Can someone explain how they work?

Most have a flood chamber offset to the port side of the hull. It is sealed off from the rest of the hull but runs from transom to the bow. A hole in the transom allows water to flow into the chamber whe the boat is up side down. the weight of the water in the hull will upright the hull, or at least get it far enough over for the prop to dig back in and relaunch the boat. When back on plane, the water flows back out of the chamber via the transom hole.

Some smaller monos use a tallish dome shaped cowling which just makes it very tippy when uprighted. seems to work well also.
