Previously, I had a Novak 550 Ballistic Motor (~ 600 Watts) powering my 30” custom fiberglass cat, utilizing 130 flex cable for the drive. Fastest it ever ran was 31.6 MPH & the motor always ran TOO HOT despite being water cooled, so I decided to raid my Spare Change Cache in order to finance an upgrade.

Purchased another SeaKing 180 ESC from Steven & modded it for extra cooling, plus a new 150 cable assy, coupler, & a dozen pairs of 5.5 mm bullets. Also bought the rudder assy shown in Pic # 1 from OSE, because it was cheap & the rudder blade could be easily replaced. I got a Tacon 4074 2150 KV motor from HobbyPartz ($49.00W/free shipping).

I removed & replaced the old motor mount & stuffing tube, fabricated an extension bracket for the rudder assy, & replaced the rudder blade with a longer one I made. I also had to rebuild the prop shaft strut to accommodate the larger 150 sized flex cable & Teflon liner.

Pics # 2 & 3 are the end result - - hopefully, with a top speed closer to 50 MPH than the previously unexciting 30 . . . .

Jay,

Thanks for posting the Pic - - Dave never sent me the link to the Photog’s site.

Rumdog,

Fastest so far is 44.7 MPH with an X440. When I try a larger prop, she just slows down. The Tacon just doesn’t have enough GRUNT, guess I need to order a Leopard replacement motor to reach the 50 mark.

Cool. Have you tried raising the strut when going to a larger prop?

Yeah, tried that, but didn’t notice any appreciable difference in MPH on my GPS.
