I know we already have a gallery thread (http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1327096) going over on RC Groups but, since we now have the ability to run multiple threads within our club area thought I’d start another one here for the non RCG users. All the old vids will still be on RCG and I’ll still be updating that one as well.

That said here’s our 1st run from today. A LSO heat that didn’t go a full 4 minutes with the wind conditions and chop. I think 7 boats started this heat. Winner determined by “last man standing” rules.

Next up, Scott’s HPR and my DF Explorer cat in a PTD run. The DF cat really doesn’t much like the wind and chop either. Think I might have completed 3 laps before it was upside down.

Ray and Hugh go at it in a little 1/8 scale hydro action. (or maybe it was NASCAR considering the “rubbing is racing” effect) :w00t: The bigger boats were not affected as much as the smaller ones but you can still hear the chop as these big boats bang through it.

Not sure if it was the rough water conditions, or if Scott’s GPS has gotten stingy. Finally got a GPS readout for the Delta Force Explorer twin on 6s and was really disappointed with the reading. Sure looked faster than that to me. (and everybody else that that was there watching).

Scott’s HPR Cat with Brian’s DF Cat and my DF Cat in a P class twins heat. This time I did at least manage to keep the props in the water for the duration.

Larry, Chris and myself in a P mono heat. I got a good start and was 1st into the 1st turn but hit a hole in the water coming out the back side. That dropped me to last but at least it stayed right side up and I got to finish. That’s better than what happened to Chris when his steering stopped working.

Another LSO heat. This one in two installments (or maybe it’s 2 heats in one video) with another last man standing finish.

Typical Ackerman winter time running today. Wind coming from the NNE at around 15-20 mph. (such fun)
A little open water practice. Started shooting Brian’s Motley Crew because I was liking the way it was hopping the waves, then Hugh came out with his 1/8 scale hydro and before it was over, Scott had his Miss Geico in the mix.

Hugh, Richard and myself playing at Q Offshore. Days like today it becomes a real offshore race. If you watch closely starting around the 45 second mark you will see my sprintcat turn into a submarine for a couple of seconds. It goes under at the 48 second mark, Hugh’s sprintcat cat comes across where mine went down, then mine comes back to the surface at 51 the second mark. Kind of an invisible lead change since Hugh was halfway around the turn by the time mine surfaced. Try as I might, just couldn’t regain the distance and wound up flipping a lap or so later while trying.

Brian, Richard & Scott running the dreaded STD’s. Really not a good day for small boats but they sure did put in the effort. Scott discovers the secret submarine maneuver at the 43 second mark. Rich barrel rolls around 1:06 but his cat lands on it’s feet and keeps going. Brian goes belly up at 1:38

Don't know why the thumbnail isn't working on the last one. Something is taking up the space it should be occupying. Sometime I think this board just doesn't like me. :crying:

Another round of STD with just Scott & Brian. Definitely not a good day for small boats.

P Twins. Brian went upside down early, I did the submarine maneuver at 1:01 but came back up right side up. Scott got too eager to lap me and wound up upside down at 1:34. We sent out the recovery boat for mine shortly after the 2:50 mark. Did I mention this was not a good day for small boats?

A handful of us (Hugh, Chris, Ted and I) went out to Encore RV park today as BG’s guest to check the lake for possible use as a running site for New Years day. We do like the big lake at Ackerman but thought it might be nice to turn it into a cookout to celebrate the new year. Bad side of Ackerman is that we’d have to transport in a grill and there are no “facilities” in the event of a call from mother nature.

That said here’s today’s 1st clip. Hugh’s mean machine LSO running with Brian’s tenshock cat. Wait… where is the chop? :confused2: This doesn’t look right. I’m scared. :scared::tt2:

Hugh with his whip and Chris with his stealth for some LSH action. I was really wishing I had brought a boat but my even being there was an afterthought after my flying buddy wimped out on me this morning due to the breeze. Needless to say I didn’t have anything prepped to run and no packs charged. Probably just as well. Water that smooth can promote running too long and melting the solder joints on the motor to esc. Right Chris?

A handful of us did New Years Day at Encore RV Park today. A grill to do lunch and bathrooms made it a good choice for spending a day of playing boats and bs’ing with friends. The mirror like lake was a little scary though.
Didn’t get a lot of video (compared to how many runs we did) but we did have a good time, ate some good food and came home really tired.
1st up is Dan’s (eagle) big mono with Castle 2028. This boat still needs a bit of setup work done to it.

BG, Hugh, Larry & Scott do LSO although it was just ran as an oval since we were missing a course marker after the LSH run. When a fast moving hydro punches an inflatable ski pylon the marker loses. :w00t:

Scott and myself running the “dreaded STD” class (even if mine is “illegal”). This was the 1st outing of my Mean Machine twin with Tacon 3674 1700kv motors. I think it needs a “barn door” for a rudder. 1st full throttle down the straight and crank the wheel to the right. It keeps going straight. Panic and let off the throttle. Hard hook. After a few laps I did figure out it would corner at speed, just not at WOT. It still needs a wider rudder though.

That’s it for video taken today. I did snap a few stills though. One or two of them show just how glassy the lake was when no boats were churning it up.

01/08/12 It was an unusual weather conditions day for Ackerman today. Just a touch of breeze and water that was almost a mirror like Encore was on the 1st.

Seemed like the demons were really after me today. Between that flip, my little hydro submarining then popping back up at the right time to get cut in half by Chris (an exageration but.... pretty accurate too) then me spinning the MM out right in front of you. I was not having a good day. Oh... and there was the launch of my SC off the back of "new guy" Bill's H&M cat in our 1st round of Q. Luckily for me that OSM wasn't captured by the camera.

As always quite welcome. And a thanks to both you and Chris for this little production.
Here’s the 1st outing on my Promise Hobby Falcon cat. The video has some subtitles so it’s fairly descriptive. I’ll just add that after the final section of the run that the hottest thing was the caps on the esc at 155*. Second were the motor and battery bullets at around 145 motor at 137.
I think I need to add a little more positive to the strut angle or possibly move the cg back a little. I’d prefer to do it with strut adjustment though. I like my cats around the 35% mark. Overall I’m happy with it’s 1st outing.

Last one today is my Promise Hobby Falcon Cat. Bottom of strut raised to 1/4” above the sponson bottoms. Prop changed to a back cut and detongued X460, still running 9s 2p. I’m guessing around 65 in the straights with this setup but still can’t make a full noise corner with it. I kind of lost track of laps and only ran 5 instead of 6. At least everything inside was still nice n cool. Hottest items were motor bullets at 125. The motor itself was like 113.

A few of us went to Ackerman even if it was windy. This is a run on my old 54" Expresscraft Arapaho after re-fitting it with a Leopard 5692 1000kv motor, Turnigy 180 esc and running 6s 2p.
Started out with a X452/3 prop just to play it safe and it barely got it on plane. After running a few laps changed over to a X455/3 and it made a noticeable difference. Still no speed demon but the detune did get rid of the nasty chone walk it had when it had the CC 2028 in it running 9s 2p

More testing on my Promise Hobbies Falcon cat after removing about 1/2 of the skeg below the prop line. It did improve the handling in the corners but it still wants to dig a little. Time to remove the rest of the skeg and see what that does for it. On the plus side it did handle the chop from the 10-15 mph wind very well.
Hey Ray... I think that odometer reading on the GPS might have been right after all. Count the laps. (That might explain the 130 degree reading on the motor too.) :w00t:

It was not a good start of the morning as it rained pretty good about 15 minutes after getting boats set up on tables to prep for running. I was really surprised how much water mine took on with the hatches on but not taped. :Sinking: After the rain passed it was actually a nice day until about noon when the wind really picked up.

1st run is my just finished Titan 33. Not exactly what I'd call a success. It cornered pretty well but was a terror on the straights with chine walk and literally jumping out of the water on occadion. It's a GoPro vid so bear with it.

Starting to get the Falcon cat straightened out. Removing the rest of the skeg helped the cornering a lot. I was still taking it easy on the east (right) side of the course as theat's where the winds were hitting the hardest. It would handle the west end at pretty much full noise though. The cut down Prather S270 added a few mph to it as well.

Winds today were varied, 10-20 moh from the ESE. Not a small boat kind of day but most of us junkies were in bad need of a fix so we ran our test n tune anyways. Yes there were "Small craft advisories" on the local news for the gulf waters. Other than the wind it was a beautiful day in the park.

Yes, it was a bit crowded today. Scott and I just talked about this at length an hour or so ago and we need to get a grip on the situation before it gets too out of control. I would like to see safety and crowd control concerns/issues handled before the next heat race day on April 29th.

I agree. Looks like HD has 4'x100' lengths of the fence for about $25.00. Not bad at all. Posts are just under $5. each... Id imagine one every 10' would work, 50' down each side, thats 6 posts per side, so if my math is correct, for under $100. we can get the materials.

Ackerman was a bit "challenging" today. By the time we started running at 10:.00 the the winds were around 15 and gusting higher from the NE (worst possible direction.)
When the first handful of us arrived at 8 to put up the newly aquired safety netting there was not much breeze at. There was even one of the guys from SRQ flying a PBY from east side of of the lake. I grabbed the video camera and shot some of his flight. (lost him a couple of times due to the trees where we were standing and when he went right over my head).

Think I found the issue with the video quality.
Here's a insert from page 47 of the manual

On bright days or when recording very bright scenes, despite the iris being at its smallest aperture, blurring of the image may occur. If this happens, using the ND filter should remove this problem.
Turn the ND filter on by pressing the ND FILTER ON/OFF button.

ND is shown continuously in the display while the ND filter is turned on.– ND ON flashes in the display to advise you to switch the ND filter on. (However it does notappear in the Manual mode or during exposure lock.)– ND ON with the “ON” flashing advises you to fit an external ND filter* or that the lightconditions are still too bright, despite having switched the ND filter on.– ND OFF with the “OFF” flashing warns you that the ND filter is no longer suitable for the currentconditions. If this warning appears, turn the ND filter off by pressing the ND FILTER ON/OFFbutton again.* When you don’t have an external ND filter, make the shutter speed faster in Tv mode or open theaperture in Av mode.
Notes:

You cannot turn the ND filter on/off during exposure lock or while the PHOTO button is pressedhalfway down.

The camcorder retains your selection if you turn the standby lever to LOCK. However, it resets tothe OFF setting if you slide the POWER switch to OFF.

End paste
Best I recall it was flashing ND ON the whole time I was shooting with it. I thought it was telling me it was on but what it was really saying was to turn it on.

I was driving in that round too Hugh. Chris told me at the lake that he thought he was shooting, but when he hit the button to stop recording is when the little red light in the viewfinder turned on. There's a real short clip of my SC about the time it was coming to a stop at the steps and that was it.

Thanks Chris, Scott & Brian. Chances are it's not a 1st but it's for sure something different and new for our group. If I could figure out how to add some lightweight flotation it's would look really cool to actually chase the boats over the water (after adding the FPV). As it is I'm a little scared to put it over the water as it would sink like a rock if it hit it. :sinking-guy:

Air Pillow packing material?

Would definately be light but, with the sharp edges of the frame doubt it it would survive any inpact and still stay inflated. The best bet would be not to tempt fate as even if it didn't sink the water would most likely kill the electronics. (I'd rather not have to replace the Naza) Pool noodles might even work but really don't want to try a float test to see. Waterproofing all the electronics would probably add a lot of weight too.

The Futaba receiver finally quit in my Falcon Cat today. It would still operate the rudder servo but the esc would not arm. I had a spare Tactic rx in my box so bound it to one of my Tactic radios and let the Falcon show it's still "King of the pond" in rough choppy water.

I kind of wonder if the rx had been messing with the esc for a while now. I had propped down to a X457/3 and it looked faster than the 460/3 did. I didn't have the GPS in the boat though so we'll never know.

Wind was definitely worse today at Ackerman than it was at Watt Fest yesterday. It was all I could do to hold position with the quad today and a couple of times thought I had lost it.

If you listen around the 1:15 mark you can hear the motors spinning up as I was pitching forward and applying more throttle into it to keep it from blowing down to the roofing company's parking lot.
In the meanwhile I did at least get a little boat footage. Got a nice close up of the park bench I almost put it into trying to get back on the ground too. :scared:

Yeah, I missed getting that one. Don't remember exactly what I was doing at the time it was running. Is that a true Pursuit hull or is it one of the FC "Bling Rocket's"? I'm getting ready to build myself another P mono after the little incident that happened later in the day. I had a lead over Larry when my DF33 took a bad hop off a wave and hooked right in front of Larry's boat. His didn't take much damage but it caved in the side of the DF and knocked the hatch off it. Luckily the hull was still right side up and I made a bee line for the shore with it so nothing inside got water damaged. I'm not going to try to repair the hull though. Hey, I have a perfectly good DF 33 hatch to sell at our swap meet next Sunday if anybody needs one.

Thanks Shawn. Glad you are enjoying our vids.

tiqueman
11-12-2012, 09:25 AM
No worreis Bill. There wll be plenty of other times.

Its the Pursuit I bought about 2 years ago. Same boat I used to race against you in P mono... And same boat I ran when you and Chris were here at the house when we ran in the rain. But the Bling is the EXACT same hull made by the same manufacturer. I have A white Bling here as well that will be going at the swap but its ARTR so not worth it if you have all the hardware from your current damaged boat that has Speedmaster stuff.
IMO the DF is a better handling hull in the corners, from what Ive seen. The Pursuit/ Bling hooks a lot. You really have to be gentle with it in the corners. Id go DF again, but its your call.

Jeff testing his spec tunnel. This was another moment or two of semi calm water.

Second one has finished uploading.
A round of Limited Spec Offshore. I'm really not sure of who was running in this one. Too many green Geico's. Just look at how smooth that water was.

Geicos in LSO heat one were Rich, Lawson and me. Im the orange tipped who escaped the carnage at both the start of the race and at 1:20

Dave test running the Titan 33 that I pawned off on him after getting aggravated with it. Maybe I should have tried some trim tabs before giving up.

A 6s run with my Cheetah. Caught some serious air on the 4th lap that wound up putting a few stress cracks in the hatch from the landing. Guess I'll have to add a layer of CF to it.

Yeah I was thinking that was running very well today. I only caught a small bit of the run but it looked good....

I love the slow mo how it sounds like Larrys "Whoa!" is extremely delayed

You'll find some slow mo in several of them that I shot today. Had to have some instant replay to see what happened.

Last one today. I had to play with the quad just a little today so used it to shoot Ray and Larry in a P Hydro (rigger) vs P Sport Hydro run. At full screen it looks pretty good on my local computer.
