Starting the Thriftway build by building a jig to keep everything straight and true. Using a frame kit from ML Boatworks. Will post pics as I progress.

Jim,

Let me know when you get close... I may have a power system you might want to try in that... :) Might be a good "proof of concept" hull for my power system idea with PSFEMBC... :)

Going to try to do the decking out of Mahogany also.

Ok Darin I will keep that in mind though this one may take me a while as I want to deck it in mahogany. But i may just deck it in balsa and glass it and then foux paint in the grain. But I have been eanting to do a real mahogany boat for a long time

Got the building Jig done today and I had to wet the frames as I left them out of the box and they warped on me. Going to let them dry out for a while with weight on it to keep them flat. Also ordered the rest of the wood I need for the build and some CA to tack it together.

Looking for recommendations for a motor on this. Going to run it on a single 2s lipo. Prefer a motor that Steve carries.

Looking at the Leopard 2845/4.5 D 3650KV for this build? any comments?

Not sure on the ESC
Also think I am going to use a .098 flex shaft.

Something tells me this is going to be a really nice boat built by a true craftsman!!!

And yes that is a good choice for a powerplant, the only problem I see is packing enough amps or (C) in batts and ESC in there, there ain't much room to play with

It worked fine in this boat as i am only using a single 2s pack and this boat has a taller crown to the deck than the bardabl did
Thanks for the compliment

Jim... that is GORGEOUS!!

Say, let me dig around and see if I have a 10.5T ROAR style brushless motor here. Maybe we can use your boat as a "test bed" for our 2S class idea with the PSFEMBC, since you have it about ready to go...

That is from about 4 years ago Darin no need to look The boat is owned by someone else.

I actually have a large piece of Veneer from re-skinning a sewing machine desk for my wife a few years ago. I am going to cut it into 1/16th scale pieces of 4X8 sheets of plywood.

Nice, Jim I hadnt thought about using veneer...that makes it much easier, use my existing decking as templates...im doing that Miss K + kit that Steve sells here on OSE.. I wanted to jazz it up a bit....Im still debating on what motor im going to end up with, was thinking 2-3S ...I hadnt actually thought about racing it..that would be fun..tks for the info... DJ

Started to fit the transom and decided it was too narrow so I am making a new one that will be .250 inches wider. For now everything is just tacked together with CA

Right on Jim :tiphat:

I like the old school boats, I have a 31" 80's built Miss Notre Same from roger newton plans. I dont run it much cause its 30+ years old, but its fun :tt2:

olwarbirds

nice....Jim, what is the advantage to widening the transom that small (.250) of an amount ? DJ

JimClark
03-10-2014, 01:20 AM
No advantage I just thought looking at plcs of the real boat the transom provided made the sides curve too much so I decided to widen it to lessen the curve

Did a little work today in bending some wood for the stringers. I used an old technique I found for bending wood. You use downey Fabric Softener ( a ratio of 1 part softener to 12 parts boiling water). i have a piece of tube with a cap on it and fill the tube with the solution and put the wood in it to soak for 1 hour. After you can bend the wood to the shape needed. kind of like steaming wood. The stringers are 1/8th thick spruce.

Well worked a little today. Allt he stringers are now on the hull which means it is ready for some decking. I have the two pieces of the bottom glued together and fiberglassed at the break in the hull. Found a potential huge problem. The cowling I have for it is just too big. Only hope of using it is to chop it up in pieces and use the tail section and make the cockpit from Balsa. You will see i the picture that the cockpit aligns with engine bay. That sure pissed me off as I really didn't want to make a one off cowl.
