So this is my first boat and ran it for the first time yesterday. I was amazed by the handling. But I was only getting maybe mid 30's. I was also a little disappointed in the hole shot. I've seen quicker hole shots on Youtube in the stock set up. Mine seems to caviatate a lot for a 1/2 second or so before getting decent bite.

I was planning on trying the upgraded prop but want to wait until I get my Seaking 120 or 180 before I start pushing 100 amps through the stock 60 amp ESC.

What do you guys think? I want to get it into the mid 50's on 4S-5S. I'm not sure it's possible on 4S. What do I need to do for a motor and prop?

Thanks!

What have you done to "tune in" the boat in its current configuration (stock setup)? 55mph out of the box is a difficult task and probably not realistic. The boat was designed for low to mid 40's. Hi 40’s are possible with the right set up and prop. Anything beyond that (Hi 40's) would be beyond the limits of the hull. My suggestion stick with what you have (motor, controller and 4S power) and work on setting up boat and challenge yourself to gain the best speed with the stock motor and controller, you might be surprised how fast you can go...

Haven't done much in the way of tuning per se. Just set the CG back as far as I could with the batteries. I have the GrimRacer L45x68 prop but dont want to run that witht he stock ESC. As it is the stock prop pumps 60+ amps. I fgure I will upgrade the motor with the ESC. I am just debating on whether or not to go with the Seaking 120 or jump to the 180.

Disclaimer.....I am boat and electric stupid. I do have a couple electric helis but primarily I am a giant scale aircraft and turbine guy.

What would you do to the set up for more speed besides moving the CG aft? Take some of the trim tab out?

I could get ~42mph, bone stock + 45x68 prop. Raise the trim tabs a high as possible and angle them as far back as you can get them........they'll touch the transom. My best speed is ~51mph with SK 120A, AQ 2030kv motor and Octura m545. I run it all the time with that ESC/motor combo but lower the prop to an Octura m445. Speed is ~47mph and temps are 105*F.

As you go faster, you'll need to move the CG towards the bow. The front of my battery is just past the front of the hatch opening now.

What batteries are you running?

I think you will see the biggest difference in making a strut adjustment along with changing props. Don't be fooled, the "60 amp" rating on the controller is under rated. However, it's not unbreakable. I can tell you these AquaCraft controllers are capable of 75amps all day long...

The L45X68 will be fine as long as you keep track of your run times (Battery Capacity) and temperature.

Have fun,
Mike

What is the best way to monitor your temps?

I'm running 4S 4400mah 45C Thunder Power.

I've got a couple 2S 5000 mac 30C batteries from Bioenno. I am very impressed with the quality of these. I also ordered 4 Zippy 2S 5000mah 45C. That should cover me up to 300 amps and 450 amps right? I should be able to run the L45x68 with the 2x 30C packs don't you think?

Yes, you will be fine with those batteries and that prop. Just like electric aircraft; your first run should be for a pre-defined amount of time. 2 minutes should work for this set up. After the 2 min is up recharge the battery and see how many mAh’s you put back into the packs. This will allow you to calculate how long your run times should be before bringing the boat back in. Remember to get more life out of your batteries; most recommend that you only use 70% of the stated battery capacity.
Also it would be advised to properly sharpen and balance your prop. Some speed and performance can be gained from that.
