Jay-Great shots!

Some quick highlights...

P-Offshore. Very fast racing on a tight course. Ted McKay was very consistent with his Cyberstorm, but it seemed that Peterson's Titan had the speed. A DNF late in 1 round cost him the win. I got 3 solid rounds in to take the class.

P-Sport Hydro. Hats of to Jim Osborne, who put together an Insane (set up for P-Ltd) and got 3 solid finishes to win the class! I guess he's watched race long enough to know how important consistency is...ending that one in a preposition.

P-Ltd Mono. What a complete blast! 2 full heats, sometimes running 7 boats. Zero carnage. Many different types of boats running, from Delta 25's to Cyberstorms to No-Steps to Jet Joppers. I forgot to look at the final points, but I think Peterson got this one with a very fast boat...I just can't remember what he ran..?? It's bigger than my Delta 26 and we had one of the best heats in my recent memory, with me ending up on my lid at lap 5.5. It was tight and full of getting a visual of your boat through anothers roostertail in the back stretch.

P-Ltd Hydro. For the 3rd race in a row, Howard's rigger is going home as a bag of parts...He and Proulx got tangled up, and that was the only carnage all day. Proulx's Raptor rigger was fast, but I think the flightyness got him in round 2. Pete's JAE is very fast, but he had issues getting started, but finished on my ass in 2 heats. I was able to get 3 strong finishes for the win.

Sat/Sun: P-Ltd OPC, P mono, LSH, P-Ltd Offshore, 1/10th scale and Jersey Skiff! Tony's so excited he leaked a little in his shorts that Skiff's are running.

Looks like a ton of fun.

I really appreciate the photos of the PEOPLE involved in the event. Seems we focus a lot on the boats. Turning the camera on the PEOPLE and personalities involved in this hobby might help break down they mystery a little bit and perhaps let others realize that we are all just normal people... (well... we're actually all CRAZY, but normal in the sense of being humans... ).

Hello stonerracing,

Pictures look really great. I saw the JetChopper30 (http://forums.offshoreelectrics.com/showthread.php?29334-JetChopper30-mono-deep-v-hull-FRP-GLOW-OR-ELECTRIC&p=361917#post361917) mono hull in the background of some picture. I made it. It was the first made item and the first present in a race. Hope to see how it is in the action.

Happy rc boat racing,

Quick notes about Saturday.

P-Ltd Offshore. Some very good driving today. Nobody is running away with it, so we'll see what tomorrow brings (3 more rounds for all classes that ran today). Howard Tucker continues being very consistent, as does Kim McKay!

OPC. Proulx is undefeated with his 295. Man, it's a sweet running tunnel. Pete W has one as well, and they both can run! Pete just needs to watch for dead boats...it's the second year he's hit Peterson's dead boat...

LSH. Peterson is undefeated with his Whip. It's smooooooth. Howard and I are trying to challenge, but I just end my heats saying, "I've got nothin'". We're seeing much better racing and consistent racing over P-Sport from yesterday. Sean Cordova is still tweaking his Whip, and he later did some open water with his Q sport hydro. Davis, you guys need to square off one of these days.

P Mono. Holy crap. There are some great running boats. 3 Titans, including Kelly Brooks "Budweiser" Titan that is now owned by Dave Zelinka, is barely on top right now. Peterson and I are on his tail point-wise, also with Titans, and Ted McKay is right there with his Cyberstorm. The speed and handling these guys are getting w/these hulls is impressive. The best heat I watched was between teammates Dave Z and Pete W, Titan vs Cyberstorm, with Dave's Budweiser hull flying around the course. Pete spent 5 laps chasing him, then Dave spun out. Pete dang near gets the lead, but Dave holds off for the win by a boat length.

Jersey Skiff. My mistake, I should have advised that it was 1/6" Scale JS, as Dick Roberts pulled the tarp off his his gas Jersey Skiff that he converted to electric! He went up against Tony and Pat and it was a site to see. Tony was actually holding him off for a number of laps. Dick ended up with catastrophic ESC failure, so Tony and Pat had the rest of the day to themselves without the big bully turning the course.

1/10th Scale. Running good! Dick's Circus Circus is beautiful and we're working right now to get Leonard back on track for tomorrow. He forgot his Tx charge chord.

We ended today just after 3:00, so we had a relaxing afternoon with a little open water and a lot of jabbering, then a nice steak dinner!

We'll do it all again tomorrow.

BTW: Mr. Carnage... best wreck: Howard Tucker I think I won that last year with the same boat. Peterson had just as much damage but his was because of shipping not racing!
Had a great time as usual. Thanks Dave and the rest of the Guys.

Highlights For Me. 2nd in P spec Mono. I wish I could beat Doug but I will take 2nd to one of the best.
P spec offshore (LSO) Placing 3rd. It took 6 consistent rounds to just to place 3rd.

Stupid things this weekend or Bad decisions. Racing for 1st in my last LSH heat and blowing off. If I would have placed 2nd I would have placed 2nd over-all with a points tie with
Newland but he would have won the tie breaker. Being to aggressive i and trying to run the buoys tight in P-spec-hydro and wrecking my boat for the 3rd year in a row. (Same Boat BTW).

I also do not recommend the Motel 6. Cheap but a bit scary. Treated myself to a first class seat home with the Money saved though. Not all bad.

Reinvigorated my FE addiction. Thanks again.

Hi Darin,

I ran an Impulse31 here that I got used (without motor or esc) from here on OSE forum. I put a UL-1 motor in it. I got it a week before the race. The day after I got it I put a M545 prop on it and GPSd it at 41.0mph, but I lost the prop and shaft out of the coupler later that day. I am new to the hobby (5 months) and this was only the second time I had ever raced. The boat performed great! The driver - well, not so much. I only finished 3 races lol! But, I LOVE THIS BOAT! It was competitive and I actually was winning a heat for two laps before I lost control. I ran a CNC X444 during the races. Afterwards, I put my GPS in it and it was running 38.9MPH. WHen I get everything tuned and have the right prop on it, I think I can compete quite well in P-LTD Mono with it. Thanks for the great design.

Fantastic doesn’t even come close to describing the racing we had this weekend! The water was fast, the sun was shining and the fried chicken is still stickin’ to my fingers!

We run 6 rounds of the most popular FE classes over the weekend. 3 rounds each day. It really helps you get intimate with your setups so you’re ready for the racing season and we’ve got the schedule down to a science. Coffee and donuts in the morning, race all day, tear down with a cold one in hand, have dinner with the group, then repeat.

P-Ltd Offshore. It was amazing to see so many drivers get into a rhythm in this class, and it takes so much concentration to make a good heat. Tony Heller was the only one running a cat and his goal was to just turn laps and he did very well. Kim McKay, same thing. She turned laps with the best of them. Unfortunately, I didn’t locktite the set screw on her collet, and it wiggled loose twice, stopping her in her tracks. It was a complete bummer as she was on pace for a podium finish, too. Many…no, all of the guys there were thoroughly impressed with her driving and composure on the race course.

To give you an idea of the competition, Howard Tucker ran 6 solid rounds without 1 mistake, and it only netted him 3rd place with 64 ¼ laps. 2nd place was Pete Wijatyk with 66 ½ laps, and I was able to turn 68 ¼ laps for 1st place. All 3 top boats were Cyberstorms, too, so hats off to Delta Force for making a solid performing boat.

P-Ltd OPC. There were 3 ML 295’s at our event, and that is one impressive running tunnel. Dan Proulx just built his and our race was the first time he had it on the water. You would have never known it, either. It was fast, stable and almost as silent as Red October’s caterpillar propulsion system. He got a perfect 2400 points! Pete Wijatyk was able to hang on for 2nd place after a little DQ incident in round 1. And Dave Zelinka pulled off a 3rd place finish with his VS-1.

LSH: Yet another no B.S. class! There was nothing Sean Cordova, Dan Proulx or I could do to get into Doug Peterson’s head. He took his Whip and whipped up on all of us, getting a perfect 2400 points. He just would not accept the rope we were giving him to hang himself. Sean showed up this year with a brand new Whip as well, and it has a ton of potential once he tunes it a bit more. I was able to hold on to 2nd place, and Proulx took 3rd. Howard may have benefited if he would have looked at the point totals before the 6th round, because he may have changed his race strategy. But, that’s always a crap shoot. Do you really want to know what all you need to do is get 2nd place in the 6th round to podium…??

P Mono: it was great to see 3 Titan’s entered this year. It’s my personal favorite, and I was stoked to learn that Dave Zelinka rebuilt Pete Boyle’s/Kelly Brooks’ Budweiser Titan so it can get back on the race circuit. Doug Peterson also has a very nice Titan build. Tony Heller and Dick Roberts are running Insane 34’s, and they are also a top notch performer, right up there with the Titan’s and Cyberstorms that were driven by Ted McKay and Pete Wijatyk. Dave Z had Saturday locked down with 3 solid finishes, while the rest of us were trying to recover from a DNF. But, Sunday was a different day! Peterson and I had our sites set on Dave, (and each other…) and Dave Z appeared to have his race strategy well organized. I don’t like changing race setups mid-race, but I needed to do something for Sunday. My Saturday runs were good, but Peterson would pull me at turn 1 even with me on the inside and I couldn’t get back to his rooster tail until lap 4 or 5 5 and only because he was peddling. I was running my Hyperion 25C packs that I bought for the ’09 Winter Warmups, making this the start of the 4th season for those packs. They held well during P-Offshore on Friday, but the punch just wasn’t there. So, 45C packs and a slight prop change awaited Peterson early morning on Sunday. We milled as we did on Saturday, him allowing me lane 1. But, this time my boat hit ludicrous speed in turn 1 and it was finally me that had 10 lengths on him by the center of the back stretch.
Throughout the day, DNF’s started to take their toll on Doug and Dave Z. That allowed Ted McKay and Pete Wijatyk, with their Cyberstorms, to get into the podium hunt. Once the dust settled, I was sitting in 1st place with 1925 pts, Ted McKay in 2nd with 1519 pts and Pete in 3rd with 1475 pts. Hats off to Dick Roberts and his Insane 34 as he ended up in 4th place with 1400 pts. The boat runs very well and Dick still has what it takes to lay down a terrific P mono heat.

1/10th Scale: There are some great shots that Jay took of the 1/10th scales going around the course. They are fun to watch and a little bit challenging to get going counter-clockwise around our course. Leonard Feeback was having multiple motor issues on Saturday, but he got his setup figured out and started to clean everyone’s clock. But, his DNF damage from Saturday was too much to overcome and Dick Roberts was consistent enough to get 1st place with 1450 pts and Gary Rose too 2nd with 1275 points.

Crackerbox: We were short a boat on Saturday, so they didn’t run until Sunday. Dick Roberts again pulls a 1st place with 1500 pts. Gary Rose was 2nd with 725 pts and Kim McKay had a somewhat borrowed boat that just wasn’t acting right, so 3rd place is what she was able to lock down with 250 pts.

Jersey Skiff: The comedy class of the event. Tony Heller has been on the forums for a number of months now beating the Skiff drum, and I could tell that he didn’t sleep the night before racing due to his excitement. I made the mistake of not specifying “1/6th Scale Jersey Skiff” on the race flyer, so Dick took advantage of that and showed up with a gas-sized Skiff, complete with a Neu 2215 motor running 10S. It made Tony and Pat McDonald’s skiffs look like bath toys. Well, Tony was doing a great job holding off the big boat in the first heat, but Dick got the heat 1 win. During heat 2, the magic smoke came out of Dicks boat, smoking through the scale vents and all. Pat and Tony then ended up the weekend with some nice heats, trying to figure out how, if possible, to control these boats around the course. But, as out of control as they seem to be, they each only had 1 DNF out of 6 rounds. Tony took 1st place with 1750 pts, and Pat was 2nd with 1725 pts.

I hope you enjoyed the write ups, photos and videos of our event, and a very special thank you to Jay Stone for providing most of the documentation for our event! Please come back next year! Thank you to Lenny Blake, Jay Stone and Leonard Feeback for handling CD duties. Trust me, as much fun as it looks like we were having in the photos/videos, times that by 10.

More of the same will be happening at the 2012 FE Nationals, to be held at Legg Lake June 19th-23rd. Some of the best drivers in the country, including many top gas/nitro drivers from NAMBA District 19 that now have FE boats in their fleet, will be there. Make the commitment. I promise you won’t regret it. If there is anything you need or any questions you have, please contact me. I will do anything within my power to make that event happen for you.

A little commentary. This is P-Sport Hydro on Friday, but only a few were running open motors. Most had UL-1's.

This is a heat where Ted (red boat) and I (orange boat) had a great start. Both UL-1 powered. One of these days he's going to fire me as his crew chief.

This is great video of P-Ltd mono. That is Dan Proulx's Delta 26 that is screaming down the course, but he had some DNF trouble. The red boat is Howards Cyberstorm. It's great to see the performance difference between these two boats, but it comes with a risk! I also ran my Delta 26 and had 2 wins and a DNF...I was deck to deck with Peterson when it happened and I don't quite know if it's because I was running a smaller boat or not. We were inches from each other going down the backstretch when it happened. I've got some thinking to do before June.

P-Mono Heat. Dave SMOKIN" ; Pete got a late start but was driving like he stole it to catch up; Dick had the big power but drove a conservative race.

I would like to personally thank Dan and Pete for making the ps295's look so good this weekend! CONGRATULATIONS GUYS! I hope you are enjoying them as much as I enjoy building them. Who had the 3rd 295? Does anyone know how they faired? Mike Luszcz, www.ml-boatworks.com

With seven classes entered and being genetically driving impaired compared to the enormous talent present, I really looked forward to the JS race. Pat and I had the 1/6 scale 32" boats, similarly rigged with AQ 1800KV motors. First heat we waited on the driver's stand for Dick, and at the last second him and Gary trundled a Queen Mary sized gas JS to the water. Since there's no official "JS Class", Dick dropped a 2215 Nue in his gas skiff (complete with an exhaust pipe for the politically correct Hybrid look) and we were off. Dick's boat was running at about the same speed as ours, maybe a litle more. Jersey Skiffs have a mind of their own, and I had two cut buoys in the first heat and took third. Second heat I got a first, and lost a servo in the third. Dick's monster caught the speedy on fire, and sat on the shoreline with smoke pouring out of the vents. (No, Pat and I didn't smile and wink at each other, I'm pretty sure ). I took two more firsts, and a second to win the class. Pat and I had a great deal of fun; his boat had more prop than mine but had some typical Jersey Skiff handling-itus.

In this heat I spun out in turn two on the mill, Pat got the start and like a good little boy I followed him inside the buoy on turn one for our penalties. He spun on turn two and I held the lead for the win.

My lord, What prop is Dan Proulx running! That thing was balistic! Must be nice to get that kind of calm water out there. Its gotten to the point you have to expect 5-10" waves, and 10-20mph winds!

You can see in Round 2 Heat B of tunnels Pete Wijatyk pulling my Cobra in the backstretch with his 295. He just bobbled the turn. Also, I was driving around 2 OPC's that were mated together, doing donuts in turn 1.

Dan and I had the same lap times, but he did it in Cadillac comfort. It's a very confident running boat.

Here's a shot of Pat and Dick's Jersey Skiffs, and Pat's bathroom buggy. It's an electric converted ATV, and worthy of another thread. It's awesome. He had to dial down the electronic ESC so he didn't have to keep changing is underwear.

Im My defense , I built the " Queen Mary " as a joke and to have 3 entries to make a class so Pat and Tony could race there skiffs .
I had a used AM skiff I planned to race in Dist races. I had the lipos and a Good Schulze comtroller, and a 2215 1.5Y. It was about a week before the event I entered and started the build . On tues before the race the Schulze was dead . The only HV esc I had was very cheap with small wires .
I tried to run it on 7 cells and a X447 but the caps were at 167 deg after 3 small laps . I tried an X445 and was still 147 deg.
Thats the way I raced it . We kept it hidden till the race was called up.I'm supprised it ran as good as it did on a X445 on such a big hull .
It was great fun.
This my 5th WW race. I always have a great time . Thanks Dave , Lenny , Howard , Jay . Fun Event . And the guys who come out from the frozen north .

Thanks to all the Arizona guy's for a great time and race as usual. This race remains my number one favorite. The talent level at this race is second to none.

Terry - I tried to put on more of a show with some stupid driving but I must be getting just a little better. If my rigger would have survived the shipping I may have been able to provided a good show - although it probably would have been in the carnage catagory.

Doby - The sun is much brighter in Arizona than at London, hence the sun visor direction.

Learned some good things this trip. Got to pack better - damaged rigger and tunnel. Hyperion chargers really do not like sun light. I knew that but this time I actually had one smoke. Learned that my P-limited mono can handle much more prop in sprint and offshore. YaHoo! Also learned that my P-Offshore boat can handle much more prop, but next time check all hardware for proper postioning after shipping. Thats whats so cool about this sport - you keep learning - even if it is the hard way.

Good times - Doug

Doug... I've found that out the hard way a couple of times too... though haven't had one actually smoke... I now cover the chargers with a light hand-towel to protect the displays from the sun.

Sounds like you guys had a great time. Hopefully you can all make the trip out to LA in June as well.

Hey Darrin.
I have had the displays go out before too. They always would come back. I had this one covered while charging. I plugged it in after cooling it off. I heard the beeps etc but no display. After doing this a couple times it blew smoke. When I get it back home I will open it to see what really happened. I had trouble with chargers all weekend. Unclean electrical current or maybe my bulldog.

The L.A. Nats are weighing on me real heavy. I have no travel partner but do have a possible room mate. Problem is we have so many venues now in the Midwest I may be pushing my luck with family, time and finances.

Later - Doug

That's all folks.. Great weekend, truly enjoyed meeting some great electric racers. After 20 years of running nitro and a few now running gas, I may have to jump over and run some electric boats. Thanks for the hospitality guys. Always great to hang out with Lenny. Lenny was a great mentor to me as a kid growing up in this hobby. I had a blast helping him call the races. It took me a round or so to figure out who all you guys were - but pretty easy to put names to faces when your boats run as great as they do! Hope to see you guys again soon.

Just cracked the box a bit. Not exactly stock when it comes to the finish on the wood or stress points. They don't exactly like to hit things though.

BTW. How do you think the O.S. leg would work? I keep busting cables with the REK?

I have been running the OS leg for just over 2 seasons now... I haven't broke a shaft yet, and you seen and raced against my VS1 a few times. Looks like you guys had fun.

Howard,

I've run O.S. on my heavy-ish 30" Herb Stewart with motors up to and including a Neu 1515 1Y (for SAWS) with no cable failures. Kris Flynn will make you nice cables designed to fit the O.S. propshaft on one end and the collett on the other - seems the dimensions differ a tiny bit. The really nice thing about the O.S. is that you can adjust the tilt angle without messing with the servo rod (or cable) lengths (but you probably know that). The O.S. also has superior propshaft bushing support with an oiling port to make lubing simple.
