A little prop de-lifting

Also, notice that my FE30 builds that use T-180's incorporate the right-angle banjo water fittings to allow a 2P battery configuration beside the SC, but also have the motor and SC spaced so that a 1P setup can allow a single battery to fit properly in front as well.

Allen already had the motor mount fiberglassed in, so I built battery boxes around them and integrated the T-180 mount on them. This'll make a nice P-Mono raceboat.

properchopper

Frank bought this boat partially completed from an OSE member; the stinger was installed offset to the right - had to move it to to the centerline so the shaft would line up with the rail motor-mount(s). To keep the CG as far back as possible on anything from 4S to 6S I fabbed a vertical mount for the T-180 (a first for me :confused2:) but it worked out really nice !
Non-adhesive velcro firmly attached under the box should keep the batt's well in place.

Got the stinger installed & the rudder backing plate roughed out ( to mount rudder high enough to clear the tabs, the top mounting holes come through above the boat's transom backing plate, so I make a reinforcing piece for extra strength - details, details!). Will shorten stinger, mount the rest of the transom hardware, and start the rails today. :thumbup1:

Stinger shortened, hardware mounted with all holes sealed, note reinforced upper rudder bolt internal transom backing plate just for added strength since the upper bolts miss the existing transom backing plate. Wil start on rails after my midday nap

Todd wisely chose to go with the Castle/Neu 1515 1Y - T-180 combo. The T-180 was narrowed with 90 degree banjoes to allow for 2P power. High torque EXI D226F servo and the FlySky GT3b radio. Todd has some cool graphics/wraps planned and this boat will really stand out !!

Stephen wanted a dedicated P-Ltd rig, so off we went. Blueprinting the motor wires revealed melted insulation inside the endbell which was sure to cause a big problem (see : "Blueprinting UL-1 motor wires" in the "TIPS" forum.)

Servo rod pass-through is aluminum tube with short bellows. Motor and Turnigy T-120 with an extra cap provide the spec motivation. Velcro will be added for a 1P 4S battery.

Robert wanted to start out with spec power with the option to go P-Sport later. I totally agree - start out learning the ways of Sport Hydro's and power up later.

Setting the strut height with nifty guage, tube for servo-rod pass through ( gives clearance for rod to articulate without binding) and makes for easy to attach bellows. Nylon shear bolt add-on is a must.

Steven, I'm really excited to see how they work out. Definitely not for everyone, won't appeal to the go-fasters, but for those that like scale looks, and want some fun, these should be the ticket. Personally, I'm looking forward to having a race class that isn't at warp speed. [ There should be three boats at WWVIII and wer'e hoping to run some heats] .The built in handling "challanges" should make for an interesting driving experience {and I mean that in a good way}. I believe there's real potential here for the growth of this category, and the thread on RRR shows some developing interest from that quarter. The quality is excellent, btw, and they should be easy to rig and a nice creative outlet for paint/graphics. Incidently, I just caught your announcement of the center-mount SPD rudders and they look really perfect for this application, although they'd be side-mounted.

Thanks Joel. The FE30 derives its pedigree from the world-class line of big gas racers at Insane Boats - Jeff is a perfectionist and the lessons learned from his big boats filters down to the FE models. Dave wants to race P-Ltd. with the option of changing motors to go P-Sport. Narrowed the T-180 to allow 4S2P batteries to fit beside the ESC. A .150 cable with teflon is installed with the option of pulling out the teflon and putting in a .187 cable I supplied trimmed to fit to "convert" to the P-Sport configuration with a bigger motor..

Tristan wisely chose the TP Power 3Y 2220KV motor / Swordy Pro 220A+ combo. This should be a ballistic missle !

Laser employed to find/align stuffing tube slot to the strut. Perfect alignment to the motor collet means less vibration/noise/parasitic driveline drag

Steve,

Thanks for posting the vid - It's definitely rewarding for me to see one of my builds run so nicely - Your MM is WAAY fast & corners on RAILS - I really hadn't expected it to be that fast  To unload the powerplant with that prop you can raise the strut vertically a bit ; 1/8" to even 1/4" BUT probably easier to prop down & test.

Ray : TP 4060 5D 2040KV (OSE Special wind). This motor in P-Mono heat racing trim can spin anything from a 447/2 all the way up to a 450/3 or even a 452/2. I advised my customer to go with the really nice OSE CNC 448/3 and that prop should ROCK on the oval with this build.

Years ago Randy convinced me of the benefits of rear motor placement. I mock up EVERYTHING with the rear hdwr installed & mark the motor position as far rear as practical giving access to the collet with room for the batteries to be slid fore/aft to adjust CG for different race conditions, then bond everything in place. I shipped the boat this morning & can't give a measurement - maybe this picture helps

Shawn, Thanks & good call on the corner tracking! I use the longish SPD 40/60 rudder trimmed down + the El Giganto XXL turn fins . Racing experience teaches that cornering hard & fast in bouncy racewater requires keeping the metal well submerged in the water while navigating the slopchop rounding the buoys - (not that critical for the zoom-zoom rigs)

Ray,

Here's my take, based not so much on empirical data but "seat of the pants" racing experience :

Several years ago the "go-to" P-Mono motor was the 1515 1Y 2200KV motor. Still very viable in most P-Mono hulls & especially quick in the light & agile Cyberstorm/Pursuit. Then the "bigger must be better" movement took hold & many went to 1521 1.5D 1890KV - like a good sheep I did (see vid) and could swing a bigger wheel, especially a 3-blade which accelerates like mad out of the turns. Tyler& Mark went with the 2300KV 1527 and could rocket past the pack until terminal racewater speed-wobbles did unkind things to their finishing potential. Any of these (1515 1Y, 1521 1.5D, TP Power 4060 5D, 1527 2300KV) will get you into turn one. Anything can (and will) happen after that

Ray, you know that I entered P-Mono at the last race. No one (besides you ?) did. I was just as disappointed.

Agree on motors. I run in my IB34 the 1521 1.5D. Mark's (almost identical IB34 runs the 1527 2300. Pretty sure Tyler's Cyber did too.) Here I outpulled Mark coming out of the turns (using the whopping 450/3) , even let Mark pass after he got a 1-Lap for smacking the buoy and Tyler's Cyber bellied up in the slop.
