View Full Version : Shear Pin Too Strong on Rudder?

Well I managed to hit something in the lake today.... have no idea what. Oddly enough the boat kept going but when I went to turn I knew something was wrong. Got the boat to shore and noticed immediately that the rudder was bent all the way back. It had sheared the pin just as it was designed to do but not without damage to the L-Bracket that attaches to the strut and then connects to the rudder assembly. I bent it pretty badly. I'm wondering if maybe I should use something a bit weaker as a shear pin? I think had the shear pin been a bit weaker it would have saved this from happening. Any thoughts on this?

I noticed that on mine, the bolt used for the shear looks too beefy to me. Maybe replace it with some thick copper wire?

Seems that mine was to weak as it sheared by just hitting the sandy bottom near the shore.
so anyway I put a nylon bolt in it. I did have to drilll the hole alittle bit but It seems to work or at least I'll find out when it hits somthing.
