run route through that site to get it to spit out what's needed.

tjcast

For some reason the program doesn't like numbers as the first characters for a class. Try changing 10th to Tenth. That might do it. I remember having that problem in the past.

PatrickM
10-09-2013, 04:41 PM
Changed the date to one day.... changed 10th to Tenth.... no help. PMed Fred.

Pat I think it's not working because there's no Jersey Skiff class offered
I was thinking that it was because no SoCal FE racers showed up at the Kiwanis District 19 race.....

If enough Skiffs show, I'm sure boss Dave will make room.....

I'll talk to Fred in about 5 minutes to see if he's given it any thought.

Damn you guys... I'm starting to look into the details of trying to make it to this race... Could use the "it's for my Birthday" ticket, since Feb 29th is just around the corner... We'll have to see if I have to hold that one for the Nats in June instead... :)

Mike/others - You will want to fly into Phoenix Sky Harbor.

We have been staying at the Country Inn & Suites. Last year was dissapointing. We are looking next year to stay at the Holiday Inn Express. More North on Scottsdale Road and closer to the nice Resturants and such.

You need to reserve rooms early. Spring Baseball is in the area this time of year along with other sporting events. The Hotels seem to fill up. At least the ones I choose to stay at. I better start looking. It is not really that far away.

You should feel lucky, Pags......
I signed the club up for four accounts on the program website because it wouldn't take me to the next page.... it's one termite ridden piece of code.
Fixed your entries.

D. Newland
10-10-2013, 05:50 PM

I am so missing the big races this year. My youngest is a senior and I promised I would not miss on Show Choir event. I have missed it 3 years running and I can't this year.
The Plus side is next year they are all out of the house!

Can't go to the Nat's either. 25th Anniversary with both my wife and my 50th b-days. Going to Europe for them. (I wish they were all different dates but hey I am from Cleveland and our motto is: "There is always next year!")

DPeterson
10-11-2013, 02:24 PM
Were going to miss ya Howard at both races. The Europe trip is a very good reason to miss along with your families things.

Send us one of those life size pictures of yourself. We will take it with us every where we go. Actually - you better send us a few copies. No telling how they may be treated. :)

10-13-2013, 05:37 PM
Have to be a big freak'n car. I think I may smuggle Fred in a carry on. Have to fold him twice but he's under the weight limit I think.

What about gear on site? We cant just leave it out there so I'm thinking boats jammed in every square inch of space to and from the hotel.

PatrickM
10-13-2013, 06:05 PM
U-Haul may have a solution......

D. Newland
10-13-2013, 11:22 PM
When I fly, here's what it looks like.

I made 2 crates with 36" X 11" X 12" that meet Southwest Airlines checking measurements (free). Boat hulls, Tx, misc crap like tape, towels and tools go in them.

I ground ship chargers, batteries, motors, ESC's.

It's a pain, but once you have your routine down, whatever it may be, it's rather simple. Any gear that you ship gets sent to me. It's waiting for you at your hotel when you fly in.

Ken Haines
10-13-2013, 11:54 PM
Or....
You could drive yourself and all of your
gear to the race using an enclosed trailer.
Near the end of the event simply set it on fire and leave it.
Hopefully a bunch of do gooders will not run to the rescue
and put out the flames......hmmm

Terry we'll rent a minivan, and there shouldn't be that much stuff? a P-mono a Plim mono a small rigger and a small sport hydro? small box of tools and about a dozen batt packs and 2 chargers. I can fit all of that in 1 48x12x24 box and my shipping rates are about 60-70 bucks each way for that size box and 80 lbs.

T.S.Davis
10-14-2013, 10:01 PM

Got the Hotel booked for Sean and I. Will be back at the Country Inn & Suites. Had a bunch of points built up that saved a bunch of dollars. Sorry Terry if I may have led you fellows in a different direction. It was $90 versus $160.

Dave - You can put Dairymasters down for 2 sponsorships.

Airfare on line is a scam. You go on line, look around, get off line and think about it, and then when you go back on line it somehow remembers you and jacks up the rate. Had it happen alot. Going to try to figure it out this time.

A bit of a shift in CD's for 2014. After 9 years, Lenny Blake has decided to plan a trip to Jamaica with his wife on our race weekend!

So, I reached out to Kelly Brooks and Richard Romero and got them on the hook for helping us out with our race. Most of you know Kelly. He's been out of the hobby for a few years now, but will control our antics nicely. Richard is a NAMBA racer from Tucson and calls dang near a majority of our Dist 19 races. He plays a huge role in elevating Dist 19's racing program.

Glad to have both of them on board, but Lenny will be missed.

On site questions? Power, tables, chairs, canopy hiding space?

We're all so winter pasty we look like direct descendants of the stay puff marshmallow man. A wisp of sun and I'll likely burst into flames.

Will there be mid day naps? If I need a liver will we have to go to Mexico to get it? etc etc etc

And whatever Terry tells you about stuff needed,(chairs, tables, canopy space etc.) multiply that by 3 as Fred and I will be coming too and need the same. Thanks.

Tom, are you sure that isn't Gungan? Should come in handy when we take our sub through the core of the planet Naboo. I've been working on the sub all winter.

Boats are packed. Tool box is down sized to a sane size. Need to box up batteries and chargers and I'm ready to ship.

Another one in the books. I haven’t done an official boat count of previous years, but I think this was our biggest event. And, we were missing regulars Howard Tucker, Dan Proulx, Tony Heller, and even Quiet Lee Simonson.

The weather was perfect. Absolutely perfect. And the racing? Damn perfect, too. I can count the number of “mishaps” on 1 hand. Actually only need a few fingers. What a great group of fast and consistent racers!

It’s always great to see new talent enter the hobby and immediately add to the competition, as well as fit right into the mix. Racing hard when they’re on the stand, and helping out retrieve and pit when not. Adrien “Penske” Gambino, from France, is here on a work Visa and is an FE boater in his homeland. He has a P mono that finished all 6 heats (only racer out of 12 to do it) for an overall 4th place and a very nicely build P-ltd Cat, complete with video mounts, in his fleet. And, Ray Presnall has joined us from the car racing scene with a very impressive and tuned Geico cat. He pulled off some very impressive heat wins, and provided some very good pitman assistance throughout the event.

Having the Michigan group here for this event was a treat. I mean, these guys are busy getting the ’14 Nat’s organized, but they took the time to venture out here to race with us. Thanks to Terry Davis, Fred Seiwert and Tom Castellani.

And, Mike Pags gets his own paragraph. What a commitment this guy has been making to our hobby the past few years. He was to come out last year, but a Kid Rock concert in New Orleans got in the way. Fortunately, there was no tour getting in his way for ’14! Though he and I have great racing in any class, P Mono is where we’ve had the strongest rivalry the past few years. This year didn’t disappoint, either.

Doug Peterson was the longest tenured traveler this year, and he again brought along Sean Kewley, who just can’t be stopped with his P and P-Ltd Sport Hydro. Doug built a beautiful 32” German Cat (forget the make), but I found it rather interesting that he skimped out getting a water cooling jacket for the motor. It’s not like Doug to penny pinch like that. I would have given him one.

Leonard Feeback and Don Ast came out to clean everyone’s clock in 1/10th Scale Vintage. Leonard needed 5 heat wins and a 2nd place to take the win to Don’s 4 heat wins and 2 2nd place finishes.

A few observations while scanning over the final heat sheets. P-Ltd Cat, by far, had the highest boat count of our event. 15 entries. Alan Grossman was the only driver to get 6 finishes. Tom Castellani was on his way, but the 6th round got him a DQ for cutting off a driver. In fact, he showed up at our event was a newly scratch built cat that was giving him fits during open water. However, he got it tuned and had a heat win and 4 2nd place finishes for a 3rd place overall. The winning boat was Jim Osborne’s Geico cat with some nicely tuned modifications.

I found some interesting stats for P Offshore and P-Ltd Offshore. Keep in mind we only ran 3 rounds of P Offshore on Friday, and we ran 6 rounds total for P-Ltd Offshore over Sat/Sun. The highest lap count for a single heat of P Offshore was 13 ¼. For P-Ltd Offshore? 13 flat. The average lap count for P Offshore was 8.32. For P-Ltd Offshore? 10.55. For P Offshore, only 1 racer, out of 7, finished all 3 heats. For P-Ltd Offshore, out of 11 racers, 5 finished all 6 rounds.

A special thank you to Kelly Brooks for helping fill in for Lenny Blake this year as CD on Sunday. Kelly was neck-deep in this hobby just a few short years ago and I hope the bug comes back. Also, thank you to Richard Romero from Tucson for helping CD Friday and Saturday.

Thanks to our sponsors, and thanks to the racers that made this event happen! We hope to see you again next year.

Although my results were......poor, I learned a lot about my boats that I can use to make them better for our local series and for the nats. That's kind of the point of the Winter Warm Ups I think. For warming up. Dave mentioned that on day one. Fresh boats with no run time racing against guys that have been running all winter is tough.

I still don't understand all the electronic failures. 3 baked motors on existing combos. Taking an irreplaceable Hydra120 speedo with them. ugh. I checked with the cheese heads and they said they didn't have to prop down for AZ. Hopefully it was just the difference in water density from AZ to MI. PAGS told me to slow my P mono down 17 mph and then it will be competitive. The new Stealth cat needs a bunch more work. Tom's new cat is really close though.

All in all I had a fantastic time. It was great to see old friends and make some new ones. After hours as usual was heaps of fun. I figured out that my back was sore from laughing so much. Hope Jim's wife doesn't think less of us now that she's had more exposure.

All I can say is WOW!!!! what a great event, Dave, you and your guys really did a fantastic job, the organization, the CD'ing the raffles, the lunches, everything was well thought out. The racing was extremely competitive, when you have a field of guys like Dave, Ted, Jim, Doug, Sean, Fred Terry, Tom, etc you have got decades of FE racing experience on the stand in any given heat!!! I personally did not do too well but I know the boats I have are compettitive and a bad motor and a bad prop choice cost me in a couple of classes and a bad driving move cost me in another. I was very impressed with all the driving, lots of guys just laying down solid heats.
I was especially impresssed with Sean, hes been around for a while and is great compettitor but his boats and his driving were just really spot on this weekend. Also Newbie Ray...not really a newbie, he is quite an accomplished car racer who has been bitten by the FE bug, his boat was fast and handled great and looked awesome. He just had a couple of little mishaps that cost him a podium spot.
Dave, you were a gentleman and on fire racing this weekend, we did have a few really good heats, but he clearly outclasses me on the drivers stand, proving it by passing me on the outside in turn 3 in the last P-mono heat!!!! Great job Dave I had a lot of fun in that heat!!!
The CD's were great, Rich was fantastic and it was great to see Kelly Brooks back out at the pond!!! I met him 6 years ago at the Mi cup race and he taught me a lot in those 3 days, we/ve kept in touch but I havent seen him since then, I look forward to him getting back into racing.
the crew of guys to hang out with was amazing, my boys from Mi, Doug and Sean, Ray, Dave, Ted Jim and Tracy Osborne and the list goes on. We went out each night and had a blast, dinners were good but the company was even better, lots of jokes, stories ball breaking and one of the most fun races I've ever been to. Thanks to all who attended and all who organized and helped. This will be on my calendar each year to attend. I think Terry said it best, "If they knew how much fun we have at these races they might make it illegal"

Photographic proof that Pags earned every embroidered stitch of that vest!

Here's a good shot of me and Pags rounding turn 1. With the rooster tails, it's very hard to see the boats clearly from the drivers stand.

Adrien's on board footage has been edited and put to music, but there was a glitch that I think he's trying to work out. We'll get it.

Duh, the thumbnails on my screen are so small, I thought that was your boat when adding the pic. Enough of the Pags/Newland P Mono show! I guess the photographer thought we were photo-worthy.

I knew there was a picture of Fred's P Mono!

We make you retrieve your own boat if you DNF. It adds insult to injury and provides an incentive to work on your setup.

Not really, but yes we do.

They added 10th Scale Modern & Vintage to the regular FE classes at the Tucson District 19 Race in April. I just signed up my Vintage for a total of 1, anybody else out there want to play? :thumbup1:

Cool, they show 9 signups. If we get close and put on a good show, this might become a regular thing.

My boys have most of the footage edits done, but hit a stumbling block when the computer ran out of memory. Wife won't delete stuff to free up memory and wants me to get a new computer for them. I'm thinking the computer just needs more memory.

I've been at a stand-still ever since. But, I'm set to get it done, so will come up with a family solution shortly.

Dude, just get a terra drive. They're a 100 bucks. Back up a bunch of stuff.

Could be a RAM shortage. My computer gives a "not enough memory" message when I'm trying to process RAW pics in Photoshop. Got almost 2tb of blank hard drive, but the system is maxed at 16 gig of RAM.

Finally got the wife to order some memory. We'll see if that does it. She got tired of the quad copter completely disassembled on the dining room table as the boys rig it with a gimbal that needs a download (and no memory to download the download).

Well, my boys have a new laptop. Here's the video! I'm proud of their work. This was the first time filming moving objects with the quad copter. They learned a lot and will have a better filming strategy the next time. Also, their High School Video Productions class came in handy with the editing.

A special thanks to Adrien "Penske" Gambino for putting a lot of his equipment on the water to get some nice shots. His boats handled well with the camera, but he did give up speed and handling for our benefit.

I saw at least a dozen lane violations... LOL (I am kidding)

Way Kewl stuff. I am still at the hovering stage with my helicopters. Maybe someday I can fly like that.

Later,

I could have filled 3:45 with better driving, but that would have been kind of boring. Funny thing is that having a different POV points out things that you may not necessarily see on the drivers stand, or at least not be nearly as concerned about. Also, Adrien's boat was a bit of a marker because of the equipment he was hauling, so there were a few times we drove around him like you would an old lady doing 50 mph in the fast lane on the freeway. However, Ted (High Plains Drifter-West Coast) McKay got busted on camera doing his S turns during the mill!

What was interesting about the quad copter hovering over the race (they filmed about 8 heats), was that it was dang near invisible to the drivers. You couldn't hear it, and it was just high enough to be out of your line of sight. I found myself actually looking for it during a few heats to make sure the boys were flying it well, which they were.

ya he has pitted me before.. I think sometimes he even has a hard time watching his own boat during a race. might explain all the cut markers. LOL
