Hi All,
Got some RC experiance with planes, but new to boats. I bought a spartan (don't throw rocks) where I did some basic mods but I could really use some help / recommendations.. I am going to buy a impulse 31 for my son. It would be great to get it over 50 mph and if it could use the same spartan batteries that would be convenient (turnigy 5000 40c 3s x2 = 6s. If this is a bad idea I can buy batteries if I have to. Just tell me why... So after reading here I see I may need a speed controller and motor, aftermarket cooler jacket, prop, maybe some adjustable tabs.

Can someone recommend specific known parts that I can buy that has been proven to work to get me to 50, or 50+ mph please. remember I am new on boats and my plane builds came with motors, etc, ... so it would be really helpful with specific names and parts.

It would be great if his boat would beat mine, as I have a spartan with a 442 prop (dont know who makes this) aftermarket cooler, twin pair of stock adjustable tabs, and boored out the rudder hole a bit,and tee'ed the water lines so the motor gets cold water instead of preheated water from the speed controller. As you can see I can do the work, I just dont understand the parts, ratios for props, 2 or 4 pole, 1500, 1800 2100 t, m, s's etc. It would be great if someone would share a known build to meet these goals.

I have my Impulse with a Leopard 4074 2200kv motor and seaking 180 esc running on 4s. Currently using a m447 prop and she has no problem running with a Spartan on 6s. Temps are pretty cool in here so it helps with the big prop. I would suggest using a dual water feed and for certain upgrade the flexshaft and the coupler to start with. Also upgrading the trim tabs would be beneficial.
To run with 6s you will be limited to 1500-1600kv ranged motors. 4 pole motors are much more efficient than 2 pole.

Well I have a Pursuit 32" mono running mid 50s on 4s2p with a m645 on a Leopard 4074 2200kv and a seaking 180. Gets kinda hot with that m645, I switch between it and a m445. Runs on rails. There are a few different direction's you could go. I would personally stick around the 1400-1500kv range, 1600kv is getting a little high in unloaded rpm's imho. Some guys run the seaking 180s on 6s, I personally don't ever run esc's to there max voltage so I go to HV esc's when running 6s,that's just me. I am sure people will mention it to though. I am a big 5s guy, to me that is the best happy medium for me. I can easily switch between 4s & 5s and I don't need to get into the HV esc's which add more cost. The cheapest HV esc is only 80amps so that's really limiting. You don't want to get overly aggressive in motors and propping because you don't want to go to a 2p setup. On a 1p setup propping is gonna be key. Here's a few combo's:

1) Leopard 4074 1400kv, Swordfish 240HV
2) Leopard 3674 1400kv, Seaking 80HV
3) Keda 4074 1391kv, Swordfish 240hv

Like I mentioned above I am a big 5s fan:
1) Leopard 3674 1700kv, Seaking 180 or Swordfish 200
2) Leopard 4074 1800kv, Seaking 180 or Swordfish 200
3) Keda 4074 1828kv, Seaking 180 or Swordfish 200

* the swordfishes are good esc's just very water sensitive, I actually waterproof mine, and haven't ran into any issues. Dis-able the bec and run a rx pack above 4s. JMHO

Once again propping is gonna be key on all those motors, with just 1p setup you will have to be careful to make sure your batteries can supply enough amps.

I've had a Spartan and I'm currently running a impulse. The impulse is much easier to set up to go fast and even though its smaller its still much more stable at speed. I'm running a cc1515 2200kv m445 on 4s2p sky lipos and it runs in the low fifties for ten minutes and the motor is never over 90deg nor is the esc. The sky lipos I'm running are 4400mah 40c and are only $38. Lovin the sky lipos.

Sounds like a great setup. I'm digging the skylipos myself. I haven't tied them yet in boating, but they are working amazing in my planes. I like them more then the blue lipos. I have some 6s blue lipos that are doing good, but I think ill get better performance with either the sky's or gens aces.

I have yet to puff one but it may be more due to running 2p. Either way they just keep getting better in terms of run time and speed.

I would run (2) 3s packs in series for 6s, seaking 180 esc and a leopard 1400kv 4074 motor. With a m445, speed should be very close to what you want and a very reliable setup.
