I'm lookin too, I'm in Old Saybrook, where are you ?

Davinsta

I,m in Derby CT. I found a great place in shelton CT and got permission to run there by the property owner,s son as long as it,s electric only and no fishing this place is about 45 yards wide and maybe 75 to 100 yards long with very calm water.I haven,t run there yet because I'm still waiting for my boat to arrive(pro boat blackjack 29).

Gary

Too bad it was not bigger. I drive right through ansonia/derby to get to my pond aswell .

I,m right off rt 34 near the Yale boat house!

Gary

Why not run on the river? Do you know a spot you can get too? I saw a couple from my waverunner when I was out there.

I'm in Old Saybrook, it's not worth it to me to go to derby , the river is too rough, I'm still waiting on my boat too. I'll let you know if I find a spot

toby,s pond in becon falls ct 45 achre pond and rc friendly.

Gary
09-20-2012, 08:19 PM
Not RC friendly. I have been working on that for almost a year with the town selectman on getting permits for Electric only RC boating. At this time I am the only person who has a short term pass that expires at the end of Sept.

Davinsta

Hey Gary please let me know what,s up ,if you need help whatever, there,s is more strength in numbers! In fact start something in this forum.I called a guy named Rich yesterday about the pond etc but he did not return my call.

Davinsta
09-21-2012, 07:52 AM
I spoke to a state park ranger and he said that all parks in CT are rc friendly as long as your running elec ( no nitro) because I live almost in Osbornedale park an they have a halfway decent size pond for putting in.

Gary
09-30-2012, 04:56 PM
Are you refering to Rich Minnick in Beacon Falls? He is very busy and its very hard to contact him often.

Davinsta

Yes that,s him,I'm still waiting 3 weeks for a reply.

Davinsta

Will you at Toby,s anytime soon?

Whats the story on the lake up in Willimantic? (near williamantic?) I hear there's a club up there. Looks like nothing else soon. We should start a club
in central / centralSouthwest Ct. I'll start looking at the maps
Paul R (Old Saybrook)

Davinsta

Someone told me about a club out of Branford CT called Pond scum boaters but have not made any contact yet.

Davinsta
10-03-2012, 06:44 PM
Finally talked to Rich Today and he gave me the lowdown about Toby,s he said no more permit,s and as long as nobody complain,s about driving close to fishing areas,no gas boats, our just being a jerk,he see,s no problem with it ,but if he gets complaints he will shut it down to rc boats, let,s hope no jerks show up and people can have a great time at Toby,s for a long time to come.Let me know when you will be there since I'm a newbie and need all the help I can get lol.

Gary
10-03-2012, 09:05 PM
Thats interesting news. I am suprised Rich has not emailed me about it. Im not sure how this will work out with the local police. This lake is vert important to me since for now the only lake big enough to run boats over 100mph. I have driven everywhere and the river on 34 seems the next best but water needs to be calm.

Davinsta
10-04-2012, 05:25 PM
I agree i think as long as nobody does any thing stupid or runs a gas or nitro boat and stays away from people that are fishing, picks up there trash etc,we,ll be ok.Let me know the next time your running at toby,s ok.Thanks

10-04-2012, 08:13 PM
I looked at google maps, and couldn't find Toby's, which side of Beacon Falls is it on ?

Davinsta
10-05-2012, 06:48 PM
Ok go rt8 to exit 23also(rt42)exit,take a left off the exit you will pass over a bridge(Toby,s is right under that bridge) take your first right( old pine bridge rd) look straight ahead don,t make the left instead go. Straight under the small train overpass hang a right and your there. In fact I just got back.

Gary

I just came back this morning. Had to wieght forever for the fog to break up. I normally use about 1/10 of a mile that I have measured, start to shut down. I will bw there again sunday very eary. Trying to work out a very pesky problem with the hull not settleing down on the start and crack 100+ at the same time. Almost ready to give up this RC mind drain.

Davinsta
10-06-2012, 02:55 PM

Gary
10-06-2012, 04:23 PM
Boat is pissing me off to no end and tired of spending money on it. Everthing might be on Flea- Bay tonight so who knows....im sure I will get right. LOL By the way Brandford Hobbies in Brandford sells boat and other RC stuff if you guys are in need of anything and he will normally match an internet price aswell. But then again Tower Hobbies and Ebay ALWAYS have what I need.

Gary
10-13-2012, 11:28 AM
No pictures. I go VERY early in the morning so that no one is around and I am back by 8am. My plan is to build another hull that I can have fun with but for now I need the entire front part of lake to make 100+ runs and not kill anybody LOL Thats why I go early.

Davinsta
11-05-2012, 05:06 PM

Gary
11-07-2012, 09:24 PM
Was trying for one last shot but this freaking weather is nuts. The snow might be pretty bad there who knows. I have the boat perfectly dialed in and and hope to run another 100+ so my goal is one last time before she goes away for some clean up and than I start another hull. I want to build a Mini hydro to carry on my Jet ski so I can have some fun on the river.

You guys should try Batterson in Farmington its big. That's where I go most of the time. I live in West Hartford and there's 2 pond that I use some times too. They are great for my little Barbwire but a little small for m bigger boats. So far no complains. Gonna try eastern ct like Mansfield hollow when I can use my Kayaks for rescue. The CT rivers up by Glastonbury is good when its calm if you have a rescue boat.

Gary

Mansfield Hollow has a boat club that actually runs there but I dont have any more info on it.

Well this is a long shot but anyone in the bridgeport area? I5ve thought of a few places:
•Lake Forest, we would have to pay but it seems like a great location about Half a mile long.
•The pond at Sea Side park Pretty small at 350 ft.
•Bridgeport harbor on calm days, about another .5 mile place.
•Space behind miamoque yacht club is a quarter mile.
•Bunnells Pond at Beardsley park is awesome a lot of nitro rc car people around but its very deep and we cant put a retrieval boat in it not even peddle lol. Ive never seen anyone with rc boats there.
•This one is also salt water but its a great spot its Yello Mill Creek, half mile space with good open access. I just got into rc boats and I launched mine there for the first time it was great cant wait to do it again. It is pretty boring by my self though.

We should organize at least 1 test meet to see how it goes.

I have a 18 ft little glastron nothing fancy by any means. Weather doesn't look good today tho man. Very foggy and little chilly. I just got into rc boats like days ago, I bought the 29 miss geico and I have regular nicd batteries. I have two batteries on my boat so we could charge off of one of them. Only thing is I dont know how much draw is on the crazy lipo fancy chargers that people use these days and my outboard doesnt have an alternator.

My days off rotate by one day every week so I wont have the same days off every week. Hopefully we get good weather this week, ill b off on Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday.

Any good spots in hartford? I feel like we would have less restrictions here its slightly less regulated than the valley areas. Besides having to pay at lake forest, pissibly the best one here, and 2nd would be beardsley park but we cant use boats there to retrieve in case of mishaps so its a little scary. Beardsley park always has a few rc people out there.

Dont know prices but ill ask my coworker she is part of the association. I cant see it being more than like 30-50 for the year. Only peddle boats and canoeing/kayaks. Electric boats allowed but I haven't seen one. Every time I go by theres no one there but its gated for the members only.

how would you retrieve boats at the lake

Gary
05-19-2013, 12:13 PM
I am right down the road from bridgeport. I have spent many years on coming up with different retrieval systems and have got it down pretty good. If the boat is close enough I use a tennis ball a on a very short fishing pole, like its only 1.5 feet long so it fits in a bag. Just throw ball over hull and pull her back nice and sloww. If it is to far out I have a Pro boat Black jack that I can iether push it back, put a tow line on it and go around it a couple of times and tow it back or hook it from one of the many tiny screws installed on the hull being towed to hook it and pull it back. Everything fits into a gym bag so I always have it close to me.When our into this hobby as long as I have been you come up with many solutions to every problem you come across. I would actually practice rescues to get good at it. Many a day the boat is upside down than shiney side up!! LOL I have almost $2,000 into my Hydro SAW boat so I will stop at nothing to get it back....Good times............

Hmmmmm...Lets put this in perspective. I can go anywhere and not have a Kayak strapped to my roof. Less work for me,no need to have storage room at my house, No roof rack attached to the car. No need to ever get in the water even if its only my ankles. To me much less work aswell. Complete rescue setup off Ebay 122.49 .Now if I could walk on water... now that would be GREAT !!!!

RIght after spending 450 bucks the retrieval issue came to mind immediately. I was also told by karl at the danbury hobby center to go buy a fishing pole with a drilled golf ball and a buey (sp) at about 1ft from the ball. Got it all at walmart for about 30 bucks.

I really like lake forest hope we can make a meet happen there. Theres even space for about 5 cars give or take. Ill be texting my coworker now for the membership costs.

I would love to try it out ....only have my little tenshock hydro to play with when I go. The boat in the video needs LOTS of room and easy access to retrieve if need be. Im pretty quirky about running that boat. I need DEAD calm water, NO ONE around to bother me and is the reason why I will go at 6:30 am to make a few passes. Way to much time and money to make a mistake. That video is exactly 90mph and boat now is at 104mph. Looking for a solid 105-108.

I ran in salt for many years, had mostly good luck lost a couple of cheap speedos and a motor or 2, but when I satrted getting into the bigger boats, more expensive speedos motors and stuff i stopped, then I went back to the salt water pond one day and 3 drops of salt water cost me 2 Shultz 40-160's ($1500 bucks) that was my last time running in salt water.

Of course profesionalism woud be most important. I ALWAYS respect others around me when boating. Even if I got there first and some one comes along to go fishing I will let them know what I am doing and worst case I move, pain in the ass but whatever. I see it as here you have a nice quiet sunny day and here comes rc boats rippin up the water. Thats also why I will run my SAW boat sometimes 3 times a week at 6:30 am when there is never anyone around to see or complain. there is also hanover pond in meriden same thing noise got us shut down

Gary
05-22-2013, 10:21 AM
Thats what the big problem is. I love the sound of nitro and started with that myself but the noise is wicked and draws way to much attention. I have even told guys running gas boats that we will be thrown out because of them. Electric is noise free practically , no fumes or gas in the water. To me its the only way to go. I go places where noone even knows im there because there is no noise. I dont know about dooleys pond though. As soon as the permits go threw for Tobys pond in Beacon Falls i will let you guys know. Thats where I always run my SAW boat.

is toby's pond busy? if you get permits what would be good times to run (besides sun-up) driving an hour to run and there's a fisherman there is frustrating.

Gary
05-22-2013, 02:44 PM
I here you but that lake is massive so there is always someplace to run. But Igo at 6:30 am mostly mon -friday and I have NEVER seen anyone there. Weekends ....different gota get there early.

ok i just spoke to Shawn from the city of bridgeport's park's department, and i was given an ok for Bunnels Pond at Beardsley Park. His only request was a very understandable one and it was a cordial request of sound judgement on our part, with respect to the area, littering, foul language, and just general public park courtesy.

So i'll most likely try to make it out there very early next wednesday, thursday, friday. I might try to go today at 4pm, but the park will more than likely be full, raining, or too windy.

they mean a way to get the boat back to shore if it stops running in the middle of the pond. what is your plan to get the boat back to shore?

fishing rod with a golf ball lol.

sounds good. ever tried it from 100 yards to boat. an rc boat towing a fishing line might work better. google retrieving rc boats and see what people have come up with.

well I cant say i dont agree with you, however i've never tried it, I've only put the boat in the water once. My original plan was to take it out when I went out with my full size boat but since i mainly use my boat in salt water i dont think its a good idea anymore. I asked the guy at the hobby shop that sold me the rc boat and he gave me idea of fishing rod with a golf ball, he stated he's been doing it that way for over 20 years and that it works every time. So far i havent needed to use it.

I'll be working for the next few days and i know that Beardsley park will be full of people during this holliday weekend but if anyone makes it out there with the boats post videos here and let us know how it went.

Like I posted earlyer... that method works but use a tennis ball because it floats. Or if too far out I will send the rescue boat. Either i will pull a tow line with a tennis ball on it and loop around it or use the home made push bumper and push it back. Never a problem. I keep everything in a gym bag so wherever I am the bag and equipment is with me.

i bought a pretty big size buouey about the same size as the golf ball so that it can stay floating in one spot and i walk side to side to put the line over the boat. i practiced on my pool it seems like it will work, i'd hate to see it not work lol.

the entrance comes from noble ave (top right) follow that road dont go into the zoo (middle of the top part on the picture), park along the parking spots (you'll see them on the left), because it is memorial day it might be packed so if you go you should expect a walk unless they open the parking lots but i havent seen those open in a few years.

I didnt mind the walk. I got lucky and the second parking space was available. The walk is just that I mean to recharge batteries it sucks but I didnt mind it. I found out that my boat is not that fast at all. But I did enjoy it.

Spoke to the park attendants and they said people go there all the time with rc boats. People do actually fish around there. When I asked about the fishing pole the attendant said no problem as well. If you are out of town then yes its 20. For residents its 5 dollars for the season.

Liked it my only problem was that I found out my boat is actually really slow lol. Im afraid to buy the wrong lipos I have a stock miss geico 29 my first rc boat. I hope to be able to go a lot this summer.

Will probably go on Wednesday Thursday and Friday morning to mid day or so possibly.

No not there but I was last there two days ago in the rain and no one was around. I was able to drive all over and find parking elsewhere close to the lake. There is also a lake, Mondos Pond, in Milford behind a school. Its off exit 35 bic Drive, real easy to get to and multiple areas to go to. I stop there every couple days after work. Huge lake aswell.

Yes the 10th. I am building a miss Elam that was trashed. Doing lots of work to it and down to ESC and Motor for it. Right now all I have for that lake is a little Micro Hydro. My Phil Thomas 45 is way to big for it.

Dont forget water levels are very low do to lack of rain so hopefully with what has come down so far it will be much better.Weather looks pretty good for Sunday morning. Gary
06-22-2014, 08:20 PM
Well isn't that just great! Yes that was me in the car...sorry about that. I did not put my boat in the water because my little boats ESC crapped out last night so thats why I was waiting for someone to show up and hit the water, than I would know who you where. I only had my fast boat that can only be used at Toby's pond and all I saw was other people sitting in there car so I left and shot over to Toby's for a bit. I figured since I didnt see anyone it was par for the course. This is the fourth time setting up a run day and so far no one ever shows up so I thought ...oh well just another day. Guess this is a lost cause LOL!!

hi gary, thanks for explaining. didnt want to get my stuff out of the car cause i didnt know where you run from, but anyways that pond is too small from what i saw of it. thought toby's pond was a no go? building new design rigger same running gear as my first one. video on youtube under "rtr daytona fasback." need 100 yards minmum. my cat runs 65, with trimming should see 70. there is a pond in branford off post road. if you go north on 95 and take cedar st exit. go right , down the hill at light take left on rte 1 before you hit next highway on ramp , there was a small furniture store on left. down that road was a pond we ran at years ago. maybe around venice st.
