View Full Version : UL-1 graphics wrap with 3M

I used to be an air brusher and as I don't have time anymore I designed and did this test on my UL-1 and wrapped it with 3M media.
As the speed of these boats aren't too dramatic, I use removable Scotch tape to seal the cowl on all 4's and the graphics have stayed in place.
Never had a blow off, never had a leak, however on a larger/faster boat, I would clear coat over it with PPG in order to use a thicker tape.
I'll be designing something less aggressive yet still interesting and racy once I get the new boat in.

You should consider offering that as a service. A lower cost alternative to having a boat painted.

Thanks for the comments and I have no plan on marketing them at the moment as I'm a fairly busy all the time with larger projects, but, you never know as I might be able to slip a couple in from time to time providing I have what is required (templates).
It is much less expensive than paint, and way less time holding up the machine/boat for cosmetics and the reason I went this route. Took just an hour or so to apply. I have the same on all my jet skis, above and below the water line and they have held up for years in sun, water, even resist gasoline spills. (Haven't tried it with nitro fuel yet but should be ok)
I have clear coated over graphics in the past, so deep in fact that I could cut/polish and feather the edge to invisible so that you couldn't tell where it met the background. (show applications)

The graphics can't be made without outlines, meaning, it required templates taken from all the body panels along with registration marks and reference images to get it all lined up in the computer. That's because I like text or designs to flow into each other.
I use green painters tape for templates, sometimes a couple layers so when I pull them off to stick them onto flat paper for scanning, they don't distort. Not a big issue because the final print is flexible anyways, so can be 'shaped' onto the surface.

So to contradict myself, if there is a large scale boat builder in need of something very unique and time is of the essence, I may be able to help out. Just pm me with your ideas and we can go from there.

I would like to see some of your airbrush work if you have some pics of it. Always enjoy seeing what other people come up with.

I would like to see some of your airbrush work if you have some pics of it. Always enjoy seeing what other people come up with.

I'd have to dig through discs as I haven't brushed in years (but still have some brushes just in case), however did a lot of muraling, faux finish and custom paint using the old Radiance II line... pearls, ghost, polyester metal flake, and so on. Did lots of cutting (frisket) Then one day, long ago, I had some print work done and tried clearing over it. That was in the day when solvent printers were just coming out, so the quality wasn't optimized as it is now.
That said, and not knocking air brush art, there are times when it just has to be done with paint. Been there bro and still appreciate it ;)

On a side note, I recall this huge contraption the industry came out with years back, became the talk with the brushers. It was this setup of air brushes on a giant upright gantry system and paint lines, and they were muraling the sides of tractor trailers through computer input. Didn't last as the other machines came to the front and media was being perfected and manufactured.

Have you got a printer?

I do not personally have a printer but work at a sign shop that does.
Been doing graphics for over 10 years and working with vinyl for over 5.
You can see some of the stuff I have done for boats here:

My website has been down for a while was in process of moving it to a different server and just have not had time to rework and update things.

Thanks for the posts as I hope that FE boating gives me as long and great a joy as doing the graphics.
Some are asking, and honestly didn't intend on selling the graphics as I was just tinkering with the two UL-1's I have here. (his and hers)
She doesn't like the kit I designed for her boat and wants me to do something a bit more gentle (ya, right, Lol)
So I'm posting the other kit and a link to see it in a larger format as the images I post here are reduced and compressed, thus lack the details I like incorporating.

I'll give this kits away if someone covers the postage as it won't fit in a flat envelope and has to be rolled. (first one who PM's me gets it)
There isn't a cut file made for it yet, so cutting will have to be done by hand if you have the coordination.
*This kit would go best on a red boat. If no one has red, but has yellow, I can make a yellow version.
It'll be printed on 3M 'wrap' media. This is the highest quality in a thin easy to contour media currently available.
You will then only need removable Scotch tape to seal the boat up and the graphics will stay perfectly in place as we have been doing it this way for months.

Love your work. Pick whichever kit (if you like) and I'll send it :)

Hey Todd, just finished the print.
Number layer was turned off on the first run, so printed off a second with them in the image. Doh...
Also swapped for blue as it looked better.

Dude.. your work is SO FAR AHEAD OF ANYTHING I HAVE SEEN BEFORE i am having a hard time visualizing what I might want.

Can you whip together something (the darker the theme the better) with some Yellow Black and White and not make it look like a dirty banana.. (that what happens when I try this lol).

I see so much I like my brain is in overload! LOL

Also.. here is what I see guys. This dude is SO passionate about his art its not a matter need.. Its a matter or PASSION!

Fantastic work!

I have a couple ideas already and go by feel most of the time, just need a few short days to get it setup.
If you have a few other elements in mind, let me know, as it's sometimes hard to get into the right groove when the sky is the limit.

Revision on the design.
(Made a version 2 with knife edging and smoke coming from bullet holes.)
Question is, which one looks best?

Guys this is not a FOR SALE AD if you want to get in touch with him about purchasing 1 of his designs/wraps then PM him and discuss details there otherwise I say lets keep this thread open for what it is to show off the awesome designs he produces!
If he is going to start selling them then I would assume we will see it in the Manufacturing section when that time comes if he chooses to start offering them to everyone.......

Just getting back in town and resettled at the computer. Sorry I haven't gotten to a few PMs that are growing in my mail box yet, but will tomorrow after some sleep.
USB3 hub down (heat's a killer).....running on backup USB2 until the new one arrives on 29th, so drives are moving painfully slow as well for cache. If you've ever been there with large files and disc drives, you'll know what a literal drag it can be. Arg.

Off topic, it's just about winter here now and I have LiPos still charged. Wonder if it's safe to take the boat into the cold water (42f) to run them down for storage. Any advice appreciated.

Grimracer
10-26-2012, 09:00 AM
Its OK to run the packs.. just dont run them cold... Make sure they are 70hs or so before you run them.

Grim

RandyatBBY
10-26-2012, 12:24 PM
You also want them to be in the 50% to 60% range for storage. I use RC cars and a EOS to get mine to that point.

11-01-2012, 09:52 PM
Thanks guys.
Q: What is the reason to not run them below 70 degrees F?
Q: What happens if you just leave them full to discharge on their own over time?

Thanks guys.
Q: What is the reason to not run them below 70 degrees F?

They will run a little slower no harm that I know of.

Q: What happens if you just leave them full to discharge on their own over time?

It makes them have a little shorter life span and they do not run as crisp.
