Is it possible that my Flex Shaft is too short? I was running the boat yesterday and the motor started spinning freely. At first I thought that the shaft had broken...but then it started working again then quit again... I took the outboard apart to find that the shaft was just barely touching the stub shaft. Further investigation showed that the other end was all the way inside the motor collet (up to where the squared off part ends).

Is the shaft too short (4 1/2") or is the squared off part too long?

BTW, I have installed 1/4" brass tube in place of the factory Teflon tube. I can see this could require the shaft to be a bit longer... maybe 1/16 of an inch. It looks like even with the Teflon tube that if the shaft gets shoved all the way in the Collett it would barely hit the stub shaft.
