With the help of a very very talented member of the boating community, and a couple days (yes, he did this in a few short days!), he took my 2d profile line, and made these awesome cowlings for the GP265, GP310, GP335, and GP400...and when I finish the GP480 gas size we will do one for it as well! With his 3d drawings, we are able to cut out precision molds made from REN board off a CNC 3axis router. These will be perfect in finish and fitment. Should be awesome. The GP310/GP335 mold is being cut this weekend! Enjoy, Mike

Cool stuff! Now apply the same technology for a new state of the art fiberglass hull with more battery capacity and cooler, sleeker lines.:thumbup1:

Wow, and this coming from the guy who runs an FE whiplash with nearly half the room and half the hi speed stability...Yeah, I will think about that...

Its funny Detox, this is not the first time u have mentioned mah ability in these hulls, the 2s gp265 holds 10000mah, gp310 holds 4s 6600mah, same if not more for the gp335, and the gp400 easily handles 8400mah on 6s...Not sure what more u want for me...gp400 in heat trim is running 70mph now with ease round a course....how about you?

mike , if it was me i would extend the scoop on the gp335 and gp310 alittle more forward like the gp400 , ther than that awsome sir:banana:

I just want a better looking boat. I dislike ugly boats. One of these days somebody is going to hit on something really nice. For now I will just stick with my cooler looking Whiplash.

I like building in wood much better you take all the fun out of it with a fiberglass hull

My son has been wanting to build a Whiplash this winter. He's never built a boat before, and after seeing the new cowls has been thinking about one of these instead. Seems like it may be a little easier to build, fit everything in, and setup then the Whips. Might be a nice father son winter project.

Met up with some friends in VA today. Got John Finch to get behind the wheel so I could video this for you guys. I think this might even be the first time John has driven an FE boat! When he got done running, we discussed some things to make it even better. The first thing is getting the rudder on the right side of the transom instead of the left. He felt when the boat blew off in the video it was because he had zero rudder input at the time, where he had been giving it a touch of right rudder during the rest of the running, and the boat lifted the sponson. He felt the right side rudder mounting would help eliminate that. The 10-15mph quartering wind didn't help either! Anyways, the rudder was shortened up today and the boat picked up 5-6mph, so I was very happy about that! Maybe this will help show you what this boat is all about! Enjoy, Mike

Ohhhhh yeahh!!! Cowling molds are being finished! The CNC guy got the GP310/335 mold and the GP400 mold done this morning, and is finishing the GP265 mold later today. Here are pics of the awesomeness!!! BTW, the lines you see in the mold, that is just where the REN board is glued in layers...thats normal. Mike

Looking good!!!!:thumbup1:
Mike,
I'm hitting 57mph with a detongued x452 on a Neu 1521 1.5D using two 5000mah 4s in parallel. The temps are good for a 6 lap heat race but I need more!!! do you have a prop recommendation for me to try? Put me on the list for a new cowl even though I like the original just fine!
Thanks,
Todd

Brushless55

That is so cool!

cybercrxt
10-04-2012, 01:23 PM
Todd, To me the x452 is just not enough on the low KV that is the 1521 1.5D. I want to say I am using an x455, tip cupped, and its in the low 60's right now which should be plenty enough speed for any race if you run the pins!

Clueless1
10-04-2012, 02:59 PM
one more question and no more prop talk...did you detongue the X455? What about lifting prop(1816,1914,1916) I have tried a couple of times a 1916 but can't get the bounce out yet?

cybercrxt
10-04-2012, 03:05 PM
Todd, any talk partaining to help everyone run one of these if perfectly fine dude! Yes, if you are not detounguing the props, you WILL have issues. All sport hydros require tougues removed. I see no reason the ABC props won't be fine. I have a box full of various sizes I need to work on and test on the hulls. If you are getting bounce than you have to much negative in the strut. I found that out last weekend! Put the strut around neutral on a flat board, and make it 1/8" deeper than the the sponson heel depth on a flat board. This should get you around right...the toungues have to go tho on the props! Mike

Clueless1
10-04-2012, 03:23 PM
agreed....all of mine are detongued! I am curious about temps with the X455 but will give one a try! Hurry up and sell me a cowl would ya!!!

cybercrxt
10-04-2012, 03:30 PM
Make sure they are good and thin too. That will help a lot! you can always reduce diameter on the 55mm prop to say 53 or so..this will keep the higher pitch, but reduce the load a little. I am not a prop guy, but this does seem to work! Just do a few laps and check temps with a temp gun. See where to go from there! Another thing I saw, is you are running 10000mah (didn't reread if you are yet, so maybe your not), but that is a lot of weight that may not be needed. I only run 6600mah and get plenty of laps with that much. Might something to consider?

Clueless1
10-04-2012, 03:43 PM
Do you think there's enough room in the Whiplash for 10000mah?

Mike, did you get my email regarding the price of one of these (GP335) shipped to Australia?

The molds look great, can't wait to see the first part pulled from one.

Regarding props, some of the Prather props work well with a 1521/1.5D in a sport hydro, another option. Maybe we should start a thread for ML GP series set-ups? Keep all the info in one place.

I dont know about the email, but i saw your post here and noted it in my spreadsheet. I was going to get up with you when i got the cowl layups started! Talk to you about that soon! Thanks, MikePs-prather props should work as they are similiar to x series!

Molds arrived yesterday, and I started the Seasoning process. Got the 2 coats of Shellac on them to seal up the tiny pores the REN board has, and got 2 of the 10 total mold release coats on. Once the mold release coats are done, I will start working on the layups. Maybe by the weekend I will have some parts to share.

SawEEEEET !!!
One thought, do you think these will be likely to have less pinhole tendency?
I had to fill quite a few in the stock cowl and was hoping that it was something that might be addressed in this line?

cybercrxt
10-10-2012, 09:32 AM
Without vacuum bagging, pinholes will possibly be present. I have gotten better at reducing them, but they happen. Do what Phil T. always recommends, lightweight spackling compound. I rub it all over the part, smearing it into the pores, then I dry sand it once its hard. It hardens quick in the summer. This will rid of any problems. I don't have the knowledge, nor the molds to vacuum bag, nor the money to spend on that setup!

Mike, My brother and I do not get many pin holes in our epoxy cowls. We use MAS epoxy. West systems epoxy left us with all kinds of pin holes.

Batch, haha. You guys think I am a corporation don't you! haha. One and a time, one at a time. I really don't know Jesse, I have kit orders that have been waiting, so once I get caught up, I will let you know. I think I have to lay up about 5 of the 310/335 cowls, 4-5 of the 400, and 3 of the 265 cowls. Mike

Got a little further than I thought I would tonight. Got the GP265 mold fully waxed, and a cowl pulled. Got the GP310/335 mold fully waxed, will try a part tomorrow. Gp400 cowl mold needs about 5 more coats. Enjoy the gp265 cowl! Mike

To everyone with gp310 and gp335 kit or cowl orders, I just want you to know the GP310 kits arrived, the gp335 kits arrived but were short one sheet of parts, so those have been reordered. I am also trying to lay up cowls as I can. My wife heads out of town tomorrow morning, so I plan on working in the shop all weekend trying to catch up on cowling layups! Thanks, Mike
