You both sound just like my parents did in the '60s - according to them I listened to "kid's music" back then. Who cares what music is like today - or in the 1940s for that matter - there is plenty of music available for everyone, your grandkids or your grand parents. How awful the world would be if all we had to listen to was just the BeeGees...or just Buddy Holly...or just the Stones...or just Metallica. .

Jay, you are correct but I care about music and the way it has morphed into people who have never listened to the origins of music.....Africans beating a log....people singing and composing music in their homes, some do and many do not, and yes their are some very talented musicians today, who write and compose. As I stated, I listen to all genres of music and the era is not important but the quality. ...Classical had an era of brilliance... popular modern music???

I hear from my nephews and nieces (10-26) questions like this. Why don't people sing like they used to? I say because nobody actually sits down long enough to actually listen to what's being played. Douggie, you and I are from a time where we were fascinated with good recordings and good equipment. We sat down and listened to the music. The nuances of a performance. And if lucky, the high fidelity of a good system. We listened with friends and family. Now days, we are constantly on the go. We multi-task our lives. Music has become a source of back ground entertainment. And as such, the quality of the performance and of the music has suffered. In addition, we are bombarded with deceptive marketing. Equipment being sold as hi-fi just because of thunderous bass and treble that will singe your eyebrows. Artists now rely heavily on software rather than band mates. So you are not alone in your observations. These topics are often brought up on audio forums as well.

I have to agree with fluid. Also, in regards to popular mainstream music, it's just simple catchy stuff. There are thousands of talented musicians out there for you. You're just old and set in your ways.

That would explain us. But what about the younger generations making the same observations? I too listen to many genres of music. Much of it from newer artists. But IMO the quality has suffered. Maybe we're talking about two different issues. I like good vocals and instrumentation. Yes there are some good vocalists and musicians still out there. But there are some terrible ones who gain more popularity thru their antics rather than their talent (if any). But as I stated earlier, music has become more of a source of background entertainment. As such, the recordings, mixing and engineering have suffered. It just doesn't seem to envelope the listener as much as it used to. I guess when you put a lot of money into your listening equipment, you'd expect a lot of return in the quality of the media. From some older posts of Douggie's, I know he has quite an investment in his equipment.

I am enveloped in music driving to worksites.. the car randomly selects a station when ign turned on.
I like every station except livebackchat or thetimeis.

Given a choice.. 70s&early 80s.. my teenage years .... easier fun times.. the music reminds me of good times, great girlfriends , and sleeping beyond 0800 ...

Old, maybe....set in my ways...no...I still attend live concerts, but most people today collect poor quality audio from the web for free. A lot of mainsteram artists today lip sync at live concerts or rely on the guy who is manipulating the sound with digital processing to the concert audio system to alter their vocal presentation

This guy gets it.

I am but 31 years old but I listen to everything. The world would be so bland with just 5 bands. Most of who now are drugged out beyond recognition, or have shot their voice to crap and sound horrible. yes some of the new talent is "Strange" to say the least, but good things come from strange places.....

Dustin, I am 63 years old and I do listen to all types of music....yes, I have favourite bands, musicians, eras, types of recording methods, stage live presentation, small venues are in my opinion the best to watch live artists at work and my audio collection covers works from the last 10 years as well and there are some real talents out there, but I just do not get rap and that is my own decision as to musical taste and I am sure you have yours.

Music is a personal choice. Whatever type or era you listen to. However, I think the recording quality as of late has suffered. So you don't like rap music? It doesn't make you old or out dated. It's your choice. I particularly don't care for Britney Spears or Lady GaGa. It might be their voices or their recording engineers. There's nothing wrong with digitizing voices. I like Zapp. But some rap and pop I find unappealing. I think mostly due to the poor recording quality.

Wowsers.. you sound like my old man..garbage, crap, hurts the ears.. but AC/DC,ELO,CCR. Floyd, motley .... all the stuff I smuggled into the house from school now has pride of place in my mature age daughter's collection

stage live presentation, small venues are in my opinion the best to watch live artists at work ...... but I just do not get rap and that is my own decision as to musical taste and I am sure you have yours.

At 45 years of age I prefer live small venue 'pub' music.. where most all the legendary bands began ..playing for beer money !
I enjoy some the latest rap/club stuff.. but a few just aggravate my ear drums ... ditto some the early stuff ( ABBA.. geez ! )

A quick shot from me.
Last week I bought 2 CDs, Brittney Spears and Lady Gaga. The album art is worth it alone !!
I also buy a lot of my music online and that includes REO speedwagon, Van Halen , White snake, Yanni, Dragon force, and a bit of Eminem !

I listen to a lot of different types of music but I must admit my fall back is always Meatloaf.

A lot of todays music is not to my taste but it is still good as someone likes it. Listen to what you like................I do !!

Yes I did you use the word great to prove an issue with possible mental problems, but thank God we are not all perfect as these artists give us another view of life wth our mundane life views such as money and marititial/love issues etc. Which we do not address.

Buddy Holly, Johnny Cash, Elvis...
By far my favorite style of music to play, it crosses age barriers, you wouldn't believe how big Johnny is in the punk world, and I see older folks swing dancing to to The Reverend Horton Heat.

Another thing to consider... I like you, love all kinds of music (except country) and grew up listening to 60s/70s rock. You're comparing that music with popular music. That would be like comparing 60s and 70s rock with the crap they played on popular AM radio back then... yuck!

Growing up, I think the radio stations I listened to were of the "album-oriented rock" genre or some similar term, not pop.

Most of the young people I know that are musicians or are serious music listeners find plenty of great new music to listen to other than the mainstream crap.

Remember, very nearly 50% of the population has below-average intelligence.... "popular" does not equal "quality." ;-)

Oh well a hot body trumps any kind of talent today. All you have to do is shake whatever you've got and pretend you're singing! It truly is entertainment not music anymore. SO many performers from back in the day never would have made it today simply because the don't look good enough in print or video. Could you imagine Mama Cas trying to make it today? I see both music and movies have followed the same growth pattern..
From brilliant writing, outstanding performances and quality talent ... to repetitive themes, digitized lights and CGI , with gymnasium choreography by ppl who'd starve if busking for coin.

:nopity: if that truth offends anyone.

I watched "Breakfast at Tiffany's" a couple weeks ago.
My daughter(23) was unimpressed dad wanted to watch a film made 50 years ago...
The storyline, acting, alcohol , partying... had her wide eyed and mesmerized.

She has seen it 4? times since, with an increasing qty of friends around to share.
Some classics are just unbeatable for quality and style.

I'm going to see Def Leppard this Thurdsay night and I can't wait! It's funny because one of the younger guys I work with (25) is also going and he's keen for it! Quite surprising considering their popularity was quite a while ago now.

Of the current crop, about the only music I will pay for is Linkin Park, Lifehouse and Powderfinger. Linking Park verges on Rap and highly produced, but they amaze me how they can replicate their music live. Lifehouse and Powderfinger are just decent honest rock, shame Powderfinger recently called it quits.

I don't even bother looking at our Top 50 chart these days....

I can listen to, and enjoy almost any genre of music, just as long as there is some real talent, and writing involved. Record companies, promoters, and radio stations all control the music you hear in the main stream. In the old days, I would spend hours shifting through LP's at the bargain store, or listening to *underground* radio stations. Now days with the internet, searching is a bit easier. As an example, some bands, or artists morph so by following them you never know what might turn up. I was a fan of Fleetwood Mac, and was always wondering what ever became of their second guitarist, Bob Welch who wrote a lot of good stuff. Let's take a little drive, and see if we can find him;--- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dS-J2fQJLU8

I couldn't agree more...I built my own "stereo" when stereo came out because they were too expensive...loved to "improve" my system every chance I got to get the most out of those "records"...it's too easy now to just crank up the bass and not hear anything at all...

domwilson

I just built some speakers that I enjoy very much. I compared them to some Sonus Faber Liuto's. Yes the Luito's had more bass. They are very fine speakers. I think mine were almost equally clear. But the difference is I spent maybe $200.00 dollars in parts and the Luito's cost $5200.00 a pair! To get the added bass, I use a sub. That being said, With music and the equipment being used, It has become more important in the marketing and less important in the quality of the music or the equipment. The DIY community is starting to grow because people are getting tired of spending their hard earned cash on inferior products. If only we could DIY Britney or Lady GaGa?

There are actually amps in there, looks like they may be plugged in, and a couple of mics on the desk, no way the vocals were picked up that cleanly with that mic setup though, too much separation between the vocals and the rest of the acoustic rigs.
I've been in the studio recently working on our demo, in one take my vocal mic was also picking up a leather guitar strap creaking.
It's damn hard to get a good quiet recording hot off the floor in a proper studio, impossible in that setup! Glad our plans were for only one song to be recorded that way.
STarted arranging a new duet last night, Alternating verses of Amazing Grace and House of the Rising Sun done to the melody of House of the Rising Sun. I'm singing the House verses and Jessica is doing the Amazing Grace sections.
Also began working on another, Wayfarin' Stranger with a bridge of Swing Low Sweet Chariot. Except it has been changed to Ride low pink Cadillac. Sung in Bass.
Having a double bass player who can bow has opened up a whole range of interesting stuff! The fact that he spent 22 years as a CBC recording geek is an added bonus, bass is a new hobby for him, he is actually a trained jazz trumpet player, has a couple gold records!
I've learned more about music in less than a year with this new band than the previous 35 years! I started playing guitar when I was 7 after my mom walked in on me playing the into of Bach's Toccata & Fugue on my grandmothers pump organ! Asked my what I wanted to play and I said guitar. I inherited that organ! As well as my Great Uncles vintage Gibson SG delux with a bigsby trem.

If you listen to Dance Me you can hear the difference in recording, that one was done hot off the floor, no where near as nice and balanced a mix.

Even a digitally remastered cd sounds bloody awful! MP3 or any other compressed format is even worse.
If you can't tell the difference you have a tin ear and are probably wasting money on any kind of quality audio equipment!
Even the sample rate people choose to record at makes a huge difference to the sound quality.
Recording at "cd quality" gives you a flat lifeless sound, too many harmonics are lost.
There is a huge difference between having music on and actually listening to music. 99% of the people out there have never listened to music, if they had we would be insisting on better a better quality lossless format.

dana
02-04-2012, 08:15 AM
You're all just being picky. I like music. If a song is good I listen to it... Nothing like picking music apart so much you can't even find the joy in finding new music. Bottom lIne is... This is where it's at. Get over it. I'm not just some schmuck either ok? I've been playing guitar since I was 8. I've played in many bands, done recording myself and even build guitars these days, so I do have some idea what I'm talking about. Stop tearing audio apart and friggin enjoy it lol . Thanks

siberianhusky
02-04-2012, 09:23 AM
I do enjoy it and enjoy it much more on quality analog format.
I can hear Miles Davis breath on vinyl, why can't I hear that on digitally remastered cd?
Listen top Stevie Ray on Little Wing, analog you can here his amp hum in the quieter passages, not on CD. Any idea how many harmonics are eliminated when they "clean it up"
There is a reason people who really like their music spend big money on turntables and tube 2 channel amps. Modern digital technology is simply not the best! Media and marketing just claim it is and people with no clue just accept it.
When I listen to music I actually sit down and listen, to all of it. It's a wonderful experience to really hear music in it's full tone and richness.
No point in argueing, you'll never understand what I'm talking about. Like explaining green to a blind person.
There are some new lossless digital formats on the horizon and becoming available, the file sizes are larger. There has to be some kind of logic behind this change away from the current format. The logic? Better sound quality maybe?

Lossless compressed audio formatsA lossless compressed format stores data in less space by eliminating unnecessary data.
Uncompressed audio formats encode both sound and silence with the same number of bits per unit of time. Encoding an uncompressed minute of absolute silence produces a file of the same size as encoding an uncompressed minute of music. In a lossless compressed format, however, the music would occupy a smaller portion of the file and the silence would take up almost no space at all.
Lossless compression formats enable the original uncompressed data to be recreated exactly. They include the common[5] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audio_file_format#cite_note-4) FLAC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FLAC), WavPack (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WavPack), Monkey's Audio (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monkey's_Audio), ALAC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Lossless) (Apple Lossless). They provide a compression ratio of about 2:1 (i.e. their files take up half the space of the originals). Development in lossless compression formats aims to reduce processing time while maintaining a good compression ratio.
[edit (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Audio_file_format&action=edit&section=4)]Lossy compressed audio formatsLossy compression enables even greater reductions in file size by removing some of the data. Lossy compression typically achieves far greater compression but somewhat reduced quality than lossless compression by simplifying the complexities of the data.[6] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audio_file_format#cite_note-Lossy_Data-5) A variety of techniques are used, mainly by exploiting psychoacoustics (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychoacoustics), to remove data with minimal reduction in the quality of reproduction. For many everyday listening situations, the loss in data (and thus quality) is imperceptible. The popular MP3 format is probably the best-known example, but the AAC format found on the iTunes Music Store is also common. Most formats offer a range of degrees of compression, generally measured in bit rate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bit_rate). The lower the rate, the smaller the file and the more significant the quality loss.

I understand the differences. Turntables have advantages and disadvantages. But if we're talking about songwriting, I don't see how audio quality makes a difference. Far fewer people give a crap about hearing the humm of an amp in a recording than you think. Personally I like to hear a nice clean sound opposed to a live sound with a buncha noise muddying it up from old amps and such. Just my opinion. Also I think it depends on the music style you like. Vinyl has no place in modern metal IMO.

And one more thing, let's not forget that downloading music is much more environmentally friendly. Manufacturing vinyl, cds, tapes etc....creates ALOT of chemical waste, where downloads do not.

I buy a lot of vinyl that would otherwise be thrown in a dump just because somebody decided a MP3 is better for the environment.
My turntable is well over 30 years old, is it more environmentally sound to throw it away and all my vinyl then replace it with a computer and downloaded music that is a lower quality?
I will be able to pass my tube amp on to somebody eventually, it is completely repairable. can you say that about whatever transistorized disposable 10 000 watt 9.2 surround sound crap you own?
Sounds to me like my approach is a hell of a lot more environmentally friendly than yours.
Is it better to buy a Vintage guitar or a new one that they will need to cut down trees to build?
My newest guitar was built in 1986. My oldest '63. Should I buy a new disposable amp or recycle an old one that is worth more every day and can be repaired endlessly if required?

im not saying you have to throw your vinyl away. you can keep it too…. get a grip.
i own one surround sound system thats almost 10 years old and still working, but they are capable of more than just two channel left right listening, for more entertainment options.
i hardly would call your approach more enviromentally friendly, im just saying producing more vinyl and what not wouldnt help, it would just add to whats already there.
ipod lets me have thousands of songs at my fingertip without the need to take up a wall in my house with clutter.
personally i prefer a custom guitar, weather it ba made today or 50 years ago is irrelivent. buy what you like the sound of…. i prefer more processed tone. just because thats not what you like doesnt make it bad or wrong. ive been electricuited by many older amps, and for loud listening, tubes are the way to go. but im not playing the fleet center. most bands now use small modeling amps with a mic anyways…. the general public cant tell the difference. just enjoy the music man. heres a couple of my own designs…. the strat was made from some mahogany leftovers.697766977769778

I agree that music should be enjoyed. I just enjoy a higher level of reproduction. Poor equipment can deviate from that enjoyment and not let you enjoy it the way the artist intended.
Music is intended to influence our moods. The introduction of varying types and levels of distortions can alter that level of influence. Each format has it's benefits and it's compromises.
How much you are willing to accept is a personal choice.

I wish I got to listen to music at work. I work with some real grouches. Open a bag of chips and people start complaining. So when I get home after a stressful day. I try to kick back and listen to music. For me, it is an intimate experience. My primary focus is old skool R&B. But I listen to just about anything except country. I listen to Jazz, classical, Rap, pop, Rock, Doo Wop, etc. Depending on my mood, I may stream from the internet, MP3's, CD's, Albums, Tapes and even reel to reel. Each has it's own benefits. I have a couple of ipods for portability. But since I started building or modding my own speakers, my musical tastes have expanded. To each his own on the format you choose and for whatever reason. No argument there Douggie, but most people simply can't afford that sort of gear or have different priorities in life. A mate of mine has Electrocompeniet amps and pre-amp, B&W Nautlius 802 speakers and a Meridian CD player (couldn't justify the cost different to an EC CD player) and a decent turntable. The sounds is brilliant and to be honest, I hate hearing it because it is sooo much better than what I have. But it cost about $40,000, which buys me a new car and a lot of RC boat gear. And of course, you need to sit down to enjoy it.

Other people want to enjoy music, but don't want to shell out big bucks, or might not be able to simply sit and listen to it. So they make do with lower quality gear, or something portable. The main thing is that they're listening to music and enjoying it.

Bro, thanks for the wake-up call. There's something about Reed & the Velvets that just kicks me in the solar plexes and gets my blood flowing to places long forgotten.

Uptown Manhattan; late Eighties :

"So there I was holed up in a tiny park view room on the 25th floor at the San Moritz, frozen in agouraphobic meltdown from too many years of Kalifornication. My two week business trip had me weekending in NYC instead of Miami, where I spent a week on the infield of the Miami Gran Prix where the company I worked for had a small, silly booth. If the International Boat Show had been in town during race week as it had been in previous years, I'd be prowling South Beach feeling out of place as usual. But this year, it was NYC, where I was born, raised, and came at least partially of age. But as much as I wanted to take the elevator down to the street & hop a cab to Greenwich Villiage where in the late fifties I hung out in the radical coffehouses or in the mid sixties was a psuedo-intellectual at the New School nervously clinging to my student deferrment, I was stuck in place. In a tiny room hovering over the Greatest City On Earth not fully understanding why. By chance, or likely by divine intervention the local station on my room's tinny tv/radio began playing Sweet Jane. F'ing whammo ! There it was, with NO APOLOGIES. By the time the guitars and bass kicked in that hypnotizing tribal rock & roll riff ( 3:20 in the vid), I was on my feet, down the creaking elevator and hoofed it all the way from 59th street to (Positively) 4th street. My favorite record (remember them) store, 'It's Only Rock 'N Roll' was still there on 8th street, and within seconds I traded my workwear embarrasslingly button down shirt for their signature T-shirt. And had an awesome day, one that brought me back to the time when a promising young adolescent had the world at his feet. And that day the world again returned under my Cali addled feet, as it had always been , and will always be, because, damn it, Rock 'N Roll will Never Die, MF'r "

As my user name would imply, I have always been a rule, and mold breaker. Even at an early age
I sought to break away from what the producers, promoters, and radio stations were bombarding
me with. It was always the, "top 40", and 10 of those never got played. How many of you have
ever wanted to scream at the radio and say. HEY, I've heard this song like 5 times this morning,
how bout you flip that record over, and let us hear whats on the other side! With the advent of
*FM*, there was some relief, and you even got to hear, GASP, the long version. This, however was
short lived, for soon the bean-counters, and suits stepped in. If you, were/are near a large
college, or university with a station you are lucky then to hear something different. Now and then
NPR will surprize me. My thirst for new music, as well as my budget, led me to spend countless
hours in the aisles of used record stores, and thrift shops. I do this still today, cuz, well,
you never know, maybe I'll find a replacement for that 8 track that no amount of scotch tape could
repair. By reading the reviews, or about the artist on the record jacket, sometimes I got lucky.
Other times it was name recognition, and by that I mean, artists would sometimes form a new band,
or *sit-in* on an album. Now and then various artists would get together and put out a jam session
recording. Sooo, on this one double album jam session record jacket I read three names;
Mike Bloomfield,(of The Butterfield blues band,ETC), Al Kooper,(of Blood,sweat,and Tears,ETC), and
Steven Stills,(of, well,-- that guy). Oddly enough, the name of the album was, SUPER SESSION.
Guess you could say I got lucky!!!

Catching up on some previous posts -

Come on Tony, try and keep up, what are ya, some kind of old hippie? :hide: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&NR=1&v=8NziqyNiNdI

Well, now that you mention it : (1969, Ocean Beach Ca - Me on the tub on the left - the properly underrated Witch Creek Donation Jug Band playing on a flatbed on the sand)

70201

As for Warhol, yeah the soup can thing sucked as he partied his way to the bank. My mid-sixties " Electric Salvation Jug Band Army" auditioned for him to play at his club, the" Exploding Plastic Inevitble". Our sound was even too wierd for him, but he took a movie of us playing to project on the walls of the club.

Then there was the time at the Cafe Wha? in Grenwich Village (early sixties) when after hanging out with the Chambers Brothers at their hotel (my friend Richie's sister was dating Willie) , we went down to the Wha ? where Willie stepped up to the mike, said : " There were times when we were so poor that sitting around the dinner table our Mother sadly said there's no food tonight...." So we would Sing - and opened with a version of "People Get Ready" that f'ing wrenched every gut in the place.

Next on the bill was the Paul Butterfield Blues Band - Paul, Michael Bloomfield, Elvin Bishop, and Sam Lay. Blew the doors off, even impressing a certain Mr. Zimmerman who sat down next to me (I quit trembling after a while).

MUSIC, the Sixties, :Peace_Sign::Peace_Sign:

Tony, you are correct the sixties were where some of the best modern music was formed.....Lady Honk and the wee twit from Canada....I think his first name is Justin should listen to some of the great bands of that time, and not the American Idol idiots and other single singers that are the modern idiom of crappy music that they can download for free.

I'm really enjoying this thread (in the midst of setting up seven boats for WWVIII coming up in two weeks :scared:) It's so nice to connect with those who have love of music in their hearts.

I'm with Douggie in that there's so much garbage on the airwaves. And then there's music that makes you smile, set yer toes a-tappin', and some that display a deep respect for the craft by serious songwriters, players and arrangers.

Not to get too "political" (which I'll do if needed), here's a song collaborated on by two respected songwriters, Radney Foster and Darden Smith which I've previously posted some time ago that displays the enormous serious emotional impact that music can elicit. Perfectly crafted, beautifully delivered with accompanying video. Let it play through ( it's long, just hang with it) and take a moment.....

OK, it's time for me disclose, at great risk to all within earshhot ( this thread IS called The Death of Music, right?) the one and only song I ever wrote that actually made it to CD. Seems that during the O.J trial, the sicka$$ "Dream Team" , Cochran & Shapiro were dreaming up all kinds of "alternative culprits" to get O.J. off. Colombian Drug Lords, Aliens from outer space and such. I cracked up so much at these idiotic theories that I came up with one of my own which made just as much sense. I wrote "The Ballad of O.J. - Elvis Made Me Do It " and put it away for about a year until one day I was going for a putt with my good buddy Johnny Ransom (his real name) who was the lead singer in a hardcore punk band called the Smut Peddlers. I gave him the song, the Smut Peddlers recorded (and performed) it and to this day it remains in their catalogue. WARNING - It's hardcore PUNK, but check it out :

I normally get my butt kicked there, but three days of all-FE racing is something I wouldn't miss for the world. OK, this is a bit of a stretch, even for folkies, but before the "protest" movement got into full swing, there was Jug Band music. Fritz Richmond, Kweskin's washtub player (on the jug in this tune) inspired my rise (and subsequent alcohol fueled fall) as a washtub-base player leading to two second runners-up in two consecutive World Washtub competitions in Rancho Bernardo CA in the late sixties. And Maria Muldaur, possibly the sexiest woman to ever grace a coffehouse stage - I mean Holy *^#

Years ago, while touring the south of Spain, the Mz. and I managed to get a room within the walls of the Alhambra. Not sure exactly when the Paradore,(hotel), was built, but king Ferdinand and queen Isabella were once buried in the lobby floor.
In the evening, when all the other tourists are locked out of the fortress walls, we were able to walk about freely. While there, we discovered that there was a centuries old Celtic connection to the area, and were presented with this fact in a very
entertaining manner. Here's a pic of Mz. Runz standing in a courtyard built in 1527. As you can see, it is not very large, for what took place there. Amazing what a little mood lighting will do. (Douggie, I hope you will like the artist)70422
