I have a small hydro I'm just about finished with.
I need to know best place to put a water pickup as my rudder doesn't have a built in one.
Not sure if a prop wash type would be suitable or putting it on the rear of one of the sponsons??

Any help appreciated!

Either one works, although the prop wash is usually easier to do with simpler plumbing. Put the pick up in the 12 to 3 o'clock quadrant or the prop wash, closer to 1:00.

Also prop wash one will have the most constant water flow. I have had them also under the sponson with equal success. I am setting mine up with propwash for the more continuous flow.

What is the best way to make one for a small hydro bend some tubing and have it come out the back of the transom over the prop as fluid mentioned?

Never mind I just googled prop wash pickups and found a suitable photo of one I can make.

Also noticed one on here

Or should the tapered edge be on the other side?

That won't pick up much water, face the tube 180 degrees around. This would work better although I'd put it further back and on the other side of the mount:

That's what I thought I flip it and switch it to the other side.
Thanks

Well my pickup didn't work to well motor came back way hotter then I would have liked, I could barely touch it.
I guess I need to move the pickup back more how much further would you suggest??

Gotta keep temps down I am running a 4000kv motor on 3s in this little hydro.
It ran great just don't want to smoke anything!!

That pickup won't do - it is made to go on the transom of a submerged drive boat. The slanted part faces the front of the boat, but the pickup is molded such that you can't turn it without turning the whole thing.

I can always cut it so that the taper is on the back rather then the side.
So move it back a little then adjust the taper and you think I'll be good?

You want the taper to be on the front - facing the front of the boat. And it has to be in the prop wash when it's running - it won't do any good if it's too high to catch water. And it will do even better if you tilt the bottom toward the front (just a little) too.

Yeah sorry I meant taper in front I said it incorrectly.
I will try to adjust this and see if it works better next time out.

Thanks

Jeff,

Here's the completed pickup. I wanted two: rudder + propwash to provide extra cooling ; one for SC & one for motor for this application. ( prop's mocked up for clearance measurements)
