It is my pleasure to announce the 2012 NAMBA FE Nat's, Title Sponsored by our very own Steven Vaccaro at Offshoreelectrics.com!

Legg Lake has a separate park entrance for model boaters. Please see the highly scientific map attachment.

Lenny Blake (http://www.rumracingproducts.com/) is on board to call the race. Lenny has been calling the Az Winter Warmups races for the past 7 years, as well as numerous nitro/gas events and I'm excited to have him on board for this event.

Race schedule is listed above. 4 boat minimum with a paid cut-off date of May 19th. Sign ups will be taken after this date, but any class that doesn't have 4 paid entries by this date will be dropped from the schedule. No refunds after May 19th.

$25 for first class, $10 for each additional class.

Banquet cost: $35.

T-Shirt: $20.

Payment deadline for classes and banquet is May 19th. Either your classes on this thread or PM/Email me. I will then send you a formal Welcome Letter and sign up document.

For those racing the Phil Thomas Stealth Sport Hydro, please make sure your hull conforms to the 65% rule (Bottom of transom / width between sponson plane surfaces).

Host hotel will be the Ramada (http://www.ramada.com/hotels/california/south-el-monte/ramada-el-monte/hotel-overview). Special room rate (Keyword: NAMBA) $79 for King and $85 for (2) double beds. The banquet will be here as well, and the hotel has a restaurant/bar located on the premises.

You're on Doug. I'll reserve tickets to the opening of the Redondo Beach Kabuki Ballet and seek out other culturally enlightening venues as well, especially the Hermosa Beach Transgender Tap Dancing Accordian Players Revue.

Ah Tony; too much culture - will be looking for something more simple like something with a view of bikinis. :)

Am going to put this on my calander. Hope I can get a least one of the WI-MN crew to go.

I will have to get the Rolling Ghetto smogged and insured so I can attend. I will not be able to run a lot of classes as I did before. too old and I need sleep. How long until a schedule of classes run for the day's will be out? I really need it to be able to plan.

Dream schedual would have a little of everything each day. Not all offshore one day Not all sports the next Not all hydros and Not all scales the last day

Here's my hopefully final list:

1. N-2 OFFSHORE CAT
2. P LTD OFFSHORE CAT
3. P OFFSHORE CAT
4. T OFFSHORE CAT

Dave also asked me to be (in my words) the "OFFICIAL NAMBA LEGG LAKE NATIONALS SCUBA RETRIEVAL DIVER", and I accepted. So Joe V., you'll get a chance to see my skills in action.

Looks like I will be busier than a one legged man in an ass kicking contest. Gonna be a blast!

Dave, how much is this gonna cost me for entry fees? RSVP

Jim, Thanks for accepting. I'm hopeful that having you signed on as the diver means that we won't need a diver! But, it's good insurance.

I'll have the race fees figured shortly.

Please-no posts on this thread about this. They will be deleted. There are other threads open for discussion on this topic.

01-23-2012, 12:13 PM
Glad to hear, Todd. I am hopeful that the 1/8th scale class will make the 4 boat minimum and it's good to know you'll be there. Not many of them exist on the left coast, so you posting this early will hopefully get Naylor on board, as well as a few Az guys that (I think) have plans to build them before the Nat's.

Just when I manage to lose a little weight! You guys will not be disappointing. I've never had a meal that Kim made that wasn't fantastic.

At the last SAWs, the pulled pork was so good we couldn't get anyone to put a boat in the water during lunch (and the lake was glass smooth).

Please call them directly. (626)350-9588. NAMBA may not be logged into their website. Also, I just set this deal up yesterday, but I bet if you call the front desk, they will get it done. If not, PM me and I'll get is square.

Race signups are open.

$25 first class, $10 each additional class. Payment deadline, as well as class cut off date (4 min to run) is May 19th. This also includes the banquet cost so I have an accurate head-count for the host hotel.

Banquet and shirt costs are still being finalized, but I'm shooting for $35 and $25 respectively.

OK to list post your classes here and also please PM me your email address and cell phone # if I don't have it already. If you have posted already, please re-post it after this thread.

Thank you for your consideration, gentlemen! I promise you this will be an event worth attending. If you're on the fence, make the commitment. You won't be sorry.

I am working real hard on making this trip. My goal has been to go to all the NAMBA Nats and I already have missed a couple. I have got to see Legg Lake and I have got to meet in person some of the guy's that will be there. Especially Darin. I will be bringing my little hatchet so I can bury it.

Got some important questions though - I do not want to come unprepared:
1. I take it, it will be 3 heat classes?
2. 3 bouy turns or 5?
3. Start clock starts when - 30 seconds, 60 seconds,??
4. 1/6 mile course correct?
5. How far out is the course from the shore? Distance from shore to lane one?
6. Drivers stand right? Is the stand in the center of the front straight?
7. What would be your best guess as to the height of the driver stand over the course?
8. What direction does the driver stand face? East West North or South? Sun glare?
9. What is the anticipated temperature of the water at Legg Lake during June?
10. Can anybody tell me the pH and Hardeness of the water at Legg Lake?

Now the really important questions:
1. How far is the Hotel Ramada from Legg Lake?
2. How far is the Liquor store?
3. How far is the nearest establishment where scenery can be viewed? And I don't mean geographical.

It won't be long and I will have myself talked into this. :)

Don't have an answer to most of your questions, but in answer to question 9, water temps have gone down since they banned peeing in the lake.

Hi Doug
I haven't raced at Legg Lk in over 30 yrs . Its set up for gas . I believe 70 ft dia 5 bouy turns, measured 1/6th mile . Right out of the rule book offical course . You can race side by side around the turns if you can trust the guy next to you to stay in their lane .
Lots of 2 lap records set there .I'm going to the Dist 19 race March 17 - 18 just to get reaquainted . The front straight is not as close as I'd like , but plenty of room for 7 boat gas heats . I'ts always been one of the premier race courses in the country .

1. I take it, it will be 3 heat classes? 4 Rounds, 4 boats make the class
2. 3 bouy turns or 5? 5 nice, shiny, red slalom balls.
3. Start clock starts when - 30 seconds, 60 seconds,?? 30 second FE start
4. 1/6 mile course correct? Yes-but it's not a legal FE course. No records can be applied for.
5. How far out is the course from the shore? Distance from shore to lane one? My guess...60 feet?
6. Drivers stand right? Is the stand in the center of the front straight? Absolutely. It's a shaded, concrete structure.
7. What would be your best guess as to the height of the driver stand over the course? 6.5 feet above the water.
8. What direction does the driver stand face? East West North or South? Sun glare? I think Northeast...but Brian answered in another thread
9. What is the anticipated temperature of the water at Legg Lake during June? You'll know when you're thrown in it for a class win.
10. Can anybody tell me the pH and Hardeness of the water at Legg Lake? Now that's a secret.

Now the really important questions:
1. How far is the Hotel Ramada from Legg Lake? 1.2 miles
2. How far is the Liquor store? Every corner.
3. How far is the nearest establishment where scenery can be viewed? And I don't mean geographical. Hmmm...Lohan is about 12 miles away. She's clean now, too. Also the Columbian chick from Modern Family is 14.2 miles away. I'm planning on doing the Belushi ladder trick like in Animal House on Wednesday night. Who's with me?

It won't be long and I will have myself talked into this. :) The trailer is purchased.

Maybe you could have a “cheese-off” inbetween heats

Ball - funny you should mention the business trip. Thats exactly what I am working on. I took on a new client that has a cheese manufacturing Plant in Tempe AZ. They want to send me out there. I am working on tieing the trip together. Gets alot of my travel expenses covered. Yes California has happy cows - they feed them that happy tobacco. But Wisconsin has happy cheese makers. Not going to tell you what we eat/smoke.

Dave - thanks for the info. However I am going to need the pH and Hardness readings as my boats are dialed in for 6.98 pH and 13.45 hardeness.

I'll get my namba membership taken care of ASAP, Had it last year just have to renew. I think that is about all i can run with the boats i have. Batts shouldn't be a problem.

Is there anyone that is going to have a generator i can plug into, I'll bring 100 ft of 10 gauge extension cord. Just need a few chargers, shouldn't be pulling more then 10 amps maybe 15 if I was going hard on 3 batts, but that shouldn't be necessarily. Willing to make any needed donations towards fuel.

Well after being 99% committed and begining to make arrangements to attend the Nats, I run into a home challenge that is going to cause me to reschedule mu time and redirect my attention.

Came home on Wednesday 4/4 to fire in my shop and shed. I did a post in the Off topic to show pics and explain.

I was feeling real good about this years Nats. I had confidence in my boats and my driving and was looking forward to seeing what I could do against the best.

Good luck to you all. I will will regroup and be looking to race you another time. Doug

Mike-Technically you can race the P-Ltd Offshore boat as-is in P-Offshore. But, it's a task I wouldn't even think the top FE guys could pull off with any amount of success. There will be a 2 lap difference each round between a good P-Ltd boat and full P boat. 8 laps for the day will separate the top P-Ltd boat and the P boat. Plus, there is a great chance you'll be back-to-back at least 1 time. Maybe 2 or 3. That means, you pull your P-ltd boat out of the water, go to the pits, put in fresh batteries and go race it again. You've got 5 minutes to do that turn-around if you're back-to-back.

My suggestion-Give your full attention to P-Ltd. It will be a highly competitive class and it typically comes down to less than 1 lap at the end of the day between 1st and 2nd. However-it's your call.

Thanks for signing up! Welcome letters will be emailed to you on Monday.

Doug-I'm going to go ahead and believe that you will make so much progress on your shop in the next 30 days that you'll actually feel comfortable committing to the Nat's again. You'll have this overwhelming feeling that your brain will need a break sometime around the 3rd week in June. Sorry again about the loss!

Ken-What's wrong? Only 4 classes on Wednesday? You'll be bored.

'll be right there with you. Plan on running a Mystic or Miss Geico in Offshore, and will likely use it for dual-duty in both P-Ltd and P Offshore (with a motor swap, of course...)

that is a quote from Darin in another thread. This is why I thought I'd have time between heats to put a larger motor in for P.

I would like to propose that P offshore be switched with Q offshore on Thursday the 21st to allow my self and any other racer that so chooses time to do a motor swap. I really don't want to have to get hardware for another boat, I have 5 good sets of 4s2p, but wouldn't mind having more and not having to set up a completely different hull would save me enough money to get some more batts.

Mike,

It's a ballbuster for the organizers to schedule classes that work for the majority. Lots goes into it and it's hard to change once set in cement. It's a cross we all have to bear if we want to run multiple classes.

Yeah... I wasn't meaning that I'd swap motors in the same boat... I was going to bring one setup for one class, and one for the other, and I don't really expect to be highly competitive in the Open P classes...

Ok well i can probably swap power plants in 5 min. I understand the difficulties of scheduling the heats to best suit the majority of racers, but since newland and Hains will be the only ones affected as of yet and since they are racing p spec offshore, p off shore and q offshore i didn't think it would affect much of anything. Just a thought and understand if it isn't a possibility, but it seems feasible.

I don't really expect to be highly competitive in any of the classes, but that isn't gonna stop me from trying. It gets boring only running one class, but a break between classes would be nice.

Please get signed up! Do so right here, then I will send you a Welcome Letter with more information about the race and when to send your race fees.

Remember, May 19th is the paid entry cut off date to finalize the classes that will run at the event.

We are still looking for class sponsorships @ $50 per class. As many of you know, it takes quite a bit of funding to run an event like this. So, if you, your club, your district or your business are in a position to help, it would be greatly appreciated.

1/10th Scale Modern has been moved to Friday. In hindsight, I should have given more consideration to scale-only drivers regarding the class schedule and thanks to Jim Bickford for planting the seed, so to speak. This way, Modern runs Friday, and Vintage and 1/8th runs on Saturday. Those involved have already been contacted personally, and anyone that was on the fence to sign up for the scale classes, please do so!

Silly question I suppose, but just thought I'd check:

1) Are tents provided, or do we bring our own?

2) Are tables being provided?

3) Will we be tearing everything down at the end of each day, or can we leave things relatively setup??

For those driving, I am working on the assumption that they will be self-sufficient with shelter, tables and power. If anything is needed, just ask...we'll provide it.

Ted McKay is staying on site each night, the park is locked and also police patrolled. Typically at the gas events, tables/tents stay up, and equipment gets locked in pit trailers.

2. How many laps will we be running?

Check out Brian's 2 lap video on the main forum that Tony posted. 2-Lap record post. That's the course. 1/6th mi legal gas course. 6 lap sprint heats and Offshore is a timed 4 minute race. All on a flying clock start.

And, if a boat sinks, you'll be doing your thing at the close of racing for that day.

The "no refund" deadline has been set for May 19th, but we will be flexible with this date as we know things happen as hulls start to get tuned for this event.

All money will be immediately refunded for a class that doesn't "make".

What we do ask is that by May 19th, your class list is firm. And paid. In some cases, other racers are counting on your entry. If you need more time, please contact me.

Also, there will be a point in time when the "no refund" date is firm as well. It's necessary for proper financial planning of an event like this, and the date will be communicated in advance.

David,

I need to ask for some clarification and figured I'd do it here so others could benefit from the answer. My question is in regards to keeping P-Ltd motors legal, and/or MAKING them legal again.

1) Is it legal to remove the larger black heat-shrink from around the existing wires? The UL-1 motors, for example, the black piece doesn't even stay in the can (keeps sliding out). Can it be removed?

2) If I have a motor that has had the original factory wire covering/heat-shrink damaged, can I replace it, or is the motor junk for this event??

3) Can I put new heat shrink over the top of the factory wire covering/heat-shrink?

In regards to making a motor "legal":

4) I have a couple of older BJ26 motors that had the short motor leads cut back short, and I needed to extend them back out again. The original wires come out of the can the required 5mm (at least that), and I extended them from there and had to re-shrink. Are these legal?

5) I suppose this goes with #1... When making a motor "legal" again, does this require putting a piece of shrink over all three wires together?? (Black piece at the endbell??).

Concerning KV Checking:

6) When KV Checking, Are the "known samples" for each motor type, or are we just looking to make sure nothing is over the UL-1 Motors KV??

Thanks.

Not trying to cause a stir, but I need to understand this stuff prior to making the trip so I can make sure and NOT cause a stir when I get there... ;)

It can be removed, as long as it's replaced.

2) If I have a motor that has had the original factory wire covering/heat-shrink damaged, can I replace it, or is the motor junk for this event??

Original shrink can be cut off and replaced, but keep in mind that you need to replace it with shrink that is similar to what is on there (i.e. thickness and heat rating...don't worry about color).

3) Can I put new heat shrink over the top of the factory wire covering/heat-shrink?

Only from the end of the wire to 5 mm outside from the endbell. From 5 mm outside the endbell to inside the endbell, it needs to remain stock, or put back in stock form. Consider this area the Holy Land of P-Ltd Motors.

In regards to making a motor "legal":

4) I have a couple of older BJ26 motors that had the short motor leads cut back short, and I needed to extend them back out again. The original wires come out of the can the required 5mm (at least that), and I extended them from there and had to re-shrink. Are these legal?

I recommend not running these motors. My interpretation of "to be run as shipped from the manufacturer" includes keeping the OE wire length intact...and not adding wire.

5) I suppose this goes with #1... When making a motor "legal" again, does this require putting a piece of shrink over all three wires together?? (Black piece at the endbell??).

If it had it that way when it was shipped to you, then yes.

Concerning KV Checking:

6) When KV Checking, Are the "known samples" for each motor type, or are we just looking to make sure nothing is over the UL-1 Motors KV??

With the exception of the 1/10th scale classes, the sample will consist of just UL-1 motors to set a Kv ceiling.

Thanks.

Not trying to cause a stir, but I need to understand this stuff prior to making the trip so I can make sure and NOT cause a stir when I get there... ;)

To all: I will have SOME shrink product on site to help get P-Ltd motors "back to stock". If you need help with this, please see me during open water.

This topic is also not open for discussion. We have a rule in place (good, bad or indifferent) that states that these motors are to be run "as shipped from the manufacturer" with the exception of 3 allowable modifications. Any connectors, adding water cooling and grinding a flat spot. My attempt to answer Darin's questions comes from my authority, as Contest Director, to clear up any rule interpretations for the 2012 Nationals, at the same time try to allow some flexibility to get motors legally running again with some clarification on how to "unmodify" modifications.

If you have any questions, please let me know. But, again, I'm not up for an "opinion" discussion. I have more important things to do with my time right now, one of which is putting on the best FE Nat's NAMBA has ever seen.

Just a note to those racing at the Nats...

Per the NAMBA rules, you are required to have your NAMBA ID number on each boat that enters the water. You can find the rule in Section 8.A.1 of the NAMBA Rule book:

A. GENERAL SAFETY REGULATIONS
1. NAMBA members must have their NAMBA numbers on their boats and their backs
for easy identification. Minimum number sizes will be 1-1/2” on the back and 1” on
the boat, except where noted in specific class rules.

I could have sworn that there was wording somewhere that indicated that the number on the boat was to be 1/4" minimum, but I can't find it now.

Anyhow, just thought people should be aware. It's the first rule in the Safety section, so it's going to be hard to explain why your boat doesn't have the appropriate numbers on it... ;)

Section #28 - Page #8 - Revised 5/15/11 (Sport Hydro Rules)

vii) the boat must have the driver's NAMBA membership number displayed above the at-rest waterline on the hull in numbers a minimum of 1/4" tall in a manner visible to an onlooker.

Section #28 Page #9 Revised 5/15/11 (Offshore Rules)

iv) All boats must have numbers printed or painted on the hulls above the waterline. They can either be fictitious race numbers or NAMBA membership numbers. They should be clearly visible in relation to the size of the hull as they would be on a full-size race boat.

Good, Tony... I knew it was there somewhere.

Now, what it appears is that for Sport Hydros, 1/4" numbers are fine... but it would appear that, for all else, 1" would be required?

All my boats have printed decals with my number on them in 1/4" or so, but I'm thinking I'll be carrying a Sharpie and some white electrical tape, just in case...

Final class list has been updated. The following classes have been cut:

T Hydro

N-1 Mono

Jersey Skiff

Q Sport

Refunds will be sent to those that have paid for these classes (Garrard, Jordan, Buaas). I'll wait a few days to see if you want to make changes before sending it out.

June 1st is the firm "no refund" cut off date. Final race fees will be tabulated on this date, according to the sign ups on the first 2 posts of this thread. Any drops after this date will not be refunded, with the exception of non-attendance due to an emergency.

Sign ups are still open for those classes that have made it.

Just a few random comments regarding some questions I have fielded the past few weeks (and the post above):

Not sure what brought up the questions about NAMBA #'s on boats...but, yes, boats need to be identified. Don't get hung up on the precise measurement of the numbers.

Legg Lake is a 1/6th mile course and we will be using the full mill. More information will be shared at the Drivers Meeting.

We will be using a computer-aided lap counter that your pitman controls. It is a trigger button that is pushed at the finish of each legal lap. It keeps track of lap and heat times. Remember this: EACH LEGAL LAP. More will be discussed at the Drivers Meeting.

Lunch and drinks will be provided for a nominal fee each race day. Tuesday's Open Water: Racers are on their own. Kim Grim will be doing 2 days worth of her famous race cooking on Thursday and Friday, and Jeff Michaud will be doing something scrumptious on Saturday.

Please email me if you require power, a table, chair, or an EZ UP. I will send out a specific email to those racers signed up about this as well. FYI: The pit area is fully shaded with pine trees and the Drivers Stand is shaded as well. I am working on the assumption that those driving are self-sufficient in this regard, unless they have notified me of their specific needs.

If there are any questions, please let me know! I was at Legg Lake last weekend at a district race and the course and site are in fantastic shape.

For those classes that made it by the skin of their teeth, 3 boats are required to enter the water on race day in order for the class to run.

At this point in time, any drops that pull down a class to 2 entrants, the class will need to be scratched and the remaining racers will be refunded their race fees.

I would guess he's asking about the "Gentleman's Agreement" that has been used in the past for 1/8th scale competition by some clubs that limits the motor sizes to 1527 Neus, certain sized Lehner's, etc...

Just guessing here, but I haven't heard anything about such an agreement and I believe that the class is being run under straight-forward NAMBA rules... Just my hunch...

Wilmer, I have no idea what you just said, but I'm glad that you're jazzed about the event! Me, too.

No need to clarify...we'll do it in person in a week. And, I'm holding you to your "relaxation" comment.

LoL! You must be misinterpreting me.
My cousins from Long Beach came and saw me at RCX and LOVED watching the boats.
I told them I would be racing at Legg, and they want to see it in action..

I'm still getting caught up at work, but I'll feed some info about our event throughout the week.

First off, hats off to Jason Sims for taking High Points again this year. If he wasn't winning the class, he was typically second. His consistency, and a top performing LSH Whip is what got him past my point total. We were literally within a few points of each other at the end of each day.

Team Points went to The Scottsdale Model Boaters, with me, Jim Osborne and Ted McKay making up the team. Both Jim and Ted come from the nitro/gas world and have aquired a few FE boats during the past year or so and they are right up there with the best of us. In fact, Jim only signed up for 4 classes and we had to pick 3 of them for Team Points. He finished strong in all 4 of his classes.

N-2 Mono started off the event and it was dominated by the Delta Force 26's. Legg Lake has great water and these boats really sang that high RPM tune with every heat.

P Sport Hydro-It was hard to get past Jason's Whip with full P Power, but congratulations to Jim Osborne for taking 2nd place with a UL-1 powered Insane hull.

P Hydro. What can I say. Twaits in action. Pure and simple.

P-Ltd Cat was a very competitive class as well and congratulations to Buaas for almost sweeping it, and for Tony collecting 1400 points as well. Ted McKay dusted off his box-stock Geico (ok-not stock prop), complete with inline rudder, and gave chase to the field. He pulled off 3rd place, too.

Q Mono was a great class and I thought I shot myself in the foot in the first round as my boat barely left the pits. Didn't tighten the collet. But, I was able to win the next 3 rounds to take the win.

N-2 Offshore. Talk about evenly tuned boats. Sims and I were only 1/4 lap apart at the end of the 4th round, with Sims taking the win.

P-Ltd Offshore. The top 4 drivers were only separated by 1 lap. Jason took the win, but congratulations to Lenny Blake for taking 2nd place with a newly built Titan 29. Also, Osborne was right there in 3rd place with a Cyberstorm.

P-Offshore. My Titan was running very well all weekend. I finished with 45 laps total over 4 rounds, and that was the top lap count for any offshore class that ran that day. Mike Pags and Ted McKay were tied going into the 4th round and were also in the same heat. Ted and I spilled that secret to Pags on the drivers stand because he wasn't sure of the standings, and those two did battle for the next 4 minutes. Mike got the start, and never let his lead over Ted go. They were never more than 6 or so boat lengths apart for the entire race, with Pags being the lead boat at the end of the race, and we used that to break the tie as they did finish on the same exact lap count.

One fantastic moment during the 3rd round was between me, Ted and Mike Shaunnessy. All three of us started and rounded turn 1 and it seemed that I had lane 1, Ted had lane 2, and Mike had lane 1 1/2. All three of us blasted down the 400 foot backstretch and all 3 of us knew that Shaunnessy's green cat was between me and Ted somewhere, but nobody could see it...including Mike. I actually thought he backed off or that I would pull away from him. Nope. All 3 boats maintained the most perfect lane direction and we just couldn't see his cat behind my boat and rooster for what seemed like 4 seconds. I got scared and dived for the offshore pin early, cutting it, and then exposing Mike's cat so he could them steer it around the pin!

Q Offshore. Pags has had a good run winning Q Offshore for many, many years, but I de-throned him this year. He's pissed. Not really. But kind of.

T Offshore. Mike had a driveline explode in his cat, tearing a section of the hull and all. I thought he was done. After all, he was running all 5 classes that day. Nope, somehow he managed to find time to rebuild it and get the cat back on the water. However, the lost laps cost him and Tyler had a very good running hull. Ken was running a new full on 10S build and it still needs a little more setup time.

N-2 Sport. More Jason Sims and his Whiplash in action. It's a combo that's really hard to beat.

P-Ltd Mono. I braved the smaller hull choice with this class, using a Delta Force 26, because Legg Lake lays down nicely. Congratluations to Darin for taking 3rd place with the RTR Impulse 31, too.

OPC-The highlight of the event, hands down. We had all chunked heat before the 4th round, except for Kylie Morana. Her consistent driving helped her pull off 4 very strong finishes for the over all win. On the last lap of the 4th round, she was getting chased by some lunatic driving a purple Cobra and it was a drag race to the finish, with Kylie edging out the Cobra by 2 boat lengths. She got to take the celabratory swim in Legg Lake!

Crackerbox. Congratulations to Dick Roberts. Also, Kim McKay took 2nd place at her very first FE Nationals!

P Mono. Pags was so upset at me for taking Q Offshore, that his main goal in life that day was to keep P Mono away from me. I've never won P Mono and I thought this was my year. I finished the first 3 rounds with a perfect 1200 points, and Mike wasn't far behind. Going into the 4th round, I had a commanding lead after 3 laps, but got caught up in some kind of cross wake or something and as my boat rounded turn 1 it took flight, submarined, then came up upside down, all I could hear was Pags yelling in the pits! He got me. But I know he's losing sleep over the thought of the Q Offshore award hanging on my wall.

Q Hydro. It was all Pags. 1500 points. I will have one of these next year, too.

T Sport Hydro. Buaas has a great running T boat and dominated this class and 1/8th Scale as well.

1/10th Modern. Congratulations to Ted McKay for his first FE title! Yes-he got to swim in Legg Lake, too.

N-2 Hydro. Darin said to me early in the morning that he was going to throw in his cat just to get some racing in. Turns out he scored 1300 points and got the class win!

P-Ltd Hydro. I think I will frame the heat sheet that had me, Buaas, Grim, Twaits, Stark and Morana. The amount of talent on the drivers stand was impressive. 29 points separated 1st through 3rd place.

P-LSH. Again, the Sims/whiplash combo is a tough one to crack! As always, this was the most attended class of the entire event.

1/10th Vintage went to Leonard Feeback, who has gone nearly 40 years since his last National Championship! Congratulations!

T Mono. I don't remember what Tyler was running here, but I think it was his 6S Q boat. That's what I was running, and Mark and Ken had monster 10S monos on the water. Ken had the boat to beat, but he had a charging issue during round 2 and he needed to pull his boat into the infield for a DNF. I locked down 1400 points for the win.

1/8th Scale. Buaas ripped off a 1600 pt day with his Executone. It's a very good running hull.

SoCal FE and the Scottsdale Model Boaters offer our special thanks to Lenny Blake for calling the race, Ted McKay for pulling his travel trailer from Az to provide pit security, Jim Osborne for being my go-to guy for just about everything, Tracy Osborne for handling the sign ups, raffle and post-race data for the NAMBA website, Pat McDonald for meticulously keeping the heat sheets and scoring updated, revised and posted, Mark Grim for handling the Whittier Narrows/Legg Lake Park items, keeping the course set, doing some retrieval boat motor tuning and providing me a socket set to change my truck battery mid-race on Saturday, Kim Grim for busting her butt on Sunday getting the Drivers Stand cleaned, then spending 2 days cooking us a most fabulous lunch, Jeff Michaud for helping us with lunch on Saturday and for having a happy hour party/taco feed at his home on Thursday, and Mike Pags for throwing down his credit card for the alcohol at the banquet.

And lastly, a special thank you to my roommate, Dougie Twaits, for hanging in there with a positive attitude for this event, knowing that 84 pounds of his FE gear is (still) lost at UPS. He had enough gear and loaner equipment to get boats on the water, but it's just not the same as if he had his own equipment.
