Will a 120a esc do it?

I'm building an apperition cat with a Leo 4074 2200kv and prob an x642 and m445 props with 2x7.4v packs in series 5900mah 60c. I would normaly go for the T180 as I have in my pursuit but its a real tight squeez so I was wondering if a T120 would hold up?

IMHO- The 120 is a bit too small for that set up. Especially with those props. I The minimum I would consider would be a Etti 150 and even then I would be very carefull running anything bigger than a 640.

Chilli is right. That setup will pull over 100 amps regularly and depending on how the boat is driven a typical 120 amp controller (really just 100 amps) will not last long. Get the T-180 and figure out how to fit it in. Is it the height that is the problem?

The T120 will handle the m445 no problem, I ran that setup in my Pursuit without issue. The x642 however, will be pushin it hard................x640 will work.

Yes. The wires come out facing upwards. I think I can get it in but the T120 would look tidier. But if its not going to last long it's pointless getting one to have it blow and end up getting a T180 anyway. I will just have to make it fit ;)

And setup is T120a with added caps, 4074 2200kv with a x646/3.
So far it all runs cool.
And was thinking of propping down to try some 5s pack I have.:unsure:

I blew a etti 150 on a m545 so is recomend a t180 I got one in there

if its the wires on the t-180 that are making it hard, de soldier them from the connector on the esc and then soldier them so that they are laying down, makes it so the heat sink is the highest part on the esc

Nope................the x642 has the same total pitch as an x448. Plus the m445 has been detoungued to let it rev out and slice cleanly thru the water.

The m445 with a T120 is a snoozer, it'll handle it pack after pack..................I wouldnt even hesitate to throw the 642 on it if it were mine............. it would be close on amperage room, but i would still do it. I wont recommend it to another forum member with their own $$ on the line. The m445 or the x640 are perfect for that setup............you can come report back on this thread and tell me I'm a complete idiot if it messes your ESC up:tongue_smilie:...........the disclaimer is that your boat has to be set up right............no 50% cog etc................:Peace_Sign:

edit: add a couple 1000uf 35v caps if you are worried, I have done it on several of mine.

Guys, which T-120 are we talking about? There are at least two, the Turnigy Aquastar 120A and the Turnigy Marine 120A. The Aquastar seems the better of the two, the Marine 120 has been spotty in reliability.

I have to laugh when I read about how one guy ran a certain cheap ESC in a certain setup and it worked fine so he swears by it, then another guy with the same setup burned his ESC up and he swears at it. While there is no way to know for certain, both guys are probably right. The Chinese are notorious for having zero QC on their products. While a Western company will toss out the bottom percentage of units which it knows are bad, the Chinese will sell them all! This is why companies like Castle build and run their own manufacturing facilities in China - so that they have some control over QA/QC. In our example above, the "same" ESC owned by both users were not really the same at all - one was from the top percentage of units while the other was junk to begin with from the bottom percentage of those produced.

The T-180s are apparently so over-designed that even the "bad" ones are good enough, since reports of failures seem far fewer than for most other "cheap" ESCs. Not so with many other ESCs like the low-volt Swordfish for example - my club members have used at least half a dozen of them in sane setups and they all failed. Others say they are great. In this case, getting a good one is simply the luck of the draw....

It's the T120a Marine version, the Aquastar is 'fair' at best and gives folks complete fits trying to set it up.

I have NEVER had a T120 Marine go into pre-mature LVC....................nor has it ever gone to thermal protection mode, You can beat the crap out of the T120 and it will just smile back at you!!
