What is the difference?

Inrunner means the rotor(magnet) spins (in)side the windings, outrunner means the magnets are mounted to the can and spins around or (out)side the windings. There are pros and con's to each, the simplest being that you can water cool the can of an inrunner and you cant in an outrunner.

each motor has its pros and cons, with the motors being equal in size and power the outrunner (should) have more Tq inrunnuers (should) have more top end, both are very reliable, but like I said about water cooling make the inrunners better for boating aplications. (Most) planes use outrunners and cars are almost all inrunners.

I am very surprised to see outrunners being used in FE boats. I plan on using an FC3730 outrunner in my FC Daytona build, so we'll see how it performs. I will be evaluating temps, etc. with the outrunner compared to the inrunner. The inrunner on my traxxas spartan reaches around 110F with the water cool metal jacket on.
