View Full Version : Turnigy Marine 180 ESC - Reliability Question

I am building my first mono with 6S2P (5000 mAh 6S x 2), Neu Castle 1717-1500kv. It is a Aeromarine Titan 33 hull. Starting with an Octura x448 prop. I have a Turnigy 180 latest version and am planning on using the BEC...

Should I reconsider, or is this a reliable ESC for this setup? My concern is possibly burning something up because of inferior or under-rated components, ultimately costing me more than if I went with the right equipment to begin with.

Thanks

Not sure what it's like on 6s but my 4s setup 2000kv 4074 T180 and a variation between an x645 x642 depending on weather and the T180 works fine for me. You might want to run an rx pack on 6s tho as I know some do.

I wouldn't use internal bec on 6s. Also make sure to seal the seams around the case to make sure its waterproof and add extra caps.

I do not have it with me at the moment, but the new version has a separate dangling bank of 3 or 4 caps attached. Are these OK or should they be replaced with different caps, and how many (link?)?

For my t180 i've made a cap bank with six panasonic fm 1000uf caps.
They have the biggest ripple current.
Remember to take off the bec.
For more i thing Diesel was running tha same setup on an Osprey 41''.

I use the bec on mine all the time on 6s. It is fine. I believe this problem was worked out with the T-180. They also come with an extra cap bank now too.

Rumdog do you ever have any probs with the Seaking or T180 lvc cutting in like so many have had, can i ask what your settings are re auto cells or set manually & what lvc do you set to. Thanks Martin.

Would these work?

You're not going to need extra capacitors. Really, the original esc with only 3 was great. At this point its bullet proof and is compensating for user error with the extra caps.
I never use auto detect. I set it for 6 cells with cutoff at 2.8 v per cell.

Have you had it cut off if you set to 3.4v, i have a Seaking 120a that i run with a Leopard 2860 - 4400kv on 3s in a hydro that the lvc cut in straight away. was set manually 3s & 3.4v 60c cells in new condition. I had to run with no lvc & watch run times, i never tried it at 2.8v though.

From my personal experience, and numerous threads on OSE, The Turnigy/SeaKing ESC - especially the latest one with extra caps - is virtually bullet proof. Your motor, LIPO & ESC choices are on the money. JIM:thumbup1:

PS: It's OK to mix caps of different ratings in parallel.

I ran the Seaking T180 (Turnigy is just hobbyking's private labeling of the excellent Seaking controller) in my P mono for 3 seasons. Although only on 4S, it was flawless. LOVED that controller! I have heard many times, however, if running 6S to disable the BEC and run a receiver pack. I'm surprised to hear the success of some here who still use the BEC on theirs when running 6S. It could be Seaking has made improvements since I bought mine.

I'm glad to hear that too. I'm also still running the older versions and love them as well.

I don't have any experience with the new one as mine is obout 5 years old and still running.

ive got a "new" one and an "old" one, both still work
My only gripe is that you need to fill between the caps with some silastic kinda stuff because i seem to bump them a lot and they move,
ended up using bathroom tile sealant :D

I have been running my T180 with 6S using the internal BEC for about 9 months, and no problems yet.

I bought the T180 about 12 months ago. Certainly some people seem to have had real bad experience with the internal BEC in the past, so who knows?? Maybe they changed the BEC design after they discovered some problems.

As an electronics engineer myself, I am at loss to understand how they can do such a complex multi MOSFET driven 180A PWM drive circuit so successfully, but so many people seem to have had failures of the comparatively simple BEC regulator circuitry that it has somewhat become ingrained that "yee do not use the BEC on a T180 with 6S".

But the BEC has to deliver no more than an amp or two tops, at 5V, to the reciever and servo. That's a real simple bit of circuitry that generates zilch heat using standard switcher technology. Hopefully, whatever the problem was, they have now fixed it. I guess time will tell.

The new version delivers 5v on the exit of bec?

Timely thread, I am just purchasing a q-hydro (whip) and planning to run 6s2p with a neu 1527 1y and was wondering whether the new t180 can handle it. I currently am running three of the escs's two older, one newer in 4s setup's with NO failures. One of them is about 2 years old now. So, sounds like it might be worth giving it a go at 6s with the bec being used? Just looking for some confirmation from others who are running this type of set up today.

This is great feedback. A big 'Thank You!' to all contributors. Gives me some confidence I am on the right track.

Specs actually state 5.8V @ 3A

Someone mentioned sealing around where the case separates. Is this a common practice?

I replace the gasket with rtv silicone gasket.
