Graupner Arrow conversion.

Heres a couple pics of my arrow conversion from the graupner/steerable outdrive to a 800 with hughey hardware. This was a e-bay purchase as well, it looks like whoever painted it was in kindergarten, lol, so bare with the cosmetics as well as my sloppy building. :D

Started on some of the reinforcment today, I prefer carbon fiber strips the airplane builders use, its fairly cheap (two 3ft strips for $6) and easy to work with, I cut mine with snips and ca them in. The boat is already incredibly stronger, once the cross pieces are tied in, it will be a sherman tank like my EV, at least thats the plan.

lookin good man. Thats the same reinforcment that has to be done to a SH or CESA hull. It ot to be plenty stiff now.

Steering servo/linkage installed, boxed off where tube enters hull and epoxied, decided to section off stern from rest of hull, tired of chasing water around in the bow. Also cut notches in motor can so that I can advance timing if needed.

I wouldnt do it this way with a nicer boat, But in this case I sold the graupner hydrodrive for more than I paid for the whole thing lol. as far as first launch sometime next week, out of CA, Im paralized without it :o

LOL take away my Devcon and I'm powerless also:D. This build has inspired me to go back to my first boat. I am thinking of finding a Kyosho jet stream 800. It's the boat that started it all for me about 10 years ago.

The motor will be held in place with the cross piece, the prop is a X646/3. Ed Hughey sent it to me, I must admit it looks proud back there. lol.

Excuse the pics Ive been sailing with the captain!
At this point deck is attached to hull, this turned out to be quite a treat as the hull had contracted with all the CA usage, it needed to spread back about 3/4" to line up with the deck. Two people and a few layers of skin loss from the zip kicker and its on :D also ran some velcro down the center to hold the 12 cells, trying to keep the weight low and centered at this point. Believe it or not the boat is really close to a 30% cog from the stern. The last real obstacle is finish filling the area where the downward stern tube section was cut from the hull. Its all gravy from here!

Was hoping to do a quick sea trial before a day with mom, got up early to finish off, went to sand off the hobby putty I had put on for the stuffing tube filler ,and it turns out "sandable in 30 minutes" is a little off, in fact it was still goo after 15 hours, if you see this brand run from it!! (in pic) After lots of paper towels and some scrubbing got all that #$%@ off, and replaced with gel epoxy, still needs some more finish sanding, but the boat is real close now, aside from sharpening and balancing my first 3 blade lol.

I got to see Doozies, Arrow run today, that thing has more power than I thought it would have, super fast! using a prather 215 prop he manged to take out a VICTORY 100 amp speed control:eek: , and only on 12 cells! Good job Dooze cant wait to see that thing run when its all dialed in!!!!

Well the first run with the 3 blade, lots of torque roll and lots of porposing! I was concerned the cog was a little forward, this is not going to be an issue. A few more slow passes and the jeti blew up :mad: first time thats ever happened to me! The next day was much more entertaining, propped down to a 215 and put in a 100 amp controller, same issues, torque roll and porposing, so I thought I would just cruise around a little at slower speeds, then it happened, with no warning boat went to full throttle and stuck there :eek: round and round we went completly out of control, I finally got it into a tight circle with the rudder full over and made a plan with jeepers, there was a clump off weeds I thought I could hit, so pulled it out of the circle pattern and flew across the lake into the weeds/brush where it high centered about 8ft in!! still screaming btw, I waded out and retrieved it and disconnected the batts. The controller is fried again with a 215!! :confused:

Hey Doozie, next run out try proping down to X435- X438 that might eliminate the torque roll and the less pith will unload that motor a bit, then maybe step up to a x637 I think this will help out alot. these props should take the amp draw down quit a bit. a 215 is some were between a x640 x642! :D You guys should here this arrow, the 800 just howls!:eek:

Sea Trial #2 attempt tomorrow..
I have replacement esc's in my hand! FE withdrawals shall soon be cured, moved the battery forward 3" and to the left (from stern) 1" also turned motor timing back to stock (i.e. 18) ,for a starting point. :rolleyes:

Was beginning to think the boat had some old german jinx on it until today, finally a couple of good runs, the pic is the battery layout at this point. Lots of tweeking still left to do, but made huge gains today.

Took out another rchydro in about 15 feet, this time it surged briefly, then shorted wide open! AGAIN! this is turning out to be an entertaining feature on these, YeeHaw into the weeds at full throttle. the diode on the motor is blown in two pieces, Im putting this boat in the closet for a while. :o :( :confused: :mad:

I am using that big @$$ brushless motor in my p mono and only turn an M645. how many degrees timing on that motor? try putting it at half of what you have it set at now. :p remember BABY steps:p :D

Your exactly right, this prop must be destroyed, its just so tempting sitting there all polished up :o That was 70 degrees advanced, I know that sounds ridiculous but there is something different about this one, after the 215 run, the brushes were luke warm if that. anyhow Ill play with it after this next race, got to get my 700 boats tweeked up a little.
