View Full Version : 6s from three 2s hard packs

Here's my idea for getting 6s power using the same hard packs I run in my Slash 4x4 truck. I already outfitted my ESC wires with high-current banana plugs with a 90° bend, and fabricated a series jumper, thus eliminating any extra connections. Today, I made another longer jumper to allow a third series pack to be connected. By moving the first two packs back a couple of inches, I am able to achieve the same COG. (don't mind the mismatched C ratings-- I put these packs in the boat just for the photo.) I have not run this configuration yet, but I have the 6s itch. I am waiting for my 50c packs to charge. :D. What do you think?

Lots of connections= lots of potential resistence= lots of potential hotspots=lots of potential wrong connections=potential boom!

Other than that, make sure you prop down to start and check temps after a minute or so on the first fews runs.

6s on the stock esc? Don't do it!

I talked to a guy at Horizon support, and he said they're marketing it as a 6s boat with the 1800kv motor and short prop. He actually told me to 'prop up' if I plan to run 4s. I raised my strut so I'm slipping plenty off the line. If I drive sensibly, is 6s still destined to be a time-bomb?

That a lot of bow weight in there,
And like I said, Those cells and connector are a problem waiting to happen.
Up grade to the 5.5 and less wire would be a good start.
If you have the name of the guy at Horizon support and he will replace what burns up, Go for it.
But dot not forget to video the run.:popcorn2:

This yields the same exact COG as two packs pushed forward, where it ran very nicely on the first two 4s runs. Weight is centered right at the motor mount.

From what I understand, it's the hard throttling off the line and in the turns that cooks ESC's, right?

I'll be sure to mount the keychain camera when I run it.

I dont see a problem with those connectors on a what is considered a low voltage low amp draw setup.....................not running 12s and a Neu 2230. It seemed to work so far, just watch your solders as that is what will get hot first, hopefully you don't have any 'cold' solders.

Is your Villain stock or brushless??

My Villain has a stock brushed drivetrain with an EVX2 truck ESC running on a single 5300 2s lipo in the forward compartment bay. Very light and quick this way. Air-cooled ESC never even gets more than "warm." Motors get hotter than hell. :D

My motor smells a little funny, but it runs strong. I put on my masterfully trued, balanced, thinned, perfected factory prop, and tweaked the COG to where it's hanging on the edge of blowover. Still had some porpoise though. I raised the prop strut another 1/8" and put it back in the water with the packs half-discharged. Porpoise almost completely gone. :) I put the GPS in there with it, and here's what I got. I'm very happy.

Taken from a video clip of a pass, the Doppler average of the audio frequencies from the motor sound suggests that I'm turning between 30,000 and 34,000 rpm.

...a dose of reality for the naysayers whose clever KV calculations suggest the motor can turn over its design limits of 40k on 6s. The motor is always under a load in the real world, and the battery can never really sustain much over 4 volts per cell under load.
