Changing the motor on my Whip sport 20 from a Medusa 3670 -2300kv to a Leopard 4074 -2200kv. I'm currently running a CC Barracuda 125. My question is, will the CC125 be enough controller for this motor in a sport setup (4S1P & probably around an M445 prop) or will it most likely turn to charcoal ? Extremely limited on space inside this hull. I have a Seaking 180, but it will never fit in this boat. Anyone have any ideas on what this setup draws (Eagle tree, etc.) ?
Any input would be appreciated.

Thanks

Tough call. I don't have that exact motor and hull, but I suspect that you'll be running close to the 125 rating of the ESC. I pull 80-90 amps in an FE-30 with a UL-1 motor, the Leopard will pull a lot more than that if propped too much. I think I'd plan on using a smaller prop first, like an x442 or Grim 42x66. You should see close to 60 with those motor/prop combos.

I might add that Steven(OSE) sells a 200amp swordfish esc that is about 90 something dollars that will give you the additional headroom you need and would probably fit better.

I originally used a T120 speedo in my pursuit with the Leopard 2200 on 4s with an x442 and it help up fine. Went to a T180 just for some more headroom and the fact that i needed the t120 for another boat.

I'm running an un-cooled Barra 125 in my Whiplash with a Neu 1515/1Y and an ABC 1614/3 Chopper prop. The Barra handles it with ease, and I wouldn't hesitate to throw an M445 on there (but I prefer the ABC for handling). I also run a fan-cooled Barra 125 in my DF33 with a Neu 1518/1.5D and an M445. The Barra again does well and is only warm after a race. But note - these are only run for 7-8 laps tops as they are race setups. I wouldn't try running them for more than several minutes as the ESC heat may build. Also, mine are the later Barra 125s, check to see if yours is a later one or an earlier one (smaller FETS).

I would recommend fan cooling your Barra and starting with an X442 (as Jay suggested). And work your way up from there. If it's a light-ish Whip, you'll be fine (mine is 6 pounds RTR).

Thanks for the replies guys. My cuda is one of the early ones with the small fets. I built my hull heavy, never intending to race it. It's close to 7lbs rtr. In addition, every combination I've tried to date has run on the warm side (Hacker 8XL, Feigao 8Xl & the Medusa). Seems to me the boat is running wet, but I'm no expert by any means. Sounds like things are stacking up against me here, but I will try it with a small prop and see what happens.
How are you guys fan cooling your cudas? Do you direct the fan on the top, cap end ? Shrink or no shrink ?
I was already considering the Swordfish 200, but haven't heard much about how they're working out.

Again, any info would be appreciated.

Thanks

Do a search (top right corner) on the swordfish 200 and you will find some good write ups on it.

I totally forgot to mention that I have a brand new Phoenix Ice 100 & Pistix that would also fit in this hull. The only reason I'm mentioning this is because I had heard rumors (don't know if true) that some guys are pulling way over 100 amps continuous on this controller with no problems using just a fan (I think Steve uses them). Does anyone out there think this would be a better choice for this setup over the Cuda ?

Thanks

Hey Hammer just put one or the other in it and give it a shot. Don't forget our rescue tug at the pond has a working fire monitor on it....... just in case. LOL
